Johnny makes it look so easy. He lets the guests just feel relaxed and lets them speak. No gimmicks, no fake BS, dumb jokes, politics or what have you! Hearing Phil and Johnny sounded natural. Like two people having a informal coffee somewhere, no pressure...informative yet entertaining.

That true because music now is so bad and they want you to attractive, young but not necessarily can sing which total opposite of these musicians nowadays if that is what you want to call them. That’s why a lot do people do not like Phil Collins because he is average looking and can actually sing and write and act . Just a threat to most people and they can’t stand it.

What is also missing is that by the time 1985 came around, Phil had been in Genesis for 15 years (joining with Steve Hackett in 1971). genesis were given the chance to develop, build a fan-base, mature and grow their audience. People ran labels back then who understood music, the industry and were actual fans of the music they produced and signed. Now, the business is so fragmented run by soda companies, lawyers and everything that ironically musicians initially rebelled against. Today, stars are seen first and heard second. TV shows turn karaoke performances into international stars. It's the antithesis of what music was originally meant to be.

Against All Odds is a song Phil adapted for a movie. It's a difficult song to sing anytime, and live on Carson's show. Daryl is like a security blanket. Nevertheless Mr. Collins adapted because he sang this emotional tune with control and feel. Daryl was right there, like he's always been.

Actually it wasn't adapted. He was approached by the director of the picture, Taylor Hackford, well before it was completed. He sat down with Phil and had him watch a very rough cut of the movie. Phil, who was on Tour, then proceeded to write the song when he had spare time. My source is the director commentary from the DVD.

@@chazrice4725 My understanding is that it was written around 1980 in the wake of his divorce and leading up to his first solo album. He ended up leaving it off the album, and when they asked him for a song for the movie, he dug that one out of the drawer. "Four songs Collins wrote during the Face Value sessions were ultimately omitted: "Misunderstanding" and "Please Don't Ask" which appeared in the Genesis album Duke, "How Can You Just Sit There" (which evolved into his 1984 single "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)"), and what would become "Don't Lose My Number",..." - Wikipedia

I remembered thinking that I would've done the same thing to be a guest on Johnny's "Tonight Show". This was maybe a Friday show in March or April of '85, just when "No Jacket Required" had made its way to the top of the charts That would be scary if I at least got the day right. I do know that he also sang "The Roof Is Leaking'' and Magic Johnson was also a guest...what a lucky crowd that night, seeing those 2 guys and Carson on that legendary NBC Burbank stage. Hard to believe it's nearly 30 years ago, when talk shows were truly talk shows. It would be great to see the whole thing if you have it, but thank you SO much for this upload.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favourite.

Carson was always sharp and could be somewhat cantankerous. I picked up on how he craftily pointed out that there was another performer on stage (guitar player)...obviously a soft shot at Phil for not acknowledging him after the performance. And then with the questions about him not looking like a typical star......and pointing out the subtle flaws in his voice during the performance. The thing about Johnny is he never pretended to like you. if you were boring it was straight to commercial. If he thought you were a big shot he could also bring you down a peg.

  • @spercoco

Considering what lol? Are you suggesting drummers can't sing? Actually the closest instrument to the drums is the human voice. They are both very physical like finger prints. I'm not sure what makes someone an "incredible" singer in your view. I'm not saying I don't like his voice; I'm just saying that he is not a gifted vocalist like Freddie Mercury, any of the singers for Deep Purple, Steve Perry and so many of the black soul singers. Neither was Peter Gabriel. I might personally prefer Genesis and like these guys voices but still know from a raw talent perspective that neither of them could sing for a choir for example just like the way I would prefer to hear Jagger singing with the Stones over Andre Bercelli but I realize one of the them is a real vocalist and the other an entertainer.

@@bellabunnell3174 On the contrary; you don't know drumming. And Phil himself has said he is a drummer first and foemost who happens to dabble in singing and song writing. Those are his words not mine. I've been a professional musician for for over 40 years and I do play and teach drums and this man is extraordinary in that capacity but as a singer he is not up there with the best; not even close.
