CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A gay law student asks Joe (Denzel Washington) out for a drink at a pharmacy.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the time of its release, Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia was the first big-budget Hollywood film to tackle the medical, political, and social issues of AIDS. Tom Hanks, in his first Academy Award-winning performance, plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at a stodgy Philadelphia law firm. The homosexual Andrew has contracted AIDS but fears informing his firm about the disease. The firm's senior partner, Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards), assigns Andrew a case involving their most important client. Andrew begins diligently working on the case, but soon the lesions associated with AIDS are visible on his face. Wheeler abruptly removes Andrew from the case and fires him from the firm. Andrew believes he has been fired because of his illness and plans to fight the firm in court. But because of the firm's reputation, no lawyer in Philadelphia will risk handling his case. In desperation, Andrew hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a black lawyer who advertises on television, mainly handling personal injury cases. Miller dislikes homosexuals but agrees to take the case for the money and exposure. As Miller prepares for the courtroom battle against one of the law firm's key litigators, Belinda Conine (Mary Steenburgen), Miller begins to realize the discrimination practiced against Andrew is no different from the discrimination Miller himself has to battle against. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas as Andrew's partner, Joanne Woodward as Andrew's mother, and Stephanie Roth as Joe's wife.

Denzel was robbed not to have been even nominated for an Oscar for this role. Hanks clearly has the most sympathetic part, but how about Supporting Oscar? It's Denzel's character that undergoes real psychological change in the course of the film and he portrays it wonderfully. Of course he finally got an Oscar for another film...
@hparas1

+bbbartolo total agreement with you. Denzel's most underlooked and BEST performance.
@machabeleloka318
7 жыл бұрын
bbbartolo Well, what about Tom Cruise and his performance in 1986's Rain Man, where he portrayed a selfish sleazebag car dealership salesperson, Charlie Babbitt, who is unawarely a brother to severely autistic Raymond, played by the legendary Dustin Hoffman. After Charlie's father had died and bequeathed his will money to Raymond instead of the former, and kidnaps his own disadvantaged brother just to get back at his late father and the manager of the institute that was looking after Raymond and is guarding the will money from anyone including Charlie, who is demanding a ransom from the manager, he underwent a metamorphosis of almost epic proportions from a disregardful, heartless man to an understanding, caring, and loving brother. I believe neither of us in Charlie's shoes would ever want to go on a journey with a handicapped person or anyone else we'd be uncomfortable with or burdened with a responsibility for the sick, injured, or less bright when we only want to care for ourselves in our own lives. It was hard transition for Charlie, even though it was worth it in the end, and Cruise really played that out quite well, even though Hoffman's ingenious performance as an autism-stricken guy is what really shines in the movie. But Hoffman's character really didn't evolve, it was Cruise, and therefore, Cruise had to have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Rain Man in 1986 (1987 in actuality). And maybe, just maybe, Cruise will have taken gold home, his first career-defining win, two (or three) years before his nomination for Best Actor in Born on the Fourth of July (he should've taken that win as well). Denzel is not the only actor to be snubbed for one of his evolutionary, career-defining roles so far down in his career (although I must say right now that even though Tom's performance was top notch, Liam Neeson should've gotten gold for Schindler's List) 🤗
@curtbarnes4294
7 жыл бұрын
TOTALLY agree about Cruise, but it took Michael Caine to mention his performance, a much tougher role than Dustin's. He said Cruise "just put the film on his back and carried it." It takes another (very fine) actor to appreciate the unsung work of their peers. Don't know about the nominating process for Oscars but it should be other actors who put up names; then the public might learn a little about the craft rather than get overly impressed with the flashy virtuoso roles.

Not necessarily. There are many men who have sex with men who don't consider themselves gay or bisexual. Gender identity and sexual orientation is more complex. English boarding schools, summer camps, prison and the nave see plenty of same sex activity. Any time you have single sex environments. Sometimes the business traveler enjoys something on the side. They might not see it as part of their sexual identity if they are giving but not receiving. Sometimes it is just a matter of power. Which is in control.

Denzel's performance in this movie was astounding. It was the glue that helped to make hanks performance which btw was brilliant. How was Denzel not nominated for an Oscar? Hank's and Washington's performances needed each other. They have amazing chemistry on screen. Definitely should do another movie together.
Oh yes the old make a scene and walk out with the items trick😲
Just watched this movie in full yesterday, tho I recall seeing this scene years ago on tv. I thought this was the best scene. Hanks did a good job, but I think Denzel had the winning performance in this. His character had the 180 arc (even tho his turn here was more of a 360, haha). Mary Steenbergen was excellent in the Marcia Clark role. She had the perfect appearance and mild, soft voice to portray a female lawyer advocating for a "Good Ol Boy" org. Completely believable that a firm like that would choose her for those attributes. A Roseanne Barr looking and sounding woman wouldn't do.

Admittedly the first Denzel Washington movie I’ve watched, but I’m just so fascinated by how incredible he is. In the movie he has such a humanistic quality and embellishes a man torn between internal intolerance and fear. There’s this subverted angst that’s around the film which is a good feature, especially for the flexibility Denzel has in his acting as is
This is actually my favorite scene in the entire film.

😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now now now Denzil. You need to pay for those Nappies bud.
5 year later, Denzel choked him out and broke his nose in He Got Game..
One of DZL's greatest performances, even better than Glory. - yeah I know he won one for Glory but who cares? Denzel doesn't need an oscar. The Oscars need him.
How did this movie not have two supporting actor Oscar’s.

As good as Denzel was in this film, I don’t think his performance was at the same level as Glory or Training Day
Brilliant acting by Washington. One of the greatest of all time.
That escalated quickly!!
Thought Denzel was gonna do a spinning heel kick or a spinning diaper smack. Van Damme would
MY MAN👍🏻
Another great scene.
Lady did the Homer Simpson back out🤣🤣
this seems more like the defendants trying to do some sort of entrapment
He's a eagles fan.
