I was 9 in 1970 but when Harry came in 1971 to usher in the Vet, it was like he’d been a Philly announcer his whole life. But it was banter between Whitey and Harry that us through though awful years. Ritchie’s ironic “Hard to believe Harry” when the Phillies made a particularly boneheaded play, and Harry’s rye response, that was classic. I REMEMBER LISTENING TO THIS LIVE. I was in the parking lot just outside the playground and Ostrich yard at Linvilla orchards just outside Philly. I remember just being devastated. I can’t imagine what it was like for guys who had been listening for decades. I had discovered baseball when I was ten as guys like Utley (the MAN), Jimmy, and Howard started coming through the ranks. Harry was all I knew (we weren’t wealthy enough to have cable, and when games were on TV, I wasn’t allowed to watch them, so I always listened to the games with my dad on the radio). Part of me is glad this clip made it to the internet, just so I can remember that moment sitting in the car with my dad. Crazy. Now, we are blessed to have Franzke. I will always remember where I was when I found out Harry had passed. Was about to go grocery shopping with my mom and for whatever reason I had a feeling come over me to turn the tv on before I left. I had the station set to ESPN as per usual and the scroll on the bottom was breaking news, Phillies longtime broadcaster Harry Kalas has passed away. I fell into the chair at the table I had just stood up from and felt the tears start to fall. He was the voice of every summer of my childhood for as long as I can remember whether it be at home bbqing in the backyard with family, blaring from a radio as me and my friends played ball at the local field, or down the shore with friends and family admiring the beautiful ocean sunsets and listening to our Phillies as only Harry could describe them. So thankful I got to spend 23 years of my life listening to Harry broadcast my favorite team in my favorite sport.

Phillies~Harry Kalas. Philly lost a true genuine gem.

I hadn't listened to this broadcast since the day it was posted back in April. It once again brought me to tears hearing the anguish and tears in Scott and L.A. as they talked about their good friend. Wouldn't it have been exciting to hear Harry's call of last night's 22 run outburst? So sad. I hope the Phils' decide to continue playing Harry's "Outta Here" call after each Phillies HR past this season. It makes it feel like summer at the ballpark.

That's good to know. Harry was that good, that his broadcasting style resonated even with non Phillies fans. He is my favorite broadcaster of all time. I'd even go so far as to say that Harry was to the Phils what Vin Scully was to the Dodgers.
@freakyfornash
7 жыл бұрын
He sure definitely was in every way. Granted he may have come off as a homer to some, but that's to be expected from announcers of their own teams to an extent, which you can't exactly fault Harry for by any means. At least he did so with the utmost class & professionalism, and just the right amount of enthusiasm most fans want their commentators to have. Jim Katt was the last true great play by play voice the Yankees have had I.M.O., even if he, as few were, wasn't quite no Harry Kalas. Harry's best friend & long time broadcast partner Richie Ashburn was another great, who Phillies fans were lucky to be able to listen to for so many years as well.

I hate to say it, but I was watching on TV and saw McCarthy's open, and although I hate to say it, I must admit that I didn't feel that he was particularly broken up about the loss of Harry. Indeed, he seemed to be excited about his increased role on the broadcast team....which is sad for him.

Watching old Phils games on KZread, some with out of town announcers, only makes me appreciate Harry more. So many such homers that they refer to their team as “we” and “us.” Meanwhile Harry, even though there were times when you wanted him to be MORE upset at a play that went against the Phils, his love of the game almost always transcended the Phillies and he was as genuinely stoked about a great play by the opposition as he was for one by the Phils. And of course there was that voice! And NFL Films. I grew up watching HBO’s Inside the NFL. Harry you will ALWAYS be The Voice.

I miss both of them the soundtrack of my youth..

Larry Anderson and Scott are total class! I miss H.K., but L.A. and Scott carry the torch.
I'll never forget hearing about his death. I was watching 6 abc in Philly when Jim Gardner came on and said he died. My mom and I who were both watching the TV at the time and we both screamed. We were both devestated. Little did I know that eighteen months later almost to the day I would lose my 60 year old mother just as suddenly as we lost Harry. May they both RIP. Thank you Mom and Harry you both made me love the Phillies!

