Fun fact: The outside of this VCR was designed by Peter Doodson, who also designed the jewel case for CD's, as well as the Digital Compact Cassette. At the DCC Museum, we have a portfolio of a number of his designs that was given to the museum by his wife after he passed away a couple of years ago, and it features drawings of this VCR. We didn't know that it actually existed, either!

I remember these being advertised on billboards back in the day. I recall it displaying an image of a dinosaur or monster on its built-in screen.

I watched an old episode of Family Fortunes yesterday, and this was one of the prizes. Never seen it before, and wondered what make it was, etc. A day later, this video appeared. Spook.

Who needs A TV when there's one built-in to the VCR itself

Been years and I began to think that I imagined this VCR. Remember seeing this in high end hifi store. For some reason I always thought it was a Sony deck. Great vid 👍

hello, very first thing to do on G deck is mode switch cleaning. and i mean a real one, not just contact cleaner. there's 2 mode switch, one on the cassette carriage itself, and the one for the mechanism. they both need to be taken apart and deoxidized. the "hardest" to dismount is the mechanism mode switch, it's surface soldered, but not that complicated to get it. then they are super easy to open. G deck look complex, but it's really not the worst i've seen. if one day you get one of those philips charly deck... the G deck will look so simple and so pleasant to work on :D

Agree, done many G-mechs, both mode switches and careful reassembly, if it's not aligned correctly things break, especially that delicate little guide arm, never seen this model though must've been quite rare or super expensive.

I've still got a Sharp VC-ML3 VHS VCR in my home theatre rack, and after some belt replacements is still working perfectly :-) The LCD screen is a bit of a gimmick but I love it.

I was thinking it may have been a broken or stuck tape that had to be removed manually, before you suggested it. A nice machine for sure! Incidentally, I think OTR could stand for 'One Touch Record', but I don't know for certain.📼

I use to buy What Video magazine each month. I repaired 1000s of video recorders back in the day and use to service them, etc. use to make good money back in the day. I still have most of my special equipment you need to service these things. How things have all changed now.

I do really miss proggamin my jvc hifi video, recording in simlcast before nicam stereo was a thing……archiving the tapes, taking care of the whole a/v system tape deck, vhs, laserdisc, record player. Any man born in the 60’s and 90,s was proud of his stereo.

NV-J30 / 35 uses the G mech, as does pretty much every Panasonic video from 1990-1995, then the K mech came in. The G mech was so complex it had it's own service manual called No G or N0 G, I've re-aligned 100's of these decks back in the day. If it's one of the ones that uses a mode switch, swap it out, and the P5 arm that broke off.

You should try getting that broken part 3D printed. I actually have a similar Philips remote control - it's for a PIP (picture in picture) TV and has all the VCR buttons and a hefty sized 4 AA battery compartment. Looks like the same era as yours.....

You are correct. Someone else mentioned it further down in the comments. I didn't know about it until now.

Philips showed everything in technology what is in use today in the 90's like the motion flow , HD, and finally are out .

That magazine review is... quite something.

I Have one of those Philips VCR with LCD on top of my wardrobe from memory in needs a new pinch roller last used it to copy cctv off a 24h tiimelapes VCR the built in screen was handy - the 300R Aerials plug is probably off one of the horrible loop Aerials

it was an excellent idea, but it was a low-spec machine. Being at least hi-fi would have made the deck much more desirable

I know Panasonic when I see one :D And it is good. The version of these with the "charly deck" mechanism was absolutely dreadful. It´s great that this one doesn´t have it.

Nice video, I remember this in the Philips catalog back in the day. Thought it was cool.. I seem to remember maybe Panasonic or Sony also doing a unit like this, but hen again my memory is a bit fuzzy fro that time frame :) so i might be wrong on that.

I still have a PHILIPS VR6585, purchased in December 1989, and a VR6785 (SVhs) purchased in March 1991. When I put them on a shelf more than 15 years ago they were both working. They have the same mechanics and, presumably, it should be the same as your VR6680. So try looking for one of these two models in the used market. Best regards.

I actually had an Akai VCR around 1992. I do not recall the model number but I think it had a jog dial. It was a really nice machine. I recall watching Star wars on it again for the upteenth time and noticed colours and definition that I had not seen before on my old 80's vcrs.

