Phil “Philzinho” Balmant earns his MGJJ Black Belt

Marcelo's first-ever Brown Belt was promoted to the rank of Black Belt on August 19th, 2015. Phil has been training for 13 years and continues to dedicate his life to jiu-jitsu. Beforehand, purple belt student, Jeff Holman, is awarded his Brown Belt. Afterward, Marcelo Garcia Dallas's Head Instructor/Owner, Rob Ables, is given his 3° stripe from Marcelo.

Congrats! Phil made me feel so welcome at MG academy when I visted a few months back when he was still brown. Well deserved.

i heard about the traditions in thailand being brutal... but i train a dutch variation of muay thai and combat kickboxing and to get stripes on our belt, we have to outstand a professional for 2-5 rounds (depending on experience).... beginner ranks usually focus on how you defend and handle pressure, and the more advanced ranks it is a full on full intensity spar... i get my ass kicked all the time lol
