I got into pharmacy school at West coast back in 2019, i dropped out after first semester, and honestly although i was bipolar at first, Now that ive jumped into software engineering, i can honestly say that Im really happy i didnt go through with it, i would still be in pharm school until may 2023, and have 200k debt, boy that would be fun wouldnt it?

@@KevinYeePharmD worked in the pharmacy for 4 years. As soon as the senior pharmacists heard I would be getting my intern pharmacist license, my hours got cut drastically. Even one of the pharmacists I worked with straight up told me to start looking to intern in other stores. Competition is unreal. Throwing your coworkers under the bus is a common thing with pharmacists just to get more hours from the DM (A$$ kissing). I'm not dropping out of school. I will use my prereqs to choose a different healthcare path, PA most likely.

Watching you, Kevin, and Brian made me decide to go back to get my masters in health informatics. I am working full time knocking down my loans while self teaching myself how to program. It may not be ideal but it's something to get out of this field lol

Thanks so much Paul, these videos have been so so so helpful to me whenever I regret giving up on pharmacy. It is truly disheartening that this prestigious and knowledgeable profession is not getting what it deserves anymore. This job market saturation issue has shattered many prospective students’ pharmacy dream, this happened to myself and another person I know. I am now on the tech career path. I do miss the interpersonal, meaningful, and humanitarian nature of the pharmacy profession but I am starting to get used to corporate. Just to bring in a different perspective from the other side, there are downsides in tech as well, lots of overtime hours in the evenings, not making significant impact as an individual contributor in a huge company, no humanitarian aspect, layoffs, competition among coworkers for bonuses and promotions (imo this can bring out the worst in people sometimes), work is not as meaningful as healthcare, no heart-warming moments, etc. The pharmacy job market has become such an issue that even if you don’t mention it, it has already become the truth. The pharmacy schools and boards should really hold a discussion about it or do something about it rather than hiding it from prospective students. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

same here! I dropped out of pharm school right before 2020, and now finishing up my bachelor's in computer science, this is my 2nd bachelor's but so what? The job market is much better than pharm, and i dont have to worry about paying back 200k loans! WOOHOO!

Thank you for your videos! I was pursing pharmacy until last year (2019) December. Now I switched to Nursing! A lot of differences within job and pay but I'm soo much more happier and stress-free! And now looking at the way 2020 has been so far, nurses are much needed! But to all the pharmacists out there, you guys aren't getting enough credit and appreciation, so thank you for all that you do!

People don’t realize this but nurses can be paid way more than pharmacists. If you look under public records you can see many nurses making 200-300k per year with overtime and seniority. Also there is so many opportunities in nursing. So many routes you can go.

Also look at Nurse anesthetist. This is probably the highest paid nursing job with shortest amount of schooling (non management)

This was VERY interesting. I'm a Hospitalist PA in Washington, D.C. I haven't heard this before. People ask me if the same will happen to the PA profession. Most things that inflate very quickly, eventually burst. I just subscribed to your channel.👋🏾👨🏾‍⚕️

I got in pharmacy school in January 2020 and had waited until last minute before semester started last week to drop out and admission team at school begged me to stay in program with a big scholarship. This is an excellent point Paul. I'm a financial planner and I married a pharmacist with a LOT of student debt. It was a struggle for my marriage. However, I did a lot of research and found a lot of resources on student loans and how to repay them. I was able to save us over $200k! So there are options for those with a lot of student debt. It is looking like politicians are abandoning the prospects of student debt cancellation. So, have a plan!

I was in pharmacy school but left for the pharma industry. I make as much as pharmacist without the debt. I've been helping a lot of science majors, nurses, pharmacists make the transitions and hope to post more on my channel on what I do. your channel definitely helped me get out sooner because I now I see all my friends unhappy with their pharmacist jobs if they were even able to find a full time position..most are floaters!