I have one of those remotes (AV5680), some buttons are different or changed places. Probably was just curious about the LCD and picked it up from the trash or something.

I never knew a VCR like that existed 😮

Wow thanks. I watched all there videos when they were first broadcast back in 1991-92 I think it was. They are available on youtube remastered.Tim has made new videos since. Sadly Rex passed away some years ago. Those shows have been a big inspiration to me. Thanks for watching and the sub.

16:54 Verify if that transparent gear on the left is soft/flexible or not. If it is soft, take measurements (or a cast!) of it right now, because the flexible-ish gears always crumble eventually.

In the early 80s i used to work in a Tv repair shop and i remember seeing a similar vcr with a small screen on the front panel but this one had a small colour crt poss about 3" tube. seeing this video reminded me of that vcr i cannot remember the make of it but i seem to think it was a either a panasonic or an akai machine.

@RetroGadgetMan Thank you for that. That was the machine i remember repairing all those years ago. I seem to remember the fault i had was similar and that was caused by the end of tape sensor on the right side of the deck as viewed from the front of the machine. this was causing the machine to think the tape was at the end or beginning where the clear leader is. The sensor went a bit low in resistance but not a complete short, causing the input to the controller was sitting right on the trigger threshold.

Wow what are the chances of it being the same machine. I wonder if I bypass the sensor it will trick it into working. Someone else mentioned that the 10uf electrolytic caps being bad too.

I distinctly remember this VCR, and seriously considering it, but soon realising the screen was totally pointless.

It was a bit of a gimmick. Bit still pretty cool.

The best use that had was putting 3-4 VCR's in a close on a switcher that runs around the house, can FF or RW to where you want it then go back to the room your sending it to. I had to pause to put my prediction in. Normally I find when an old VHS is taking the tape and spitting it right back out it's just the grease on the tracks dried up, stops it from getting fully seated and something detects it as not fully seated and it ejects. Guess Ill never know :(

You might want to correct the spelling of Philips in the title of this video. The machine reminds me of my totally mad Grundig VS-680 VPT S-VHS machines which were built around the same Panasonic chassis but have lots of very different electronics.

if mechanism going to end or doing idiotic moves You have to clean "mechanical position switch" - it can be on top ringht side under pinch roller - its very frequently to cleaning it mechanics looks like Panasonic J35 and its very popular (and very good) mechanics

I stumbled across your video KZread suggested it i have 2 faulty panasonic nv f55 these from what a google search suggest are panasonic g decks, one seems like it has a good mechanism but loading assembly is broken the other has a good loading mech but the main g deck mech is damaged .i would be willing to donate and pay postage for both machines if it would help fix this as they are both taking up space plus if the heads are the same you have a few spares you will have to swap the good loading mech onto the good deck .

i vaguely remember that vcr

I remember my father in the late 80s early 90s brought a very cheap vcr home and said I could use it in my bedroom for a while see if it was any good (not this model) I noticed the picture was ok but not in my eyes perfect as I was an avid vhs collector by my mid teens and had already a better vcr in my room, so not really very experience but wanting to at least see If I could make the picture better I took the top off and noticed the silver spinning head, so thought maybe I could make it have an even better finish like a mirror, so got some Duraglit from the cupboard (yes the metal polish) and rubbed away, over a short period i noticed after each application instead of getting better and better the mirror finish I expected was completely now a matt finish I had totally as you can guess ruined the head, after a while terrified of what my father would say he did eventually ask me if any good, I think my reply was nah picture is terrible, Im sure he believed me as nothing seemed to come of it, so we can all make mistakes plus the whole timing thing I never did figure out.

well. i guess you could simply ask philips for a stack of 1990s 'philips magazines' :P which is the magazine they send shitpiles of to all resellers containing -all- their stuff for that year :P (well all the consumer stuff anyway, not the medical and military stuff ;)

I'm guessing that this deck was used for linear editing?

Mode switch could be dirty as it's a panasonic deck if gears are not broken that's triggered the solenoid and popped the timing out

compromise compromise :) hi-fi + lcd would have made this machine too expensive.

That yellowy brown color all over everything in it, including the stickers on the back look alot like it came from a heavy smoker household. Gross.
