PHILIPPINES MOST DANGEROUS REGION? Motor Travel Alone In BARMM (Experiences With Muslims)

If you asked people in the Philippines, I bet many would say that BARMM, the "Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao", is the most dangerous Region in the country.
Why? Kidnappings, bombings, conflicts, and terrorist groups... that is basically what you will see about this region of the Philippines in media. And yes, there have been those issues. But that doesn't mean that the majority of people and Muslims living in this region of the Philippines and peace loving, kind, friendly, and beautiful!
Which is exactly what I experienced on this solo motor travel day in Cotabato City, Parang, and Lanao Del Sur.
This is my experiences in Muslim Mindanao, driving a scooter alone through what is considered "the most dangerous" places in the Philippines.
I start in Cotabato City by the Rio Grande de Mindanao River... head to Parang and eat the famous Halo-Halo in the market... and finish hanging out with a beautiful Maranao community eating their locally made Dudul!
*** DON'T TRAVEL ALONE HERE IF YOU AREN'T EXPERIENCED AND DON'T HAVE LOCAL FRIENDS. YES, THERE ARE BAD ELEMENTS AROUND.
But there is also so much beauty!
Power On!

I truly admire Kulas for his efforts to change the negative image portrayed by most Filipinos towards Muslim communities. It's quite obvious from the comments that those misconceptions in the past is still there. I wish you all the best Kulas. You're a hero.

The first time I went to the Philippines it seemed so alien, but I wound up in a small city where I didn't know anyone. I sat down on a bench to take in the surroundings and within minutes I was chatting away to complete strangers about my life and their lives and where we were each from and our families. Filipinos are not scary. They are outgoing and just the most friendly people I have ever met. That's why I now have more friends there than I do back in the UK. I love that you show the best thing about life there. Keep on bringing us these great vlogs !

Open letter to anyone in the North and Central, reading this. If you're aware of these issues, then good for you. Now spread the awareness to your hard-headed friends/ families: As somebody who lives in Mindanao, it annoys me so much that whenever I go to Manila, people ask me where I'm from (cuz of my Bisaya accent when speaking Tagalog) and when I say I'm form Mindanao, it was a shocker to them. They treated me differently and were more wary. I found out that these are the 5 common reasons why: 1. Uneducated - Cuz they think we can't speak and understand Tagalog..WTF?! 2. Poor - Cuz they think we got no roads, bridges, malls, cinemas, etc 3. Ignorant - Cuz they think people from the provinces are somewhat exotic and should be treated as if we're newly borns experiencing the "city life". Just cuz we got no KFC in some smaller cities does not mean we're "missing out" on life. 4. Muslim - Not everyone who lives in the South is a Muslim. There's other religions too. Also, if I was indeed a Muslim, What's so wrong about being a "Muslim in Mindanao"? What difference is that to being "Muslim in Manila?" Are Muslims in Manila more respected because they were BORN and GREW up in Manila? I don't get it. 5. Terrorist - Bruh, we get it. There's kidnappings and domestic terrorism happening here but that doesn't mean EVERYONE living here is in cahoots with the terrorists. Even Muslims don't associate themselves with terrorists. Also... I would like to mention as well about Martial Law (during the Duterte Admin). YES, it was necessary to have Martial Law implemented in Mindanao because it PROTECTED US. Mindanao folks abided with the law to keep ourselves safe when the Maute Group invaded. We're alive and well because we followed orders. We followed the curfew. It doesn't mean we're "Sheeps" as well. While we're being law adibing citizens, folks up North are protesting to "FREE MINDANAO FROM MARTIAL LAW"...this issue isn't reaching the north, they're not the ones being killed, bombed, and threatened, - so why are they getting in the way of our troops? Little advice: Stop concerning yourselves with things that aren't directly affecting you in the slightest. Stop acting like heroes. We needed protection, not political bullshit. But anyways... Back to the first paragraph, I swear I could feel them re-adjust themselves as if trying to see if I might hurt them. I'm not even Muslim yet it hurts. If they talk shit about the Muslim community in Mindanao, I will not throw them under the bus. I will defend my Muslim bros and sis. Negative criteria is always painted in the media towards us. And that's never gonna end unless you (reader) educate your ignorant friend/families/relatives of this issue. I find it funny how Filipinos support in ending international racism/prejudice but fail to do the same for their local kababayans.