I totally agree with you Paul, “do pharmacy if you’re not worried about finances” - in order to get my first job in Retail in, i had to relocate, 200 miles away from LA. and 2 years after when a position open recently there was an enormous number of applicants, this career is clearly over saturated... and for new Grad the entry salary has actually gone done, so this is where we are now

Hey kevin, I’m in slo county, it was rough at first but I’m glad i dont have to deal with LA traffic lol, i was a foreign grad, which made harder to an early inter for chain pharmacies, not to mention that my chances of landing an internship at hospital setting was close to zero, anyhow thank god at least I have a job:) venture is pretty convenient not too far.

in East coast, people are saying they are receiving 35-45hr which is the lowest I've seen. They are firing older pharmacists who are experienced with desperate new hires..

The OP of a LinkedIn post was pleading for new grads to fight for their salary. But unfortunately that's hard when your new grad with 250k+ debt.

Kevin Yee I was lucky enough to land a hospital job in 2008 and stay x 12 years Position was union. Raises every year plus COA I honestly didn’t know how bad salaries had gotten.... until I lost job. No disciplinary...just making too much I guess. No way in hell am I gonna work for $40/hr!!! Had an intern who grew up in Hawaii. She told me last year that she knew of fellow islanders working for $20/hr and living with mom and dad JUST so they could practice at home in Hawaii!!! Can you believe??????????

I concur with you. I’m a non-traditional pharmacist and have given a lot of advises to grad interns how to explore alternative pharmacy option as a pharmacist.

As a pharmacy student in Canada, I am also worried about the saturation. But I had no idea that pharmacy schools in the US were that expensive. 300K in debt? Thats similar to medical school lmfao. Here in Canada my debt will be around 80-85K after I am done.

110%... anyone watching this Paul is NOT over exaggerating. Look at the pay decrease this past year in Ca where the pay has traditionally been the highest in the nation. We’re seeing wages at times in the $40’s -$50’s.. this down from mid to high $60’s.. Also, check out the current BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) report on Pharmacist job outlook.. first time ever I’m seeing negative job growth.. we as current pharmacists are NOT pessimistic we’re being real and trying to warn you guys not to make this mistake. There are other jobs out there that are very appealing and have a better job outlook and working conditions (which is a whole other topic we can go into). Anyways, thanks for reading

This makes me really sad, but thank you for this video. I have been advised that I shouldn't become a pharmacist because of the saturation and the fact like you said that pay is declining. I am thinking about becoming a physician's assistant instead.

Not to mention that non-traditional jobs are even more competitive than "regular" jobs like hospital or retail. Those who think they can "just get a non-traditional job if things don't work out" are extremely naive as to what their prospects actually are.

Paul is speaking the truth. Choose another profession. I graduated in 2018 and have only been able to obtain PRN jobs through a staffing agency- which is sporadic. Pharmacy is NOT a good options at this time. Take it from someone who is living it.

It’s so true! Pharmacist are lucky to come out making $50 an hour now! Also lucky to get 40 hours per week. However school is easily 250k including living expenses you’d have to take out. Try for residency yes but, those are extremely competitive to get. I know a lot of people too of my class including myself that didn’t get a residency spot. If you have parents to help foot the bill he’s do pharmacy. If not, no way.

I know a few new grads that didn't want to work retail after pharmacy so they waited out the market for months then tried to get anything and nothing was available. They wound up taking a job at a CRO making 55k/year as pharmds where their peers had life science degrees.

It's interesting that many CVS closed (lack of staff?). I feel like everywhere people are quitting because of the conditions and now it's understaffed. I didn't go to Pharmacy but someone said it's like they have to fill many prescriptions in addition do covid vaccines with almost no techs since they also left.

I am on the last semester of pharmacy school and I was very concerned with what he was saying until I remembered my country has universal education on all levels.

That's quite sad to hear but very true unfortunately. Though I come from a country where pharmacy is in high demand. Only 3 universities offer pharmacy and It gets worse cause my University only started offering pharmacy last year so our classes would have a maximum of 10 to 15 people. It's like this cause not many people are educate about pharmacy and also because many have been told how hard it is so some don't try 😂

Since you are already in, work on networking and paving your own path. It’s not the end of the world and there will be opportunities. You will have to work harder to get what you want. Start networking now in school with organizations, events, and LinkedIn

@Planet Hope You dont want to be an MD. They are being replaced with mid-level providers and machines. The debt time and is really not worth becauae Physician pay is declining. Physician Job Growth is on a decline BLS had Physician Job growth a few months ago at 7% now it is 4%.

