Desafortunadamente no podemos porque los nacionalistas especialmente los historiadores filipinos estan siempre enojados cuando algunos de nosotros querer estudiar el idioma castellano porque todos los documentos del nuestro historia estan escritos en Espanol y no todos los filipinos son muy interesados en estudiando el idioma porque es tan dificil.

It will give livelihood to many Filipinos. Don’t u know bilingual call center agents are earning at least 80,000php a month? It’s sad that you have innate hispanophobic biases. Try to look for the better side of it.

@@ajguias7611 learning Spanish is of course embracing colonizers culture! why the need to learn it instead of learning and preserving our own Baybayin and Tagalog. That's why Filipino sometimes not viewed as Asian coz they keep lynching to other culture. Try to look at our Asian neighbor if they encouraged their people to learn their colonizers culture, Vietnam by French, Indonesia by Dutch, Malaysia by British And you're saying you earn big in call center by learning two language? China, Japan and Korea become a powerhouse country by sticking to their own culture you don't need to adopt other culture bcoz you think that's "cool" try to see the bigger picture

Filipino culture is still very much hispanic. Throw a filipino into any Hispanic country and we will assimilate very easy. Only difference between us is we forgot how to speak Spanish. But our mannerisms, customs and courtesies are still very much hispanic. There’s many of us who want Spanish back as an official language and it almost happened back in 2010 I think. The Filipina president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, went to Spain to make Spanish an official language of the country again. But the Prime Minister of Spain at the time, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, didn’t agree with it because he thought it was spreading Spanish imperialism. I hope one day Philippines will try again and Spain with its new leaders will reconsider.

@@jerellordonio4745 : Very interesting your comment. I think the Philippines don't need the Spanish gouvernment permission to make the Spanish language official again in your country. If the Philippines want to recover the Spanish language I think it will have a strong help in the Hispanoamerican countries. In Latin America we feel that chinese, japanese, indonesians, malaysians, koreans, etc. are very different cultures compared to ours. It is not the same with filipinos. I hope you will return to the Hispanic Fraternity. Filipinos are a so gently, smiling and friendly people, and the country is extremely beautifull. We need you closer.

Our original culture is forgotten, the culture we have during the Pre-spanish colonial period. We were brainwashed by the spaniards, took over our country for 300+ years, and change our original beliefs, culture, and tradition into something hispanic. That's what we have forgotten. We have forgotten the real identity of filipinos or shoul I say the original locals of our Islands

Spaniards never erase the filipino native languages and cultures. Also many filipinos kept their muslem religion.

@@jappy346 : Your point of view is very intererestig and I share most of your ideas. We in Latin America are recovering many native languages and indian traditions. We feel we must keep natives cultures and heritage. On the other side, we think that the spanish language is very useful for us because we can communicate with more than 550,000,000 people in more than 20 countries. During colonisation many abuses were commited like in every colonisation, but Spaniards tought us many good things also. If filipinos want to recover the baybaing alphabet and the old native cultures they can do it. But are you going to change the latin alphabet? Are you going to erase the English language? Spaniards never forced the filipinos to learn Spanish (the USA forced the filipino to use only English in educational system and forbidden the use of Tagalog and Spanish). Spaniards tought to filipinos about modern medicine, about modern architecture, about modern laws and administration, about press, literature, technology, etc. I think there are many good things in this. You say there are some Spanish words in filipino languages: well that's normal in any language. Spanish have many words comming from arab, from latin, from germanic, from greek, from celtic, from nahatl, from quechua, etc. (also some words comming from tagalog). English is a mix of many languages as anglo, saxon, danish, latin, french, etc. Thailand maintain their language and own alphabet, that is correct because they are protecting their heritage and culture. But to communicate with the world they normaly use latin alphabet and one of the international languages. Filipino culture is very rich because to the austronesian base you add useful elements comming from Spanish, Chinese, Arab, USA, etc. So filipino identity is composed with all these influences. I think you must be proud of what you are: a rich and strong culture.