Hello, Kulas! Ingat or take care in maranao is "pigilay ka." Roughly translated into "watch out" but that's what we say when we mean keep safe or ingat. Anyway, thanks for showing to the rest of the country that Filipino Muslims are friendly and genuine and that Muslim places in the country are not that dangerous as others depict them to be. Kudos! :)

Filipino muslims are filipinos and share the same friendly and hospitable traits just like their filipino christian brothers. You won’t be able to tell the difference. I worked in Lanao del Sur long time ago and not once did I feel threatened or scared.

Yes, Iranon, Maguindanao, Tausug, and Mranao share the same base language which is bahasa mixed with arabic. We actually can't understand each other perfectly as some words mean differently and being used diffrently. Like for example "Mapiya Mapita" which is good morning in Maguindanaon but it actually literally translate to "Good Tomorrow" in Mranao. Mranaos say "Mapiya Kapipita" for good morning. But "Let's Eat" or "Kuman Tano" is the same for Iranon and Mranano. So yeah, we are the same yet diffferent much like how Bisaya is spoken differently in different parts of the country. Anyway, welcome to BARMM. We are Filipinos too and it's a shame not much local tourists go to Muslim Mindanao. Always take care sa biyahe, lods.

I'm crying...this is SO beautiful...ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS CONTENT FROM THE HEART! ALL BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, RATHER BLOGGED/VIDEO RECORDED...AS IF IT CAME STRAIGHT FROM A BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN NOVEL. IT TO ME WOULD HAVE WON A PULITZER PRICE WIN FOR SURE! I never heard of a Iranian Place in Philippines. I think the misconceptions come from negative "1sts"; one's who spread those types of VERY BAD & SAD rumors. You have shown such "Loving Folks" here within your video content. I'm a 67 yr old widow, who married Sept. 2, 1976, at age 18, when my husband 19 years young, was home on a 28 day leave from the Navy...aboard the (now moth-balled...& sunk off the Eastern Atlantic Coast of N.Y's Atlantic Ocean...to form a corral reef...makes me so SAD our Daughter & others will never be able to set foot upon the fine "MIGHTY O's" 3 football size fields... ever in their lifetime. He was on the Aircraft Carrier, "The U.S.S. ORISKANY CVA-34", Stationed in the USA San Francisco, California (Alameda Navel Docks)...in the 1970's...during the tail end of the Vietnam War Era...for 3 years...& stationed overseas..."West-Pac"("Western Pacific"...in the South China Seas); for an average stay of 8-10 months out of a year...the 3 years he was overseas...in "Subic Bay", Phillipines. It was VERY, VERY DIFFICULT ON ALL MARRIED COUPLE'S BEING AWAY FROM OUR SPOUSES BACK THEN!! We only had means of communication via snail mail "🐌✉️💌📫📬"...or ⚓️Airmail✈️🛩🛫⚓️ per letters or cassette 📼 tapes where we'd be able to hear our loved ones voice on a tape recorder...with a plug--in heaeing device...where nobody else could hear what we were saying...other than our spouses...or hear each other's love songs we'd send to one another. A letter in the least took 10 days to receive...& during WAR time...up to 30-40 days per letter max at times. We DIDNT HAVE cell phones, internet, or email back then yet. TODAY'S SPOUSES ARE SOOOOOOOO VERY LUCKY! THEY ALL GET TO RECEIVE EMAIL EVERYDAY WITH PICTURES, AS WELL AS VOICE LINKS, AND CELL PHONE CALLS ETC, ETC, ETC!!! Rotary phones was all we had. It was a rarity we'd receive a phone call from our spouse. I received one phone call during Christmas time at 2:00 a.m....where I had to yell VERY LOUD ,so we COULD hear one another's voice. VERY AWKWARD...WHEN I WAS LIVING AT MY DAD'S & STEPMOM'S (I DIDNT CARE...IN TEARS I TOLD HIM I LOVED & I MISSED HIM VERY, VERY, MUCH...BUT THE PRIVATE STUFF I COULD NOT SAY...IT WAS VERY AWKWARD INDEED!! 🤣🤣🤣🤭I lived with my Dad & my Stepmom until February 1974...then I moved back with my Mom & my 2 little Brothers...until my Hubbie came home; & we got our own Apt.; in the city of Long Beach, California. ..where his ship ported in the USA for a whole year!! I TRY & LOOK AT THE HAPPINESS IN LIFE. YOUR SIGHT MADE ME CRY BECAUSE YOUR HEARTFELT VIDEO[S] IS HOW I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD TREAT ONE ANOTHER! WHEN I SAW YOU WITH YOUR PARENTS. ..IT BROUGHT SO MUCH JOY & HAPPINESS TO ME! PLEASE KEEP STAYING IN TOUCH WITH THEM! ITS SO PRECIOUS THIS BOND, THIS LOVE YOU ALL HAVE FOR ONE ANOTHER! KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ONE ANOTHER. DONT ALLOW THE DISTANCE OF CANADA & THE PHILIPPINES TO MAKE THE MILES IN DISTANCE...TAKE AWAY FROM THE LOVE YOU ALL KEEP CLOSE TO YOUR HEARTS FOR EACH OTHER. IT IS SO VERY BEAUTIFUL THIS LOVE YOU ALL HAVE FOR ONE ANOTHER!! IM SO HAPPY THEY MADE THIS TRIP FINALLY TO THE PHILLIPINES!! IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL YOUR VIDEO OF LOVE OF "YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY". In OUR life, as my husband & I started out our HAPPY & BEAUTIFUL journey in life together as Husband & Wife...I graduated from the 12th grade. (He didn't want me living alone...