I am a Nats fan and I remember this. XM Radio has the home feed usually, but on this day, it went with the road Phillies feed. The professionalism showed by The Philly broadcasters was exceptional. You know they had to be heartbroken.

the tv broadcasters was different
thanks for posting this, I missed that broadcast. And I will Always miss Harry. Thank You Harry for being the voice of the Phillies my whole life...
Out of all of the videos I have seen of Harry, this is by far, the best & most heartfelt, though the topper to completion would have been hearing Harry make the last call that led us to the WS '08. TY so very much for sharing this~I'm thankful I was able to stumble across this. Gone forever from sportscasting's future, but NEVER gone or lost in our ♥s. Forever the voice of the Phila.

They still play it after every home run at the Bank. That along with him singing "High Hopes" after every Phillies victory for that matter too.
Can't believe it's been 5 years already. Still miss you, Harry. I love the Phillies but it's not the same without you.

I know its definently not the same remember when he called the world series it was the best😔
I remember going bowling with my girlfriend and family. Right as we finished and was paying, the news came on the speakers at the ally. The bowling screens went right to the game and say everything and heard everything. Many people including myself were crying since we lost our voice, our father of baseball, the man that was never too sick to be at every ballgame. We miss him very much. All Phillies fans miss him. No one will ever forget HK.
RIP Harry. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Harry you knew that he was a great human being that loved the fans and never regarded himself as being better than anyone. He always had time to sign autographs for kids or chat about the Phillies. I don't think there will ever be a person who will touch so many people in the Philadelphia area they way Harry did.
watching the phillies on t.v will never be the same, R.I.P
It was like losing a relative. It still hurts.
Bit of trivia here for you guys, Matt Stairs was his final home run call the game before in Colorado, i remember thinking at the time that Matt Stairs, was now famous for 2 homers in my eyes
i listened to this live as soon as i got into my car...i was in tears
The voice of my innocent summers with dad on the front porch. Miss Harry!
everyone in Philadelphia did such a good job at remembering Harry and dealing with the shock on the day of and knowing that the show must go on. We miss him so much, its just no the same with out him... Last year was for the city of Philadelphia, this year is for Harry Kalas. HIGH HOPES! we miss you Harry!
This made me cry. I cried and cried on that day. R.I.P Harry
I was out riding my bike one day and came across the Laurel Hill Cemetery. I thought this place looks pretty cool. So I got to walking around and I came across the grave of the great Harry Kalas. There were two seats from Citizens Bank Park there so I sat with Harry for a while and just sat there and told him that we got Bryce Harper. Cool day
im a cubs fan and this still touched me
Baseball is so boring now without him...it's so sad. I'm born and raised in Philly and he was like everybody's grandpa or uncle and you could hear his voice coming from everybody's house. He's shining down on the Phils...hope they do it again this year...DO IT FOR HARRY!!! Last night's game was incredible...11-0!!!
How can even 2 people dislike this, And I am speaking as a Yankee fan
A big part of my childhood died the day Harry died i will miss him so much! God bless the Kalas family we love you.
@wotsup21 I cried just from listening to this audio; 9 months later. I'll never get over it. Harry was baseball in Philadelphia for the duration of my 33 years on this planet.
Coming from a Yankees fan, say what you want about the Phillies & their fans, but very rarely if ever will you find a better announcer than good old Harry The K was! Wish we had one as truly wonderful as he was, and R.I.P. :(

That's good to know. Harry was that good, that his broadcasting style resonated even with non Phillies fans. He is my favorite broadcaster of all time. I'd even go so far as to say that Harry was to the Phils what Vin Scully was to the Dodgers.