Pobrecitos. Les robaron su patrimonio los gringos. Lo triste es que ellos tienen una literatura a la cual ya no tienen acceso que representa siglos de inspiración artística en la lengua castellana. Es como que les hayan arrancado un trozo de su identidad. Lo bueno es que bastantes de ellos ahora han despertado y están queriendo re apoderarse de esta parte de su herencia. Pero, lo que pasa es que les cuesta mucho trabajo. No es lo mismo crecer con una lengua que tener que estudiarla ya siendo adultos. Aún sin la lengua, muchas cosas de la Super cultura hispánica aún perduran en los filipinos. Cuando los latinos y los filipinos nos encontramos en países extranjeros, sucede un fenómeno parecido al encontrarse con una persona que se conoció en el pasado distante pero que se encuentra con uno de repente y uno se pregunta en donde la ha visto. Es una sensación bastante curiosa

We have our own culture and identity before colonization of spain. They force our ancestors to embrace hispanic culture as part of colonization process or shall we say Hispanicization. But still I recognize that hispanic culture plays a big contribution to my identity. We did not abandon hispanic culture at all. Just the spanish language because we have our own universal language which is tagalog and considering my Austronesian regional language which is Hiligaynon/ilonggo. We can learn Spanish language in school maybe. I doubt it will be included in Primary or Secondary education. Also note that even in hiligaynon language, there are lot of hispanic words. Even in cuisine, architectures, literature. We are still using those buildings built by spain since 1800 or 1900 like churches and cathedrals, bridges. So Hispanic Influences already in our filipino culture and so it is not fair to say that we abandon hispanic culture. and by the way, blame USA for banning Spanish language in philippines during their colonization for 40+ years. So don't forget us We are still your brother in pacific.

​@@mikebluegalindez5329 That is a lie. Priests also used baybayin to preach. If anything they encouraged its use (the kudlit diacritic used in baybayin to turn syllables into a consonant was a Spanish creation, that is why it is shaped like a cross). Both baybayin and latin script were used during Spanish time as attested by the Doctrina Christiana. Also by all the bulk of oral history and mythology we still have, if Spaniards were really trying to erase culture they did a terrible job.

Contrary to popular belief, Spanish was our lingua franca before it was replaced by English and Filipino. Filipino which was based on Tagalog was simply one of the many mother tongues we have. It is not the dominant local language of our nation. The only way to communicate across many of our tribal groups is we have to speak in a common language, that is a foreign language. In fact most Filipinos even to this day have a hard time speaking pure Filipino, even the local Tagalogs, much more for the other ethnolinguist people. As much as we Filipinos may condemn Spain for mistreatment of her colony, she did influenced a lot of our culture. So how did it faded in our minds?. Well... Americanos. I say this to my Hispanic friends that Filipinas is and is still part of the Hispanidad and needed to be affirmed as. We very much need interaction. We very much need cultural rejuvination. This will come from the recognition of Las Islas Filipinas. ¡Viva Filipinas!

I am a Filipino with Spanish Decent, growing up i would always be called this term 'mestizo' that i didn't really understood back then, i thought it was just because the color of my skin is white, and growing up studying on a public school here in the Philippines i would always notice that on every classes there are a lot of mestizos/mestizas, there are also a lot of chinese looking kids, also a lot of mexican looking kids, and some look like indigenous Filipinos, i dont find anything wrong or weird about it growing up since its like a normal thing from my perspective as a kid. but knowing more about the history of Philippines, indeed the biggest contributor to our current culture is from the Spanish Era here in the Phiippines

here in latin america are a lot of us who are considered mestizos here means a mix ancestry either from native american and europe, or europe and african, or even european, asiatic, and native all the combination are posible even native american and filipino.

Me hubiera gustado que filipinas nunca hubiera perdido el idioma español. Hasta el portugues se conserva en asia y del español solo quedaron vestigios en idiomas criollos y austranesios. Almenos se sigue estudiando, en surcorea, japon, china, taiwan e israel

Ok na yan na mas assoicated tayo bilang asyano kaysa sa mga gagong puti na yan. I have always wanted to learn spanish and make it our 2nd language to tagalog or make it 1st. (i won't mind). There is always a part of me that this is our history despite of what happened back then, I thought we or at least, I need to remember spanish as our language too. En Texas many Hispanics still make use of the Spanish language as a medium of communication. We use English as a medium of instruction but many of us have not forgotten our mother tongue. The same process of language erasure was used here. We just went on t learn a second language (English) but did not forget who we are. My great great grandfather was one of the founders of a small town in Pangasinan. His Spanish blood has run through his descendants. I had few yrs of Spanish education in Catholic school. Having lived in Canada for almost 50 yrs, I've picked up a few yrs of Spanish along with other languages. Spanish is a beautiful language, much easier than French or German!

Yes we are Asian but our culture and heritage is not Asian.

