Philodendron Pink Princess - Getting back variegation via propagation

In this video I show you the best way to get back pink variegation since these little buggers love to revert to all green leaves. (Spoiler: propagation is the way to increase chances of variegation).
I experienced a huge setback/failure during propagation and lost most of the cuttings from overwatering (I blame the rainy season but I should have known better to keep them indoors. But the good news is, I managed to get some variegation! Yaye!
I will continue propagating this plant until I find the one that will give me the most pink! As should you if you are experiencing the same problem of reverted pink princess!

    One local florist I'm familiar with has an older pink princess, not for sale. Has very colourful leaves, greens are actually the minority on her. Been that way for years now. The plant is not well-sunlit at all, but is surrounded by a lot of artificial lights. Not even grow lights, just a banal selection of phosphorescent tubes. Perhaps that's the thing that helps them grow pinks? Unnatural environment. Maybe?

    "Staring a little too long at a bleeding plant...awkward"...HA HA HA! Your too cute!!! And I do agree with the randomness of the Pink Princesses and the their ease of reverting is the downside of owning one. I had one with phenomenal variegation and I sold it thinking I could get another one...and now with the size and variegation of the one I sold it would be cost at least $1000 for one like it. Looks like I won't be get another one like the one I had. I kick myself up to this day for selling it! Great results...and sorry to hear about your losses it is the unfortunate facts of plant life. I just did a major hack job on 2 of my huge reverted pink princesses in hopes of getting some variegated babies. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping you are well and wishing you the best! HAPPY GROWING!

But you just convinced me not too... since what everyone says is that variegation is so unstable. I can't afford a pink princess but one of my philodendron brazil, started to revert to all green....so I cut off the stem and have propagated it. If you look closely at other stems, you can see both yellow and green...this is a good indicator of how much variegation a plant has and the leaves carry some of this as they uncurl. So if I did buy a pink princess, I'd check the stems closely. ( Although I've never seen one up close).

  • @onlyplants

    @onlyplants

    3 жыл бұрын

    The stem on the pink princess is mostly maroon on mine , maybe this is a sign of faded variegation. But ive seen people post pink princesses with 10+ green leaves and finally a variegated one... this shows how random the variegations are. Brazils respond well to light and will give insane variegation with direct sunlight.

    I’m new to plants so forgive me. What’s the difference between this plant and about 4 other Philodendron I have seen that looks just like it but for color??? I don’t get the price and we see here it acts like any other plant. Thanks for the video 🤗

    My mother plant also got a nice pink leaf after I cut it down . So far every cutting I have made has survived on my PPP but I try to have at least 2 or 3 nodes , the one leaf cuttings are too risky.

    Ooo interesting tip. Also I feel like they do better in water propagation. Will try that next.

    Oh yay, the t- shirt is back with a short video... what?!!!! under 20/15mins... 11mins!!!! ;) wahahahahaa dont worry - I think this will make you GAIN more views as it is OKAY to fail. for the best of us - we live n learn. in this crazy 'winter' asia weather - i fear for my indoors plants too. they NEED light and I am worried as they all seems a bit more droopy as well! Yes, water propagation totally 100% safe bet! I got cocky too, sharing my scindapsus silver ann with friends ... now, my mother plant had root rot :( :( :( luckily I get some on water propagation which means I still have some cutting from mother plant! phew! we are all humans! * Loving those face terracotta planters behind! love them!!!!

    Hi thank you for the video, do you have the title of the video where you wrap the moss? My plant has a lot of leaves and is dropping a lot because of the weight. It would be great to know what type of moss you buy and how to wrap it. Also would you advise supporting this plant on a stick?

    99% philodendrons require a pole to climb on. For that air layering video so check out the melanochrysum one 😀

    I just chopped up my PPP to get more pink. Then she shot out a beautiful burgundy leaf that I am obsessed with. If she keeps giving me dark leaves I won't mind not getting any pink.

    Great experiment and thank you for showcasing your efforts. Like you, I do not recommend these plants to people. I feel they are over rated and over priced for what they are. I had one, propped it twice, and tossed them all away. Not even worth reselling, imo!

  • @CraigSakada

    They naturally want to revert! I figured this out with 4 of my 3.5-4 ft ppp’s. I had to completely chop them. Brought the pink back. The burgundy leaves are nice though. Maybe the cutting will grow pink after all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Once they revert its really hard to get back variegation 🥲

    @@onlyplants ugh I know! I was really digging the big leaves but I had to chop all the way down to the last variegated leaf which was the bottom for one of them. 🥹

    Hi sean have you tried a slow release fertilizer called dynamite? A friend recommends that type of fertilizer to me and i tried it on my reverting variegated plants and somehow all of the plants get its variegation back and they grow super fast too i'm super happy now

  • @onlyplants

    Hello I’ve not tried that but I have a feeling variegation is a combination of luck, genetics, and light levels. 😌

    Hi Sean, some people said if variegated plants "too happy" (such as fertilized regularly, etc), the plants will lose its variegation. So you have to make your plants a bit "suffer" to maintain the variegation. Based on your experience, what do you think bout that theory? Is it true?

  • @onlyplants

    @onlyplants

    3 жыл бұрын

    That doesnt seem to be true. For most species more light = more variegation and less light = reversion. The easiest way to see these is in epipremum or pothos.

    I heard tht there are people in Indonesia actually did ‘lab made variegation’ plants. Well of coz this kind of method wont last long and will went off over time. To avoid been con, some expert say you may examine the stem of the plant to tell weather it is a real variegated plants or not.

  • @onlyplants

    @onlyplants

    You can tell if its fake/chemically induced because the variegation will be way too bright in color and usually it cover the whole leaf.
