Phillips 3200 Series LatteGo - Grinder Chute

Questions about how many times you need to grind to clear a previous grind size or bean change prompted this video. This shows the grinder location relative to the chute that drops grounds into the brewing assembly. A Phillips Service technician told me it can take a couple of grinds to clear the contents of this chute.

    I'm an independent service technician for coffee machines in the Netherlands for several brands. Most brands like this Philips have way less than 1 grind cycle retention. Probably about half a grind cycle. I haven't measured the amount in grams but it's certainly not several grind cycles. I might measure it precisely in the future but these grinders don't need a lot of servicing so that'll take a while.

    That would be super helpful to know for sure. I was trying to do it myself with some light and dark grounds to see if there is a difference, but I couldn't tell for sure when one was fully changed into the other. What would be nice is a teardown of a machine like this that measured the 'volume' and 'density' that the chute can hold, we could then take the weight of a grind and calculate how many of that amount of mass would be required to pass a full chute.

    Hey Bryan, just got my 3200 and the espresso and coffee is really weak and the pucks watery. I know the machine takes a while to settle in, but how long should I wait before thinking it's a problem? I use the finest grind setting, the highest aroma setting and the middle water volume setting.

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    3 жыл бұрын

    I find that a more 'medium' grind works better in this machine. I know that a 'fine' grind should expose more surface area to the water and increase the 'strength' of the coffee, but I haven't had that experience. I don't know how the grinder knows how long to grind for based on aroma and grind settings. Also, for me, the beans I use have the most significant difference in the perceived strength of the coffee. I tend to go with medium-roast espresso beans that do not have a lot of surface oils on them.

    Hi Bryan! How do you find the beverages this makes? I've heard some people say it's a bit watery compared to other machines? I've also heard about mold issues inside? I'm considering this vs the Brera or the Lirika Plus and am having a heck of a time making a decision. Thanks

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    3 жыл бұрын

    I can't speak for the other machines, but we've used this one to make at least two drinks almost everyday for more than a year now. Rough estimate is a bit over 1000 beverages. I feel like it was a great purchase. I think settings such as volume of water, grind and the bean selection can have a significant impact on the output of the machine. I can say I've found beans and settings that deliver beverages that I enjoy. Espresso shots are rich and flavorful, and it's hard to tell with anything else if it is too watery, because other components are added (water and/or milk). If I neglect to keep the interior clean on a regular basis, then I have seen a bit of mold forming in the warm, moist residue of the grounds. But that is more about how well I maintain the unit than the machine itself. I also live in the Pacific Northwest USA, where environmental molds are more prevalent.

  • @BryanKlein

    I looked at the other machines, and I would say that the convenience and the quality of the LatteGo milk system would put it over the top compared to the others. If you only make Espresso, Lungo, and Americano styles then it matters less, but for Macchiato and Cappuccino style, you will be glad to have the LatteGo.

    I just got my 3200 and love it so far. I have never used beans or a grinder. My question is about the grinder. When I look at the top of the grinder knob the 1 is at the top and of coarse the 12 is at the bottom. Where is the notch to show where you stop the knob on the setting I would want? I haven’t touched it yet since I have started using it ...but I honestly don’t know if I’m drinking a 1 or a 12 since I’m not sure where the point is that you stop for your desired strength.
