He was amazing! I was on The All Alaskan which was a 425 ft ship that processed all their crab as soon as they had a load. We sold it as fast as we could, there were 6 crab boats that year that came to the ship during Snow Crab season. We had two big barbeques on the deck and in the snowy weather I asked Captain Tom if we could thank the crab boat crews by having a BBQ for them as soon as we arrived at the fishing grounds. They loved it! We had the usual cheeseburgers and hot dogs, chicken and steak and ribs with salad and potatoes. It was a surprise for them, all 6 boats were full of crab so we had some of our deckhands unload for them so they could eat in peace. We even had soft ice cream cones for them to enjoy. The next time I saw him was at the Tulalip Casino and I had become a card dealer after I got back. He used to sit on my blackjack table for hours after the heart attack. He was a class act for someone so well known...omg

Thanks for sharing. He was a good man. His heart was in the right place. You could tell that he felt terrible for not spending as much time with those boys during their adolescence. And of course the reason why....he was working on the boat. He was proud of his boys and im sure he was happy they spent time together on the boat. What father wouldn't want that!...but like everything, sometimes kids can break your heart as we all saw with that youngest son..anyway, happy trails to you and your family.

Dedicating this poem to Captain Phil Harris & the F/V the Cornelia Marie. I miss the twinkle of his blue eyes... The Bering Sea Poem I fished a place like no other place you’ll ever find on earth. A place where the hardwork and danger can and should reflect a man's worth. I fished a place where the hours were long, sleep rare, if at all. A place where even the strong sometimes stumble and fall. I fished a place where you spend countless hours, pulling countless pots. A place where the memory of her back home is thought in countless thoughts. I fished a place where the weather can turn bad in the blink of an eye. A place where those will get hurt and some will even die. I love this place and the pride that it’s given me. You see, very few people on the face of this earth can say, “I‘ve crab fished the Bering Sea.”

It was my great privilege to work for Mr Larry Hendricks owner of the "Sea Star" when I was a young punk kid on the road to find out... He somehow tolerated me and allowed me to learn what hard work was... He gave me the foundations of having a real Work ethic & never quitting no matter what... Thank you Larry forever more... please say hello to Loyd Nattersted if you see him around, & I Thank him & Earling for watching out for me... God bless all fishermen, they are hard to understand.... I knew Mr. Phil Harris & honor his memory also... He was always looking out for the younger guys, he really was... Love you Larry, Love you Phil.... &Thanks for everything... Krist Selmer Berg...