& man oh man was he ever right! I was so lonely! Being with family helped so much! I worked too... the graveyard shift...5pm to 2:30 a.m. then went to High School at 8:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m....so I didn't get much sleep. It was the 1st year ever I got all A's...a perfect 4.5 GPA (Grade Point Average...I was just a intelligent young girl...& I had more than enough credits...that I was able to graduate early...in January 1974! I returned June 1974, to graduate with my class, & my husband got to see his wife graduate [!!!]; as he'd just come home one week before I graduated! He paid a Sailor...to do his "Duty "; all approved by his CEO Officer in Charge. We also did NOT have married housing OR the pay...tax free...like married Spouses receive today. Today married couples receive SO MUCH MORE than we ever had. I'd NOT changed ANY of it either. We loved one another deeply. I DO WISH ID NOT BEEN SO HARD ON THE FILLIPINA BAR GIRLS ETC...NOW THAT I KNOW MORE ABOUT THEIR WAYS OF LIFE. I WAS ONLY 18.. SO I HOPE I'M FORGIVEN! I WASNT ALONE IN MY FEELINGS THE WAY THAT I FELT BACK THEN IN 1973-4...OR "WHY". MANY FILLIPINAS I TALK TO NOW TELL ME THEY 💯% UNDERSTAND "HOW" AND "WHY" I FELT AS I DID BACK THEN. THEY TOO WOULD IF FELT POSSIBLY THE SAME WAY I DID. ANYHOW...ENOUGH OF THAT STUFF...IT'S THE UGLY PAST I CHOOSE TO "NOT" REFLECT ANY FURTHER ON, IF YOU DONT MIND. My Hubby tried to get shore duty a month before we married, but it was denied. That's just the way life was back then. He'd joined also; to be aboard duty, in the same division with his older brother, who was in the Navy on a 6 year hitch...w/only 2 years left to go....when my Husband joined his Brother onboard in 1972. We were High School Sweethearts when we married in the USA. He sadly passed away September 2nd, 2012, on our 39th Wedding Anniversary to the day we married (Sept. 2nd 1973); to stage 4 Colon Cancer. I have been watching alot of bloggers & folks in the Phillipines, both once were native Americans...all moved to P.I.These folks have been nothing more than kind to me on utube. Now I am hearing about this place YOU blogged on your utube! I'd never of known to come visit your sight, had it not been for a kind couple from Mindinau, P.I. known as "Flywds" & "Rubylicious"...such kind, gentle souls theare! people are! I absolutely am SO HAPPY they sent me to your sight. I saw where your parents from Canada, came to stay 2 weeks with you. You're so lucky to have them in your life still with you my friend...and "they" such a sweet Son. I can see how proud they are of you. Anyhow...I just want to thank you for showing/teaching me what all you have shown & "MORE" lessons of life too. I wish I was younger still. I am open minded...but I feel as if I've just been "AWOKEN" to so much of life, from oddly enough...the age group of 30-45-ish! My only child; our Daughter is 46. Your age group I feel will be the one's who I pray 🙏🏻 will change the world for the better. WOW! Is it REALLY THIS WAY IN THE PHILIPPINES?! I have yet to see ONE MEAN-SPIRITED PERSON THERE! I'm not naive!I'm sure these types of people DO exist there...I've just yet to of seen one unkind person there as of yet! Its truely so beautiful to see too! Perhaps it's the blogger, or the utube folks who set strict guidelines...OR MAYBE ITS BOTH! Perhaps there "IS" nothing but kind souls living there?! I hope so! I think it would be ever so lovely, to know that there's a Peaceful, LOVING place as this...that truely exists! Thank you for sharing the Muslim portion of the Phillipines. I had NO IDEA there was such a place...just for the Muslims. I just figured that the Phillipines was a melting pot like the USA...all mixed together. We can't "ALL" seem to get along for some forsaken reason! I NEVER understood THIS WAS SO...EVER SINCE I WAS a little girl of 5 when I 1st saw this outcome. It hurt my soul, & broke ny heart...even at the tender age if 5...seeing folks treat one another so mean and so cruel. I knew this was NOT how I ever wanted to be perceived...or treated my Brothers & my Sisters from our Heavenly Father. It never mattered to me who, what, where, when or why religion one was...SO WHY CANT WE ALL JUST "❤️LOVE❤️" ONE ANOTHER?! ANYWAYS...THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH, FOR YOUR DEPICTION OF SUCH LOVELY , KIND FOLKS THERE IN THE PHILIPPINES! BTW; I'M "NOT" MAD. I TEND TO TEXT IN UPPER CASE LETTERS BECAUSE IT JUST SUITS ME TO TEXT IN CAPITOL LETTERS...THAT'S ALL! IT'S ALL FROM THE ❤️LOVE ❤️ IN MY HEART! THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, FOR YOUR SIGHT! (T/U "FLYWDS" FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THIS KIND , YOUNG MAN'S UTUBE CHANNEL. TOO!)

