Phil Hill "Road America" Elkhart Lake 1955
George Tilp and 27 year old Phil Hill teamed up together to drive George's 750 Monza 0498M Ferrari #3 at "Road America" "The Inaugural race Sept. 11, 1955.
Briggs Cunningham's driver Sherwood Johnston in a long nose "D" type Jaguar battled Phil to a photo finish. First race is Paul O'Shea driving George Tilp's 300SL Gullwing to a class "D" victory.
Be sure to watch entire video, lots of history on drivers and cars. Enjoy

Thank you for posting. This race was 2 years before RA became my adopted home. I never missed a race from 1957 till 1969 when my first child was born. Not sure but our daughter may have had her beginning during 500 weekend Sept of 1971.
Great film and music!!! Thanks Tom
What a fantastic video. thanks so much for posting for all to see this rich history of racing. The old tracks are so cool. The lack of safety equipment and proximity of the corner workers just incredible. What a historical video and we miss all of these guys. Incredible amount of 300 SL gullwings starting that race. I used to see Phill hill at Pebble Beach. He lived in Santa Monica. What a gracious guy. Again thanks for posting, just fantastic piece of history.
Priceless archival footage and so well put together: thank you!
This is amazing! My father ran scca from 58 to the 70's and phil was his hero. Thank you for posting so much.
Thanks for your work in putting this film together. I raced SCCA (in the lower Production classes) in the 60s and 70s. I could never afford to run with the big dogs but knew some and was aware of most. There is a quick shot of a Bandini. The owner/driver of that car was in my local SCCA club. Nice trip down memory lane.

So glad you enjoyed my family video. Please share with other fellow enthusiast. Cheers Geoffrey
I love Road America, and to see this footage is spectacular not only for the very special cars but the track also looks brand new, a special place with a rich history, cheers to all the volunteers who make it happen ! Best Vintage Racing event in the world !
I would like to know where that transporter is today because it’s fascinating! Great film BTW a historic race film and should be digitized and preserved if it hasn’t already, true history!
I love the shot of the race parts sitting on the table as the sun pours in through the big windows at 5:06. It's so remarkable to see a glimpse of a race car shop from this era. Thank you so much for uploading this.
Outstanding. Having raced at Road America, seeing the changes made to the surrounding area is interesting. The track itself has not changed since it opened.

Yeah, fer sure! Took me a while to figure out some areas (which I thought was impossible!) -the space between Hurry Downs and Canada Corner, threw me. Phil drives into town for spare hardware and some new gloves, haha. Good Times!🏁

Wonderful film! Thank you.
Thanks for sharing. Its great to see this old footage of my all time favorite racing venue.
This is spectacular footage, and I can only guess that not many are aware of its posting so far if I am the first to comment. Thank you for making it public.
Amazing to see Elkart Lake before it grew into the Road America Course and Phil Hill before he went away to Europe to race for Ferrari and take the world championship.
Absolutely killer! RA is my 'home' track - my dad came from not far away on the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation, been here so many times (unfortunately not as a driver!) through the years... 12:30 - that's a shot of the brand new Ferrari 'transporter' shop and their own tent, a crazy extravagant concept in the days of "run what ya brung" for many - recently up for auction on Bring A Trailer, BTW. Good times!! 🏁
Amazing film..really great coverage of the whole event.
traks pennies from heaven .......super super great sound......amazing sinatra sound
Beautiful footage! No racing cars sound ,but love the period correct music.
this is priceless
8:24 it looks like he's dimpling the panel with an air hammer. Never seen that before. Great footage.
@Geoffrey Horton; Thank you!
Thank you.
I wonder how "race prepared" that Tbird was? great vintage film. thanks
Compare those facilities to those of today’s TV rich celebrity restorers’ vast spotless indoor works! Much as I admire Sinatra, I’m not sure the music fitted the footage though.

Agree. Instrumental is called for - although this cheesy Sinatra number kinda fits in a carefree sort of way. Killer footage, camera quality and condition of film is top-notch for a home movie of the era, though, bravo! 🏁
Some of the music was not written until years after 1955.
do you have footage or pictures from Nassau? my car raced road america and its owner raced gullwings and was also chairman of the RA race and on its board of directores. my car in this races was driven by carl Haus..

You can Google search my Uncle George Tilp. He raced Nassau with Paul OShea and a number of MB cars. Glad you enjoyed my family video. Geoffrey
why does this make me want to watch grand prix the movie?
I never saw a 2 door station wagon before. 10:40

Yeah, me neither now that you mention it. Maybe a Nomad. Looks great, fer sure, probably rare if any survived in good shape. I guess the idea is the adults get in through their own personal doors, while the kids climb into the bleachers over the tailgate. With an optional sliding soundproof glass privacy door behind the smoking section up front,
Who is the kid behind the wheel at 0:55 ?
JIM KIMBERLY... of the KIMBERLY CLARK PAPER COMPANY...
Glad you all enjoy the film footage. It does not get a lot of plays because of the 9 copyright from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. I kept the family film private until I had finished editing. Just took 10 years!! Please share the history! Geoffrey Horton
