    Thanks for the review and making coffee great again. I like strong americanos and some of the other reviews shows what looks like a diluted americano/coffee. What has your experience been and do you have any tips to get a good and strong americano?

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry, I just saw your comment. I also like strong coffee, but people seem to have different ideas of what 'strong' means. Some think 'strong' is the flavor of over-roasted (burned) dark roast beans. Some think of "strong" as a good buzz from beans with higher caffeine content (typically from more of a medium roast). So it probably depends on what strong means to you. As for brewing an 'Americano' with more 'flavor' into the cup, you could set the 'bean' setting on max (which adds more grinds to the puck). Then set the water volume setting to a lower set point. This should flow less water through more beans during the extraction process before adding hot water at the end. I would also probably set the grind settings to a more 'fine' setting to increase the surface area that the water can come into contact with (not all the way to #1 on the dial, just more toward that end than the other). For maximum control over the final product, I would probably just extract a couple of 'Espresso' brews to get 'shots' in the cup, then use the hot water option to add in water to your preference.

    Nice review. How can I get hot milk from the machine. Also, can I prepare different coffees? ( Like flat white etc.)

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind comment. If all you want is hot milk, you can use the Latte Macchiato button to steam the milk. The trick is to press the 'bean' button so that the scoop of grounds is selected, this will keep the machine from grinding beans. Then after the milk steaming phase, just press the run/stop button to skip the coffee extraction step and you will have a cup of steamed milk. For a flat white, unfortunately this machine isn't a human barista, (it would be sorta weird to keep on of them in my kitchen) 😆 and there are some limitations to the mechanical steaming/foaming process. I personally enjoy a flat white too, and when I was in New Zealand in March I asked a real-life Barista there what exactly is a flat white. He told me that the classic flat white is a Latte that uses a higher coffee to milk ratio and has less foam with only a thin (up to 20 mm) layer of microfoam at the top (this is the flat part, basically very little foam). That if you let the drink sit for a moment after the espresso is added that the crema from the coffee and the foam from the milk merge together a bit more to make a very velvety layer to enjoy a sample from with each sip. So, how can we get close with this machine? What I do is set the bean to the high point. The water volume and the milk to the lowest levels. This will result in a higher 'strength' espresso shot with less milk volume in the cup (typical ratio in a flat white). Then choose the Latte Macchiato setting and let it go. When it is done, I use a spoon to remove most of the foam at the top (the largest bubbles) to leave a thin layer of microfoam at the surface. In the end I have a more coffee forward latte with a very thin layer of microfoam at the top. I let it sit for a minute after removing the top foam, then use a stir rod or spoon to reach down through the top foam and gently mix the milk and espresso together. Ok, that's about it. If you try one for yourself, please let me know how it goes, or if you would change anything. I've gotta go make myself one now. 😁

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Michael! I am not sure what your grinder setting is set to, but I have found that if I go too fine, then I don't get enough 'volume' of grounds into the brew group basket and it ends up making a more 'soupy' mix without a nicely pressed puck. So, you might try moving the grind setting knob to a more coarse position, I have mine set somewhere between 6 and 9. It could also be that the grinder is a bit clogged up, especially if the beans you have been running through it are too oily. I am not sure the best way to clean the grinder out, I have never done it and the only video I have found related to that is a fairly comprehensive disassembly of the whole unit, so I would leave that as a last resort and try seeing if just changing the grind setting does the trick. Also, it might take a couple of grinds for the changes to reflect in the consistency of the puck. Finally, I really liked this video to show a deep cleaning of the brew unit. kzread.info/dash/bejne/enuhyNCAfsKwgaQ.html one note is that I did not have a glass bead/ball at the end of the screen, mine was more of a little cylindrical stopper at the end of the spring. The taper of the spring does matter, so keep an eye on that part and put it back the same way. I also didn't use anything special for the cleaner. I just used dawn dish soap to degrease and clean all the little bits with a small brush.

    I usually aim for a medium roast espresso bean. But I haven't run a medium roast through this machine that I haven't liked yet. Oily beans are ok, but usually it's a sign of over roasting and will require a little more cleaning in the assembly and potentially in the grinder, but I haven't had to do that yet. I hope you enjoy it, my mother and father in-law make it a point to get at least 1 cappuccino from the machine every time they visit. It's good for family relations! 🙂

  • @BryanKlein

    @BryanKlein

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@sauce6421 I suppose you could put some extra grounds in the top of the machine during the grind phase of the brew. I would just worry about putting too much in and increasing the stress on the brew group when it presses the grounds into a puck. The other option is to make the grind a bit more fine, for more surface area exposed to the water, but I've had good success with my grind setting around 9 and medium roast coffee. Please note that it does take a few grind cycles for changes to the grind setting to push the grounds through the little chute and into what is brewed. I found out from an authorized service center that there is a chute between the grinder and the brew group. Which means that the cup of coffee you are brewing now uses some grounds from 2-3 grinds prior. If you look down into the hatch at the top of the unit you can see the grinds drop out of the chute and into the brew group when grinding.

    Hello, it depends on the beans, but I usually leave mine around 6. You can go finer (3-5) for lighter roasts and more coarse (7-9) for darker roasts. It does take 2-3 grinds to fully transition from one grind setting to another, as there is a small chute that connects the grinder to the opening where the grounds drop down into the brew group. If you open the little door on the top of the machine and look down into it (might need a light), you can see the grounds drop down from the chute.

    I think so, we have tried quite a few (heavy cream, half-and-half, whole, 2%, rice, almond, silk), and some foam better than others. I would say to be careful of the thickness or viscosity of the milk used. If it is too thick it won't flow easily up the capillary tube to the venturi for steaming and frothing. This happens most famously with whipping cream. The thickness of Half-and-Half is about as thick as we have been able to go. We just stir in a bit of water to thin out the heavier milks when needed.

What grind setting should I be using and what milk? I despise low fat and nondairy. I prefer high fat milks.

    I have the grind setting with the marker on the left between the 8th and 9th dots on the knob. I only have used whole milk or a dilution of 50% Heavy Cream and 50% Water. You have to dilute the Heavy Cream or it won't flow up the channel to the steaming chamber. I usually go with Medium Roast beans with good results on flavor. For volume, if I set everything to the highest level, 'flavor' and 'water volume' and choose the 2x Coffee setting, I fill up a 16 oz mug. What settings are you using? I can try to recreate it here.

    I tried heavy cream. That was the problem. I will use the mixture of water and cream next time. I prefer keto very low sugar drinks, or straight black. I will see it that grind setting helps, also. I tried 2% I had on hand and it was MUCH frothier, and had more appropriate volume. Thank you for the tips. I'll let you know on the grind. I just ran an Americano.

  • @BryanKlein

    I see, the cappuccino option only does one serving at a time. But you could run it twice or more depending on the volume you want. You could also control the whole process manually and run just the espresso mode for as many shots as you like followed by the cappuccino mode with the "scoops of grounds" option so it doesn't grind beans and then press the stop button immediately after the milk serving is finished. You can run that as many times as you like to add the milk and foam to the desired quantity. I will say that I work from home and I've become spoiled with this machine. I don't need to take my beverages with me anywhere, so I typically make single servings at a time and make a fresh one whenever I want another. But I can see wanting huge mugs to go and needing to run the cycle more than once.

One last thing is to change the grind to something closer to 7-9, I have had good coffee with that range. You do need to wait for 2-3 grinds before all the previous grinds are through the grinder chute that leads to the basket and the new grind setting takes effect.
