Philosophy for children is not an oxymoron | Lynne Hinton | TEDxHillbrookAnglicanSchool

Lynne believes that the core business of schools is to teach children and adolescents to think well about every aspect of their lives, and that this can be achieved through engagement in collaborative philosophical inquiry. This has been the focus of her work as a School Principal, an Adjunct Professor at QUT, and at Hillbrook School, where she has been since 2014. I was 16, and complaining to my mentor, a 74 year old humanist, socialist, that my economics teacher was anti-capitalist, irrational, and kept dodging questions that exposed his contradictions. Harry Hiddleson, a retired farmer who ran a small nursery by himself, replied, "School shouldn't teach what to think or study. It should only teach how to think. When that is learned, the student is then ready to choose his subjects and determine what to think." Now, at 80, I can be a mentor, and teach philosophy to children, e.g., "What is? How do I know it? So what? How do I apply my ethics to society? What is the value of art?"
