🇻🇳 PHO - NOMENAL 60 Year Old Beef Brisket Pho + Michelin Bun Cha in Hanoi Old Quarter
Today was my third day in Hanoi, Vietnam and I definitely made up for lost time! I headed out for the ultimate Pho Bo (beef pho with brisket) in Hanoi old quarter and I have to say, for what it's worth, this was top 5 pho I've had anywhere.
I headed to a 60 year plus old Pho shop called Phở Gia Truyền Bát Đàn in Hanoi Old Quarter and tried the mixed beef pho. It was incredible!
Next up I tried to go to a hidden bun cha spot but it was closed so I ended up at the Michelin recommended Bun Cha Dac Kim. It's super famous and was ok, but maybe I'm just not that keen on bun cha!
To get to Phở Gia Truyền Bát Đàn, follow the Google Maps link below:

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZread channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

You know it!
pickled garlic vinegar is common in the North, especially when you're eating beef pho. Limes are generally used for Pho Ga, but you will often get both options at most shops. There's no side bowls because we Northerners don't dip like they do in the South. I've eaten at this place when I visited and it is by far the best pho and I've eaten at probably 150 different pho restaurants from around the world. The original location of Phoholic in Orange County, California comes in 2nd but still a distant second.

Thanks so much for the info, I’m learning all the time! Now I want to go to Orange Country haha
On a cold day like that, you need a bowl of chao/congee. Hunt down chao long (which often has the blood sausage and organ meats). It's the only blood product I'd eat and I love it. Although in Hanoi, they also make the smooth congee where the rice is blended to make a thick batter of sorts. Order extra fried breadsticks to dip in your congee or toss on top of it.

Yeah Chao Long would have been the one!
I think we had identical Hanoi trips! Cold, rainy, grey.. but it makes hot soups taste all the better. Love the Vietnam content! Very welcome after I have exhausted your Thailand content😆

Went to both these spots in Hanoi when I was there in November! That Pho place is definitely one of the best I've ever had in Vietnam. I agree with you about Bun Cha, I really want to like it but I just find it ok, so many better Vietnamese doshes out there.

I feel like there’s something wrong with me because I don’t love it like everyone else haha
For the name of herbs, I don't know all of their english name so you can search by Vietnamese name by this list and recognize them by their shape: Rau mùi/ngò, rau tía tô, rau bạc hà, rau húng chanh, rau húng quế, rau răm, rau thì là, rau ngò gai, rau kinh giới, rau diếp cá, sả, cần tây .... still many left :D
Proper smelly England weather in Hanoi this time of year! Last time we were there I think it drizzled for 98% of the trip. Food looks flippin quality.
You're so ins-PHO-rational my brother.. i seriously cant wait to come back to Vietnam again..
Loved this Gary. That boiling Vat of beef broth ❤ and the spring rolls had my mouth watering. Cheers.
Another awesome video. Sorry that Bun Cha place at 74 Hang Quat wasn’t open when you went there. Thanks for the lead on the hotel 🙂

Thanks mate. I’ll just have to go back 😀 the hotel isn’t anything special, they are just ridiculously friendly and it’s clean and comfortable 👍
Thanks, Gary. I still prefer Thai tastes, but I could eat like this for a good long time. I definitely would rather spend time and eat in the Old Town there, probably because I realize that it won't be there forever. It reminds me of where I grew up in NYC, and I love the action, the activity, the juice that you don't find in the plastic and glass malls which are springing up everywhere. My stomach might disagree, but I can deal with that.
This Pho look amazing! Especially have that during winter is absolute delight. I've just put this in my to go list. Thx Gary. 😋

I love Pho Ga(chicken) in the Northern because Its clear and light, mild sweet. And Pho Bo in the Southern because its rich, a lot of vegetables(herbs), meats. Bun Cha is my most favorite dish in Ha Noi and Bun Thit Nuong in Sai Gon!

Great Video Gary, when are you back in Paradise, I mean Bangkok?
I live in Saigon and was team Southern pho until having pho in Hanoi. The spicy sour chili sauce is the game changer, much better than Saigon sweet chili sauce. Bun cha dac kim is the best bun cha I have had. 100x better than the Obama one. Can’t find any place in Saigon that can compare :(
@theroamingcook

Yeah I’m with you on the pho! I think if I could combine the two and have the broth and sauce from the north but with the herbs and sprouts from the south I’d be a happy man!

No way 😂 No true Hanoians ever visit Bun Cha Dac Kim (which is seen for us as a complete tourist trap) . They even dont use good quality meat and the right meat parts for it. Ha Noi has way many better spots for good quality authentic bun cha man.
@theroamingcook

@nqanqanqa totally agree, the one I tried to go to was closed. I think the nickname is hidden bun cha? I’ve been. To more local places and preferred them, it’s just not my favourite dish there. I like it I just don’t love it! 🙏
@nqanqanqa

@@theroamingcook yeah, Hidden bun cha is the english name for Bun Cha Hang Quat. It is much better than Bun cha Dac Kim. I agree that some local smaller shops might be better in the bun cha case as they have more time to focus on the ingredients, cooking process etc and dont have to make bulk imports (busy shops supplies might be worse in bun cha case as it requires specific parts of the meat, so busy shops will more likely try to save on that). Shops like Bun Cha Dac Kim know they have mostly foreigners eating there who probably never had bun cha before or don't know what a good bun cha is are just taking advantge of the family legacy, which is quite sad tbh.
I was there two weeks ago and it was cold, back to BKK for some warmth✌

Lime is for Chicken Pho, vinegar is for Beef Pho, that is why you did not see limes in that Beef Pho Restaurant. You put too much chilly in your bowl:)

the michelin guide needs to stay in europe and north america because it does not know anything about asian food. that bun cha spot is literally the worst spot in ha noi for bun cha, like Gary said, the food there is always cold because they dont serve it to you fresh off the grill!!!
that bon cha place was so insanely good. i visited hanoi for a week, and ate at that place 3 times. with that said, it was also one of the dirtiest restaurants i ever visted, lmao.