Kulas, you put to shame most us Filipinos who have not been to Muslim Mindanao due to prejudice and fear. What you did is show to the entire world that Mindanao is a safe place to travel, and that its stereotype has been busted. Ironically, it took a Canadian to do just that, a fitting redemption of the past. Long live Becoming Filipino!

Wow Kulas your such amazing guy Brave Heart to travel in Maguindanao, but like what the youngman said Maranawon are Friendly and safe to travel I hope and pray someday I can travel Maguindanao🙏Mindanao is such a Beautiful Place and hopefully the next Government will put lot of project in Mindanao for development of the Region so everybody will not be afraid to travel Mindanao❤️

Majority of the people in that area are indeed just like the ordinary Filipinos. So they are friendly and hospitable. The image of that area has been painted in a negative way because of the few extremists who are causing trouble in that part of Mindanao. If that area can be developed more, maybe the extremists will be gone. Hopefully.

Hi Kulas! We did a trip last March 2022, from Midsayap to Isabela de Basilan...we passed thru Parang-Lanao del Sur-Pagadian-Zamboanga Sibugay-Zambo City (AH26 highway). It was also my first time to explore that part of Mindanao and the longest road trip I've done so far. I can say, it's been a surreal experience. I'm so happy to see that part of Mindanao.... We stopped by Balabagan for the dudul and had coffee at Picong Tunnel. Hehehe. I'm smiling while watching this....I remember that epic trip. Ride safe.

That was very interesting and lots of nice places and nice people. The Halo Halo looked really good and the Dudul looks interesting and if I come across it when I am there I will have to try it. I think the colour and stickiness would probably put some people off but I like rice and I love coconut milk so I would try it for sure.

Allah in arabic means Moon God...Al akbar means the sun god...first time I've been Cotabato city when I took a PAF C-130 flight from Nicols Air Base in Pasay...1st stop was Tacloban...Army delivered cases of Armalite rifles...then in Iloilo 2 howitzer cannons were dropped off our final destination was Cagayan de oro there was a big storm runway was full of water ... plane almost crashed...so we landed near Cotabato city...pawang Airport?? Stayed in Aladin hotel...I was wearing a davao t-shirt and a guy approached me here in Cali name Nestor who he said his classmate was MILF leader Ibrahim Murad... my papa best friend Colonel Bueno MIG is from Parang, Maguindanao... Philippines Marine General Rodolfo Biazon visited our place in Davao...

Allah means God in English. Arab christian also used the word "Allah" to refer to as God. Al Akbar means The Great, Al = The Akbar = Great. Why r u bringing these up? It has nothing to do with the video.