Imagine how good your Spanish would be if you were educated in the language for 10+ years. This was the case with educated Filipinos during the Spanish and Early American period. Its just that at this times, the majority of Filipinos were not educated because the country was still largely agricultural. The Americans rebooted the education system from Spanish based to English based, and so it is that you read my words now in English. My generation was the first to not have any Spanish requirement at all, my parents were the last. We abandoned the Spanish subject in school for practical reasons. The language was dying and our ties to Spain and Latin America was difficult due to geographical distance. But, I think that had we kept the Spanish requirement, more Filipinos would be speaking Spanish today due to the liberation of global media and the internet. More Filipinos in the 90s would have watched the Mexican telenovelas in Spanish and that could have caused a revival. Today, we have a small revival due to economic reasons. The call center agents who are proficient in Spanish can earn double, so many do so. On KZread, there is also more material like this that helps elucidate the forgotten histories. Hopefully, that can lead to more things.

Philippines is by the way shared and have same culture with Latin American countries eapecially closer to Mexica. The culture of the Philippines is hispanic or Spanish based in all aspects. It is Asian by location but western by culture. A sister country of the Latin separated by the Pacific ocean from its sater countries of Latin America.

To you who bastardize the standard spelling of the Spanish words like "España" to Espanya, "cultura" to kultura, "municipio" to munisipyo, "coche" to kotse, "banco" to banko, "leccion" to leksyon, "appelledo" to apelyedo, "jamon" to hamon, "cuatro" to kwatro, and hundreds upon hundreds of Spanish words, you are contributing to the demise of the Spanish language in the country! Subtle as it may seem, but when you patronize this trend and continue to butcher the spelling of these words when you write them, you are not doing justice to the Spanish language.

They are not bastardized, my friend, they are "filipinized". Those words might have different spellings but it serves as a convenience to a Filipino rather than a Spanish speaking person. The Spanish language of the Philippines was filipinized a difference of the Spanish language of the Americas which was "adoptized". That`s why all of the former Spanish colonies of the Americas can mutually understand the Spanish language but not the Philippines. The Philippines chose a different path when it comes to language policy; that is why the national language of the Philippines is called FILIPINO not Spanish nor English. If any Filipino who wants to learn the Spanish language he can learn it the Spanish way. Don`t confuse one from the other because they are totally different languages.

I had not heard this musical piece ,”tigiding,tigadong” of Pilita Corales until now…btw I had learned her ‘Usahay’ ( still mastering the classic Visayan song Matud Nila y my first favorito )but haven’t found a Tagalog translation ( I am a Tagalog y my abuela was from Pampangga…but had lived in Bataan for the rest of her life…my abuelo was fr Malate…); I speak a poco kapangpangan,Ilocano,Zambal,a little Spanish( fr secondary y tertiary level education but nor so well versed…my kid speaks y writes mandarin y now taking Spanish…y so good in computer language etc…; I told her to appreciate languages…though she haven’t picked up Tagalog…I did teach them to speak y break down basic rules eg conjugation etc…

I don’t think we have amnesia of our heritage, the problem was when Americans took over the Philippines 🇵🇭 they made a lot of changes , one of which was changing Spanish to English as the method of instructions in school. Then Spanish culture slowly faded.

@@KrshnVisualizer whether they like it or not the fact remains that it is the Spanish language and cultured that propelled Filipinos to great heights -- in our intellectuals, writers, artists and what have you. Some of these Filipinos had been able to go to the cultural hubs of Europe like Barcelona and Rome because of the opportunity in the empire. It is also through the Spanish bringing the faith that many generations of our ancestors had the opportunity to know our Lord and be saved.

I mean historically, only the elite and privileged speak and understand Spanish. They are the only ones who can write and read it. Majority of the natives don't even go to school. The public school system was given to everyone regardless of status during the American occupation that is why the Philippines are English speakers even up to now. If only Spanish was taught and implemented in the educational system today aside from the many languages the Philippines has then I am sure majority of the Filipino's will be able to speak Spanish. The only living creole language in the country is Chavacano.

That statement is false. Public school system was introduced by Spain in the Islas Filipinas in 1863. And even long before that decree, every town already had a school. Meanwhile in the US, the last state Mississippi got obligatory education only in 1918. Manuel Luis Quezon y Molina: “Había escuelas públicas en Filipinas mucho antes de la ocupación americana, y que, de hecho, yo me había educado en una de esas escuelas, aunque mi pueblo natal es un pueblo tan pequeño, aislado en las montañas de la parte Noreste de la Isla de Luzón. ...en época tan lejana como el año 1866 cuando la población total de las Islas Filipinas era solamente de 4,411,261 almas y cuando el total de municipios en el Archipiélago era de 900, el total de las escuelas públicas era de 841 para niños y 833 para niñas y el total de niños que asistían a esas escuelas era de 135,098 y el de niñas 95,260. Because only the elite and those who can afford Indio's (Native Filipino's) such as the Ilustrados can go to school. But if you're a child of a simple Magsakaka or Alipin then I doubt you can go to school. And an archipelago like the PH a lot still can't speak the language especially those part of the Indigenous groups. Those mentioned are actually from the rich and privilege class.

