Philip II Of Spain - His Armada Defeated By Elisabeth I Of England

Philip II Of Spain - His Armada Defeated By Elisabeth I Of England : Philip II was born on 21 May 1527 in the Palacio de Pimentel, Valladolid and died on 13 September 1598 in El Escorial near Madrid. He was a Spanish monarch from the Habsburg dynasty.
As the only surviving legitimate son of Charles V, Philip ruled the lands of the Spanish crown after his father's abdication, and from 1580 he also ruled the Kingdom of Portugal in personal union.
Philip II was a devout Catholic and vehemently advocated the Counter-Reformation. He saw himself called upon to enforce Catholicism in the countries he ruled and to forcefully push back the increasingly strong Protestantism through the Spanish Inquisition. This led to ongoing military conflicts with the Netherlands and England, against which he unsuccessfully sent the Armada in 1588.
Philip had the monastic palace Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial built as a representative seat of power.
After a 42-year reign, Philip II died on 13 September 1598.

Charles V's brother succeeded him as Holy Roman Emperor (Ferdinand I) while his son Phillip became King of Spain. Charles had come to realize that it was too much for one person to be both as he had been (especially with the empire being wracked by the Protestant Reformation).

Considering most of the other Habsburgs, Phillip doesn't look inbred with the huge bottom lip, chin and jaw abnormalities that I see in other paintings of males of the Habsburg line. Phillip was a very interesting monarch, but in my humble opinion his father was even more so and not quite as brutal and overbearing with the whole Inquisition tragedy. Despite still having some faults he was just a better king than his son. I'd say Charles V and Phillip II were probably the most powerful and wealthy Monarchs for their time. It must have been insane to have the kind of power and control over so much of not only Europe, but Southeast Asia and the Americas as well. Especially when Charles V owned such huge swaths of Europe. He really deserves a video about his life for sure.

The Spanish Armada was never called "the invincible". Its real name was "La grande y felicísima armada" translated into English, "The big and very happy armada". Although "felicisima" in this context refers more to having a good end or fate rather than being happy in the sense of felicity

I always felt sorry for Mary Tudor. She fell in love with Philip, but he never reciprocated. At 38 and with the bad health she'd suffered all her life, she should have realized it was unlikely she'd bear children. Philip was unpopular, and she could have avoided alienating her people. I knew Philip had had a first wife but didn't realize he'd had two more after Mary -- he's almost as married as Henry VIII (at least he didn't kill any of his wives).

I love your videos! As I am currently studying this period, and Philip’s role in the political backdrop of early English exploration, I clicked on this instantly! My favourite videos of yours are on Louis XIV and his court as this is my main area of interest. I thought it worth pointing out that Philip II didn’t become Holy Roman Emperor after Charles V died, his brother did; Charles split the Habsburg domains between Philip and his brother Ferdinand before his death, as the combined territories were too large to effectively govern. Please continue with these videos, they are very useful and informative and you have the perfect voice for it!

An excellent account of Philip II's reign. It's interesting to imagine how different British history would have been had Mary I survived for longer and given birth to a son. England would have become Catholic, presumably with this being enforced by the Inquisition. Their son would eventually have been king of Spain, Portugal, England and what is now Belgium. The Union with Scotland would never have happened. North America would have been colonised by this 'triple power', with only the French and Dutch as rivals. Would the Netherlands have even survived without the support of a protestant England? Given that this Catholic King would have had the might of the Hapsburg armies under his command, would he or his son have won the English Civil War?

The inquisition was a tribunal implanted by the Spanish Crown, to judge the faith sins. 2 жыл бұрын

He already had a living heir from his previous marriage to María Manuela of Portugal, Don Carlos; who was to rule Spain and its American viceroyalties, African possessions and Asian colonies and has a claim to the Portuguese Empire too. The Spanish Habsburgs were the senior branch of the House of Habsburg and the King of Spain was the head of the House therefore, any children resulting from the marriage with Mary I, would be a secondary branch of the main branch meaning that an English Habsburg would still have precedence (dynastically speaking) over any Austrian Habsburg. Why is this important?: in the event that Philip and Mary had children and Don Carlos died before ruling and without issue, the heir to the English crown was forbade to rule over the Spanish Empire, only in England as per the marriage treaty signed between Philip and Mary so the second son in line would inherit the Spanish throne. This would have mean that the English Habsburgs would have become the senior branch of the house while the King of Spain would have retained his status as head of the House. The powers combined of Spain, England, Portugal (as Philip was going to anex it anyways just as he did) and Austria, would have created a power we have never seen, eventually Spain and England would merge as the Spanish constitution would have allowed such move and Spain was the main power back then and they would of have literally conquered the entire planet. If there was no second son but a woman, Spanish constitution allows women to rule so a Habsburg English Queen would have been sent to Spain to reign and married to an Austrian Habsburg to maintain the Habsburg house on the throne. The Habsburg dynastic rules would be maintained in any case meaning that marriages between Spanish, English and Austrian Habsburgs will be the norm until the ultimate goal of the dynasty: a single head, inheriting all the Habsburg possessions, uniting all the territories in a sigle personal union, just as Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire did.

Philip II was everyone's favorite villain. Seems like he was stirring up trouble all over the place. He could have been so much better if he wasnt so obsessed with religion. The 80 Years War could have been prevented if he just left the Dutch Calvinists alone and stopped trying to burn them at the stake.

Philip II was a devout Catholic? I mean he was an upstanding person that created an inclusive law code in the 1500s far before anyone else and always tried to do the right thing at the end of it (whatever it takes), and he would've been deified had he been a king of kings in Sumer, but he did have mistresses until he married Anna of Austria (his niece).
