PGA Tour... please bring back a show similar to this. The player pool is ridiculously deep to pick and match up from. Even if you didn’t get A list players you could have awesome matchups. Also, there are incredible golf courses out there to showcase and bring attention to. This show has to come back

Unfortunately I think the main part of the charm and appeal is the class and simplicity, very little advertising or promotional stuff going on, the crowds are smaller and more respectable and the whole thing is just toned down in general. Modern golf wouldn't suit this format at all unless it was done by a private enthusiast for a KZread channel, or something similar, as the focus needs to be on the passion for golf which modern day companies will ignore in favour of making a few extra pounds. I agree that if someone could capture the essence of this fantastic program it would be worth televising without a doubt, however, I think, in an effort to try to be "cool" or profitable the magic would be lost.

ABC’s Wide World of Sports (one of the few sports anthology series *more* famous than Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf) brought back the series in 1994, and it was later continued by the Comcast-owned Golf Channel in the late 90s and early 2000s. Golf Channel also reaired some of the ABC episodes from the mid 90s in the early 2000s, which they redid with their own graphics. This is an episode that wasn’t reaired later on the Golf Channel - or, if it was, then this is the unedited ABC copy, as it uses ABC’s graphics from the mid-1990s.

Phil's jabby putting was a trainwreck in this match, as it tends to be more often than not IMO. It's palpable how much of a struggle he was having that day, while Ernie just played his game and took what came to him. Oh, how the "Wonderful World of Golf" connotes so much pain and pleasure all wrapped up in one. Not so "wonderful" on this windy day. But great show, nonetheless! Love all of these episodes.

@W Jack You're right about club angles but what you're saying isn't valid at this stage of golf progression. The Iron angles were standardized in late 1990's and have stayed static since then. The significant changes date back to the 60s far before a tournament like this. 1995 9 iron is 41 degrees 2020 41, 5 iron also the same. It's partially about the club face surface and much more about club head speed training. If you see Daly hit the ball at this time or earlier his yardage will match today's distances. There is an exhibition match between Daly and Couples recently posted on this channel hes 2 clubs less on every shot and still out distancing Couples. he was an anomaly in swinging so fast but it has become the norm today. For every club higher you can hit, your angle of approach gets steeper and your odds of greens hit accurately goes up, forces the pros to train that way to beat the field. I would argue the single most impactful change to the sport to create this evolution is simple, Tiger, he proved this advantage wins tournaments.

That Rolex was a GMT Master II ref 16710 Coke bezel. That reference goes for around $10-20k today depending on condition. That specific watch, the actual one given to the winner, is probably worth more than the total prize pool of this match adjusting for inflation assuming it's providence can be demonstrated.

Ringing a bell on the golf course to let the group behind hit their tee shots, I thought Golf was supposed to be a quiet walk in the park interrupted by a little white ball. It can’t be quiet if your ringing a bell. Whoever thought that up, you need to remove it from the course. Use binoculars or a range finders. Have spotters to help with greens being cleared, then relay it to the tee box with radio, telephone or some message system, not a bell. They should be fired whoever thought of it.