@@bebu4ever of course the natives were allowed. They were created especially for the natives. They were so few Spanish and Spanish mestizo kids, most of them were all natives. Public schools created by the Spanish government were for free. Nothing had to be paid. It was meant for the poor and ordinary people to get free education.

Probably in some parts in Luzon particularly in Intramuros and nearby villages but all over the Philippines? NO. Majority of Mindanaoans hardly had any Spanish related words in our languages, unless you are Chavacano. My ancestors dont even have records of speaking Spanish. My Great grandparents don't even know the language except telling us stories about the white men abusing them and taking their lands.

@@_elle819 : English is not an original language in the Philippines. Also Tagalog is not the native language in all Philippines. Nowadays The official languages are Filipino (Tagalog) and English. If Spanish become official language in the Philippines it would be a big advantage . More than 300 years of filipino history is writted in Spanish and this language could open new markets for filipino products in more than 20 countries.

You know what, why we learn and speak English because it can also open opportunities but what about now? Why we still a 3rd world country? Sorry to say this but there’s nothing remotely Spanish about the Philippines other than Catholicism and a few Spanish loan words - most of the world views and sees us as an Asian country, most people including Spaniards don’t even know we were colonised by Spain. Filipino culture is also mostly Asian, our cuisine- like most Asian countries rice is the staple food - Filipino cuisine bears undeniable similarities to the cooking styles of its neighbouring countries, languages, folklore, way of life, and people are majority genetically Asian. Language is the most basic and most important element in a culture. The Languages of the Philippines are all Austronesian languages and a close cousin of both Malay varieties in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. Spanish loan words make up only a small proportion and many are not even known to the average Filipino as they are ARCHAIC and the Tagalog or English equivalent is used 100% of the time, many have also been converted into Filipino morphology so they no longer even look Spanish . Hispanic influences are Christianity, surnames, etc Even “Filipino Catholicism” is actually “Folk catholicsm “ a combination of the religion the Spanish brought and the local animist and traditional beliefs.. many traditions from indigenous Philippine folk religions have been integrated into the local practice of Catholicism and Islam, resulting in "Folk Catholicism. The conservative traditionalist superstitious culture are all products of an Asian culture. Consider it like Britain's relationship to India. There are just numerous bubbles of resistance , a small minority migration of colonisers (Spaniards) , and self-preservation that prevented a complete takeover unlike most of Latin America. Filipinos with Spanish blood are also a very small minority representing only about 0.2% of the population or so, most were literally wiped out during world war 2 and others had fled the Philippines. So Spanish Filipino mestizos are extremely rare while Chinese mestizos are extremely common everywhere in the Philippines as 30% of Filipinos have Chinese blood, the Chinese made a much greater impact than the Spaniards. . This concept of some Filipinos wanting to be Hispanic is a laughable delusional obsession with Europe or Hispanic culture.

So what do you think the true identity is of a Filipino? It is not we are wanting to be Hispanic, but it is our actual identity that was lost once the Americans arrived in like the 1900s. Our identity is not completeley Hispanic in a sense, because we have ton of other Asian points in our culture. And don't compare our history like India has with Britain, those are different events. The great contribution of the "Hispanidad" was our religion that brought the country as ONE nation, and a religion that lasted for 500 years. Yes, mistakes were done by the Spaniards, (like the abusive friars, abusive officials, etc.) but we were once true friends with Spain. It's a shame that a Filipino would look at their history in a negative way while chanting Viva Sto. Nino or while singing Ave Maria

Filipino culture is a mix Austronesian and Spanish, with other influences from East Asia, the USA, India, etc. We must separate some technical concepts: to be Asian is about a geographical situation. There are many different cultures and races in Asia. The racial concept is about genetics. There are people of mongolian race not only in Asia but also in the Americas, in Europe, etc. Culture or ethnicities are concepts regarding to language, songs, dances, art, poetry, architecture, gastronomy, , traditions, clothing, laws, religion, etc. So we must say that the Philippines have a strong Spanish cultural influence: The filipino languages uses latin letters, there are many Spanish words in these languages, the principal religion is catholicism, most names of filipinos are in Spanish, as the names of streets, cities, towns, beaches, etc. There are also influences in gastronomy, in cermonies, in old architecture, etc. I agree with you when you say that some filipinos look at Spanish influence in a negative way. It's a pity. Spaniards welcome thousend filipinos immigrants in Spain and after just two years there they could have the Spanish nationality. No other immigrants have this privilege. Filipinos are easily adapted in Spain because of cultural affinities.