What Paul is saying is fact. We have about 10000-11000 job openings annually. With 14000-15000 new graduates annually, there are insufficient employment for them. Only about 50% of those apply to pharmacy residency get matched. Many places, even the government one that trained 2/3 of the medical residents (if you know which one I am referring to), are cutting non-clinical pharmacy positions by not replacing staff pharmacists who have left. Clinical positions are reserved almost strictly for those with a PGY2 specialty residency credentials. So if you are a new graduate with no PGY1 or 2 experience or special professional connections, the chance to be employed as a "clinical" pharmacist in Amcare, for example, is fairly low. Staff pharmacists who are already in employment, on the other hand, face another challenge. It is called career stagnation because management often only hires the new PGY2 residents for any new positions. Management does not see any older staff pharmacists as worth developing. I am add my observations to Paul's comments. I second Paul's opinions.

Hi Paul! Very interesting video. I have to disagree on the non-traditional pharmacy careers especially pharma industry and contract research organizations (CRO). Although it is possible for a college grad (bachelors degree) to kick start their career in clinical science with a data entry job as a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) in a pharma company or a CRO, you will certainly hit a ceiling having a bachelors or even a masters degree. This is where a doctorate degree (PharmD) can boost your long term (5-10 years) career goals. Knowing a few PharmD in industry, they say that after working in industry for 3 years, they have been reached out by recruiters offering them pay raise and job promotions in other pharma companies.

Paul Tran Pharmacist: Thank you for addressing the facts. I am only pursuing the license for greater employment prospects as it opens doors for pharmacist positions. You cannot even apply to pharmacist positions without a license; it's just common sense. Also, this year, retail as an industry is only hiring pharmacists temporarily for the flu season, again, due to demand. I already know there are other "jobs" and "paths" that can be done with a PharmD that do not require a pharmacist license: teaching, research, medical writing, regulatory affairs, global marketing,...the list goes on. However, in order to be a pharmacist and perform the required duties in that state, a state license is required and is usually granted by the Department of Health of that respective state. Pro tip for people (a.k.a. suggested advice): do not respond to trolls. You will only feed their ego and waste your energy.

In Quebec it’s pretty good, there are only 2 school of 150 students each. 55$Can per hour, I never heard nobody not having job, it may be more hard to find full time jobs in the city. We are a bit more taxed, but there is free healthcare (it is slow but free). only pharmacists can be pharmacy owner. I don’t know about other provinces though.

But our Quebec schools are French. Usually one session is 1800$ For school for a Candian citizen which is less expensive than in US for sure. I end up with 40k of debt for 6 years of university. But like I said, Quebec decided to invest in school and healthcare, but we pay more taxes up to 40% for the 80k braket. The good thing about Quebec is that we don’t have to do a pharmacy Canada exam, but the other provinces have to. I know that Toronto is more saturated and students end up with 90k in debt with the same salary than in Quebec and the cost of living more high.

Kevin Yee I understand Paul’s point of view. I get that the market is pretty oversaturated and the debt you accumulate while in school may be difficult to keep up with. I think knowing that going into school and putting a plan in place to pay off debt is important. There are ways to save money and budget while you’re in school. There are a lot of different routes to take with pharmacy and I think specializing is important to differentiate yourself. I don’t think it’s a dead profession I just have a love and passion for the field so I am prone to defending it. I appreciate you both sharing your experiences and I think it’s important for future pharmacists to recognize the changes that are coming and learn how to mold themselves to stand out. Paul is right on all points. If you love the profession and have a plan in place to save then go for it. If not, consider other options.

job market is terrible, ROI on your investment sucks. only do it if you really love it and not for the money because in this generation, there are so many things that can make way more money than RPh

Just run away from pharmacy career for now everyone. It is very saturated and the working conditions are borderline slavery. If money is the main goal, you will need to go into investment. Either stocks, real-estate, or a business. No job will give you the financial freedom that we need to really be happy in life. Speaking of business, do not think about opening a pharmacy in the metropolitan area and be successful. Now that Amazon is in the pharmacy field, you will be replaced. You are better off opening a 'Pho' place than pharmacy haha. GLTA.