Alex Tomasone Harry unequivocally was and forever will be our version of Vin Scully. Every broadcaster in this town for each of our sports is and will always be found wanting because none will measure up to Harry.
I always loved Harry.....and this is coming from a Mets fan born in Brooklyn!
With all due respect, Mr. Franzke, it was not 1 of the greatest moments in Phillies history, it was THE greatest moment in Phillies history. The reason being is that it was the only World Series win that H.K. got to call for us. It still brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear his voice. May G-d rest your soul, Mr. Kalas and I am so glad that the Phillies fans let you know how loved you truly were and are. 🙏😢
awesome video made me cry like a baby harry k will be missed always
Of the videos I've seen of Harry, this is by far, the best & most heartfelt, though tearing Harry make the last call that led us to the WS '08. Gone forever from sportscasting, but never in our hearts. Forever the voice of the Phillies~Harry Kalas. Philly lost a true genuine gem, someone whose passion for the love of the game surpassed just about everything other than his own family. Miss you soo very much, Harry. The games called in Philly HAVE & NEVER will be the same since you & Whitey.
I will agree with many of you. HE WAS THE VOICE OF SUMMER. I tried watching the Phils on Comcast the other day and it just doesn't right. He is missed.
When I originally heard this I broke out in tears, I had a bad breakdown this day.
Not only did the Phillies lost a legend, but all of the MLB world. He will be missed.
R.I.P HK, Greatest Baseball Announcer EVER!!! God Bless HK and his family and friends, Amen.. Wish you were here calling games, but now your are calling them in and for the Kingdom of Heaven...
still makes me cry....luv ya haryy!
I loved Harry on Inside the NFL
not even the first game. it happened a week or two later working out at the gym, walking by the TV the game was one in the around the 7th or 8th inning. looked up to check the score and see what was going on. and thought something sounded diffrent and said "hmm wheres harry" and then a somber reality set in that i would never get to hear harry make a call again. thank you for your passion and dedication harry
RIP Harry. You will be missed.
such a great guy not one person has anything bad to say about him. The Phillies lost their voice Monday
rip harry we miss ya! lets win another one for harry
NFL films and Phillies baseball will forever make me think of Harry Kalas. God bless you, Harry. ;-)
Would like to thank the Yankees fans for their comments it shows class. On the field we want our team to win. But off the field we respect each others team. I wanted the Phillies to play the Yankees, because they're the best team in history. And you always want to beat the best. I hope this year they meet again, and THIS time the Phillies will win!
LETS GO PHILS!!!!! this one is for harry.....we love u and we miss u!!!! watch over us and guide us to another world championship
when the replay of the ninth inning was broadcast right after they came back from commercial and harrys voice came on there wasn't a dry eye in the house 1210' scott franzke and larry anderson did a great job that day we will miss you harry rip
Franzke's comments were so poignant at the start of the broadcast. Andersen's comments are so sincere also. I hate to say it, but I was watching on TV and saw McCarthy's open, and although I hate to say it, I must admit that I didn't feel that he was particularly broken up about the loss of Harry. Indeed, he seemed to be excited about his increased role on the broadcast team....which is sad for him.
i bet hes in heaven or some where still announcing Phillies games to the others watching the games. r.i.p harry.
harry is the man
R.I.P. HK. Best announcer ever.
I am happy to have heard Harry call out "THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL" he was one in a million, surely will be missed
Actually, on the day Rich Ashburn died, the other Phillies announcers decided not to work the game that night at Shea Stadium, and Kent Tekulve had the difficult task of flying solo that night, which he did, graciously and solemnly.
I rememberd coming home from Work whe I heard Harry Kalas Passd away. As a Phillies Fan like I am. It was like coming home and hearing that President Kennedy was shot. That was a sad day :( Rest in Peace Harry K
always my idol, always my hero God Bless You Harry Kalas
Watching old Phils games on KZread, some with out of town announcers, only makes me appreciate Harry more. So many such homers that they refer to their team as “we” and “us.” Meanwhile Harry, even though there were times when you wanted him to be MORE upset at a play that went against the Phils, his love of the game almost always transcended the Phillies and he was as genuinely stoked about a great play by the opposition as he was for one by the Phils. And of course there was that voice! And NFL Films. I grew up watching HBO’s Inside the NFL. Harry you will ALWAYS be The Voice.
God bless Harry. I can not fathom the boys of summer without THE Voice of Summer. He and Whitey are reunited.
How could 6 people dislike this? I'm speaking as a fan of the Chicago Cubs

This was an extremely SAD SAD day in Philly
@brawlfans34 Hey, you are free to think whatever you wish. Even if it is incorrect, as is the case here.
I was actually testing some audio equipment at work using my XM receiver tuned to the Twins game when the broadcasters mentioned the passing of Harry Kalas. I immediately tuned in the Nats game and they had the Philly feed on, which is unusual in itself because XM airs the home team's broadcast. Scott Frantzke was having great difficulty closing out the broadcast at the end when he mentioned Harry's name. It choked me up. I always tried to tune in Harry's inning of the Phillies game. R.I.P.
rest in peace
One of those you remember exactly where you were when you heard of HK's death. Many of us never met him yet we felt like he was (is) a part of our family. RIP-HK ...and what a HORRIBLE place to run that commercial just as we were waiting to hear HK's final out call, WPHT genius plays that silly commercial....sorta a bit of comic relief but not intended that way.
