Philosophy of Plato (Part 1: Idealism)
Platonic philosophy of "Idealism" for Humanities class (Dr. George Brooks)
Note: Several viewers have brought to my attention the audio problem of this only coming out of one speaker--my apologies, these videos were made by digital media students at the college and are of uneven quality. It is better to watch this with your internal computer speakers rather than under headphones or any stereo set-up. I will try to get this fixed when the pandemic is over and I can return to campus.

I've been listening to all "expert" instructors on youtube from Yale to whatever yet this instructor takes the effort to make Platonism comprehensive in terms of the STUDENT and speaks to the student-not at them. Thanks for the effort. I am so happy i finally get it.

_the only one who has the capacity to teach one platonism is one who is a platonist. there is more than meets the eye. that's the whole point_ _for one, platonism is about asking questions and awakening a desire in the one so hearing (if you understand) to resolve the matter_ _plato would recoil in sheer terror at seeing with his eyes how far his teachings have fallen, at the totally corrupt state of "universities at present" -- the modern sophists who borrow his good name at interest. stranger, give it back_

A lot of online videos have teachers that talk a mile a minute or get off on tangents and you end up not learning a damn thing.

31 seconds were meant for thinking about the title and for questioning as to why the hell the intro is taking so long Philosophy is confusing like that lol.

'evil is just lack of or ignorance of good' - that's an interesting take by plato
Just wanna say thank you Mr. Brooks for making these complex ideas available, and in a plain-spoken way, to those of us who might not ever see the inside of a college classroom. This is important stuff. You are doing good things for the progress of humanity.

Thank you for sharing. I threw away the first 27 years of my life. I remember the day I finally broke... it was a private moment. But I’m here now and trying to learn. If you and others like you didn’t share this knowledge and let me benefit from a man who has his house in order... I just don’t want to know where I’d be.
This class is beautiful. Philosophy really is the way for human growth

Hey George, I'm starting your videos today and I've gotta say I'm really enjoying it so far. Thanks for uploading these! Side note I believe this is what the internet's best self is. Sharing pure knowledge with no ulterior motive, just to inform the masses.
Good teacher. Like his love for this country
I absolutely LOVE and appreciate these lectures. Its so enriching in the best way and made me realize I’ve been a platonic thinker my whole life. Thank you 🙏🏻🤍
*Serious round of applause* Thank you very much. You are a great teacher.
Excellent lecture. Excellent explanation of how possibly Plato himself has had reached the idea of ideal form. Thanks Dr. Brooks.
Regardless if you are a high-school teacher or a college professor you are an exceptional educator sir.
This is the best lecture on Plato I have heard by far. Plato was my favorite Greek philosopher and one of all time favourites. But over the years I heard some shoddy commemtary on him, and I started liking Aristotle more. This lecture overturns that.
“You are here, therefore my thirst for philosophy exists, and I exist profoundly”- thank you teacher...

Thank you for sharing part of your lecture with us Dr. Brooks.
Very, very helpful. I wish I had listened to this lecture years ago. Thank you Professor Brooks!
This is so brilliant! These kids are so fortunate to have this instructor! I am very thankful I came across this!
Starting college again after a many year break. Stumbled upon this video! Very well explained and super helpful to me. Thanks george!
Thank you, Professor Brooks, for making Plato comprehensible. I can now see why he was so influential. Thank you!
Great lecture! Thorough, yet precise. Thanks for sharing on KZread...We are all so lucky to have this opportunity.
A very concise definition of participation and idealism. Thank you, I watched this months ago and have since read Republic and many other dialogues.
Damn. It's 2022 now, and I fancy myself to have an understanding of this already... I still found this extremely valuable with respect to my own thinking. Thank you Dr. Brooks.
Thank you for making this public. I enjoyed spending my Friday evening listening to your lecture. I found your lecture because I was looking for an audio version of Plato's Cave. I was hoping to grasp a deeper insight into the concept of Christian "repentance" as equal to the concept of the form of "change." Your lecture nailed it! Thank you!!!
Finally! A cogent explanation by an excellent teacher.
Absolutely fantastic lecture on plato and his philosophy. It has cleared up a lot of confusion and connected a lot of dots for me! Thanks.
When i was a kid i hated school, teaching .... anything related to it realy. Now at the age of 32 I am appriciating it. Thank you whoever you are. You are an amazing teacher, transferring this amazing knowledge to poeple like me. Thank you Thank you and thank YOU
Fantastic lecture. I am fascinated by this. It seems similar to knowing Natural Law. The founders were very educated and practiced the 7 liberal arts and sciences.
I would like to Thank Dr. George Brooks for the phenomenal Lecture as it truly shows his understanding of philosophy Bravo
You are a great lecturer. You spin a very engaging and interesting narrative. Love it! After reading the apology and the republic it's nice to hear more context and history.
Brilliant! Great delivery and a fascinating subject matter. Thank You for broadening my mind :)

I am taking, intro to philosophy next week and I wanted to prep. Now I feel equipped with enough of the basics. Thank youuuuuuu!
I like the inspiring teaching step by step along with whiteboard presentation.
This is really a great lecture.. Many thanks to you Mr Brooks , you’re truly a wonderfully insightful professor.. As a Muslin who knows the basics about his religion’s entireties I can assure you that all those questions raised by PLATO are answered in the QURAN and in prophet teachings especially the super form (GOOD) which is basically GOD or ALLAH.. They’re in fact answered- to a degree- in the the BIBLE and TORAH as well.. All in all PLATO’s philosophy is a guiding enlightenment in life.. God bless
Beautiful lecture. It opens my mind.
This lecture reignited my passion for philosophy 3 years ago and in the rare occasion I have meaningful dialogue with someone and share this passion, I use lessons from this lecture to introduce said person to the wonders of philosophy. I use a circle though, we know what a circle is, we can conceptualize a perfect circle but we are not capable of making a perfect circle. I may draw a circle on paper and while its tangible, physical and present, it is only a poor reflection of its ideal form... a non physical idea pulled from the ether., the logos. It was this very lecture, this very idea that shattered my perception of reality and truly changed me, I equate it to something like ego death and I have been devouring philosophical ideas ever since. I liked philosophy growing up and I was having deep philosophical thoughts at an early age but somewhere in my late teens I became a product of my environment, a shadow of my true self with a perpetual mask to conform, blend in and be accepted. Luckily I broke free or at least learned to remove the mask, and this lecture was a honestly a big part of it, maybe even the catalyst so thank you very much, truly. I'll leave you with the next two questions I pondered and still ponder.... is the good a reflection of God's ideals, or does God hold these ideals because they are good(Plato/Socrates). 7.) Is man just a blunder of God, or is God just a blunder of Man.( Nietzsche)

Soon as he said the white board and the door my brain stuck with patterns. The thought of patters, sticking out or maybe being picked out. Is a subject of its own.
Underrated channel...worth a million subscribers..!!
I never knew anything about philosophy but have recently discovered it and read Plato's The Republic and found it fascinating. I think some people are just geared to this way of thinking. I would be the one to notice someone was physically attractive and then occasionally think..... How do I know they are attractive? What is it that makes them attractive and someone else not attractive? I thought I was just weird.... until I discovered philosophy. Maybe still weird.... but at least now I know I'm not the only one 😂😂. Awesome video, I will be watching the rest of your series on Plato.
A great lecture delivered by a great teacher.
Thanks for your valuable lecture. yours is the best on plato available on the youtube. Highly recommended. Best Regards, Shekhar Sinha, India
