300V is the minimum generally accepted breakdown voltage for atmosphere. That means that below that, the wires have to touch. In practice it's much higher then that for any "real world" application, but 300V is the generally accepted line.

@soljaboy2006 It's a hotstick. It is a safety device, and yep, the tip is grounded and the rod is non conductive. This is so you don't have to get close/hold the wires to draw an arc, because if you do you might get an unpleasant surprise.

Hi. i've got two neon sign transformers. one is old heavy type with iron cover/box and the other is one of smaller newer types, both specifies are the same, they are 12kv and 30MA. is it possible phase them to get higher current? I've already seen some videos of phasing two, but in videos both type are exactly the same. Can I do a thing with my nsts?

They are built with dual windings for safety. Typically, each output wire goes to a different end of a long glass tube. There is almost zero chance that those will even get short circuited. However, there is a possibility that one of the terminals gets a short circuit to ground... either as a flash-over or by a human touch. With a centre tapped transformer, that means only 1/2 the voltage so (theoretically) much safer.

hello, I just bought one of those nst's for my tesla coil, but I do not know how to ground them... sorry, I shouldnt mess with it until I know how, where do I hook up the green ground wires, and where do I put them? thank you

Is the wire on the drum stick tied to anything (ground) ? if not, where is the wire tied to? Never phased transformers like this... it could be done with a D cell battery and a DMM or scope as well.

How can you "over volt" NSTs by putting them in series? Series circuits divide the voltage across each resistor. If you have 2 12kv NSTs in series that's 24kv across both, but still only 12kv across each.

I don't mix different ratings. If you're connecting transformers together (either in series or in parallel) you want them to all be matched. Strange, unpredictable, and very very bad things happen if you start mixing them.

I have questions i can not find the answers too...so i managed to go on a nst buying spree and i ended up with 4 all diff values lmao....7.5kv 9kv 12k. And 15kv...but i have a xhance to buy another 9kv but not 30ma like the rest...its 60ma my question is would this one at 60ma produce more hot and better arcs for a jacobs ladder...and do the ma or what do the ma assuiming mila amps do for arcs i. Ladders, tesla coils, ect...also all of my nst do not have the frankinstien plugs on them they just have the primary feed and ground ( some ) and the. 2 wires all have about 2 feet of wire coming out of the tar. So can i just connect the sires to say 2 closthes hangers to make a quick jac ladder....and pretty much those 2 wires just mean instead of having the easy frankinstien ears i have to just directly connect using gator clips or something ..that's my 2nd question...difference between the bolt connector design or if your nst just has 2 wires coming out of it like mine. Anythings i should know ? Any way to connect rhem to some device that would make it easier to connect and disconnect when not using these? The last question is on a capacitor i recently bidded and won a high voltage pulse cap...45kv pulse limit but only 500pf....the pf or uf,nf on the caps what dows that actually mean for me someone said 500pf might be to low for tesla coils and all with my soon to be 2 pkv phazed nst's...if you have time and can understand all my questions and rambling could you or anyone who reads this answer me at todd r Hart at gmail ( no spaces ) thabk you

I just use flybacks... The components for the driver, and the flyback cost me just $5... And I can generate 1.5 inch long arcs @ something like 10mA - 15mA... which is good enough. ZVS driver components will only cost a dollar or two and will generate currents equivalent to the NST at a much cheaper price. So... FBTs all the way!

  • @flaplaya

You do not over-volt a NST by series connecting the secondaries. No more voltage exists in each of the secondaries at any point. The problem arises with center taps making the cores live with 1/2 the sum voltage of secondaries between each other. I have connected (3) 15 kV secondaries in series with awesome results. Not arguing that technique is not for the novice. 30+ years HV experience here. Peace

We're getting into concepts like that in the new series. This is a very old video and only hit on some very basic topics. There's a much newer (and far more comprehensive series) that we've already started publishing. Check out the newer videos and I think you'll enjoy them. :) Thanks for watching and contributing to the discussion!
