Oh, man. You can tell his heart was still in the game, and will be forever, but his body just said no more. Thanks, Mike for all the great memories. You are the best there ever was at 3B. And a great man, too.

Mike Schmidt was one of those guys you rooted for no matter who your team was. Grew up a Cards fan but loved watching Schmidt hit.

I'm a Cardinals fan. I believe that what you saw from Mike Schmidt is the reason why Adam Wainwright won't gracefully walk away. I don't think that he wants to completely come undone, emotionally. I couldn't believe it when I saw this. This was probably the most human of retirement speeches that I've seen, especially being a then kid of nearly 16.

As a Braves fan he always scared me when he came up to bat, but as a young 3rd baseman he was a hero to me. I remember this retirement speech and watching him brought tears to my eyes. What a class guy and remarkable HOF’er.

I had just turned 16 a couple of weeks before this and a part of my boyhood disappeared that day...While Ron Cey was my favorite third baseman of that era I respected Mike Schmidt immensely as a ballplayer and human being

That was a future HOFer accepting that his time as a player ended. He did it with grace. It was hard, no question, but he opted to step out in midseason, instead of feeling like a burden to his team until the end of the season. A great among greats giving a lesson of humility and dignity. Michael Jack Schmidt.

Mike Schmidt the greatest third baseman to ever play the game. The Phillies were not my team but every time that Mike Smith came up to bat I I rooted for him either for a hit or a home run that's how good he was. When I saw this back then I cried with him. Thank you Mike for all the great memories you gave us. A true ball player that they don't make like him anymore. ♥️⚾🇺🇸

Tough watch. A man forced to say goodbye to the love of his life. No matter what level we reach, we all have to part ways with the game but it will always be with us. Played my last game at 18 and am 42 now and still miss it.

Our heroes are just human beings with God-given talent and the personal motivation to exploit that talent. A man that is overcome with emotion letting go of something he loves, is a good man.

unbelievable hitter, his numbers are huge, especially considering it was a relatively dead ball era. so consistent. the you top that with 10 gold gloves. maybe top 5 player all time.

He had the best hair in baseball...Also he opened the floodgates for player pay. In the late 70's, I remember he got a ONE million dollar a year contract...People, including me were ASTOUNDED....WOWZA, a million a year to play baseball....as Minnie Minosa once said, "basebull has been berry berry good to me"... Anyhoo, I started going to the batting cages hoping to be discovered....But, I believe I hit below the Mendoza line in high school, so I knew I needed to step it up. Long story short, now that things are wrapping up here and I'm getting ready to hit the dusty trail, I'm just hoping to end up in the Fork Lift Driver Hall of Fame....

He came to Puerto 🇵🇷 Rico to play for the Caguas Criollos during the 1972-73 winter ball season and it was a preview of the coming attractions, he was great .The following year he hit just .196 for the Phillies but smacked 18 HR and the rest is history, 1-derful all around HOF talent.

I’ll never forget when he retired here in SD. Before a game. We came home from the beach to check out the Padres and instead. The great 3B was retiring. Talk about a shock. We got the News 8 report.

That's how one feels when they retiire from doing what they love for a living! It takes a very long time to AQUIRE the graceful mechanics that made the legendary Mike Schmidt the powerhouse of a 3rd baseman that he was for the Philadelphia Phillies. 💔