I was thinking about doing this as well.

No lies were told. Don’t know why people are hating (unless it would affect them financially, ie pharmacy schools). The market is over saturated. Fact. Newly licensed pharmacists and older unemployed pharmacists are having difficulty finding jobs. Fact. Some companies don’t value/respect pharmacists, like they used to, and simply place value on them for their ability to meet some ridiculous metrics, while understaffing support.

Kind of sad I only realize this after I graduated. The only way to save our profession is to get provider status and prescribing rights. Even with that we need more training and the pay will still be the same.

I honestly wish my pharmacy school GPA wasnt so low cuz I am considering of withdrawing and enrolling into dental achool or pa. Cuz the job market it sooo bad. Like I wish they had told use the truth about the profession. Like these schools are scammers.

I have been a Pharmacist 33 years - you are correct. The schools only care about taking people’s money because it’s a business like any other. There is also not a single pharmacy organization protecting the profession. There’s also the other problem of foreign graduates who go to school free in their own Country (ex Egypt, maybe India) and then come here to take our jobs.

American Companies hire cheap laber on Visa, For example CVS, walgreens and Retail hire cheap laber immigrants from overseas and flood the pharmacist market, like look at the guy that did the video, Asian Immigrant? American Companies have done this with Nursing, when there was shortage off nurses, we flooded market from Asia, and All American Nursing graduates by they time they graduate guess what happens no jobs we flooded the market.. This happened in Information Technology field, we flood the market with cheap laber.

The ones in retail suck wages are to low No rights to take a break since tbe gray area “ management “ means you don’t seat down you don’t take a break and you get pay salary but still cut you hours in pay but expecting you still show up for at 50 hours With With no help from technicians … you will be abuse and mistreated by the customer plus by upper management

Unemployed pharmacist here for 5 years now, no fun by any means. This degree is worthless, once you’re aged out or laid off in this market.

Every thing is failing in Malaysia. Even someone had the 4 years, thete is no good way to spend the 4 years. Even the perceived best Course, computer IT related, there is no good prospective in Malaysia..

We don’t only have Pharmd or bs in pharmacy We have masters in chemistry Biology degrees Business degrees But pharmacy pays better so we are over educated!! We would go into chemistry or whatever But they even don’t pay enough for our masters we have or business degrees or even teaching degrees Everyone thinks pharmacists just count pills and give shots and get as many prescriptions and metrics done for the stock holders for the chains

Nobody has done any hardcore investigating into why all these schools opened. NBOP had to give it the green light guys.

I should've known better. I found years after a graduated a youtube video of my instructor being for a position. If they not recruiting and you begging then this is the begining of then end of medicine. Pharmacist professional education, the biggest cin job, period!

Unless you know a family member or friend that can guarantee you a job after graduation, I highly suggest you get out before school starts. I just graduated and I have no idea what I’m gonna do after I’m licensed

You're confused because you're not a high-caliber student. Pharmacy schools have been accepting 85% of applicants so virtually everyone who has a pulse gets in. But since you're hearing this now, DROP OUT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOU CONTINUE GETTING SCAMMED

I appreciate you making the video which is at a significant risk to your career as a pharmacist IMO. I am a P2 now and decided to go into Pharmacy for a non traditionalist role. I know how much debt is involved and have played with the ROI, so I get where you are coming from. It's actually great advice but I never went into pharmacy for the job prospects, I went into it for the fulfillment of using a certain skillset WHILE making a nice salary. I worked a decent corporate job for 5 years before that so I didnt make a casual decision. Just wanted to let you see a different side to your argument. You and Kevin Yee being dissenting voices to the narrative the thirsty pharmacy schools are selling to high school and college kids is welcome.

He is a frustrated pharmacist...he doesnt make sense. Without God we are nothing. In pursuing anything allow God to be in your life so that in everything you will do, God will be with you. it is only in God that we will have prosperity and success

Why don't you enjoy your 6 figure income and not waste your time trying to scare would be pharmacists from becoming a pharmacist....

Me personally for my journey I was able to land jobs after graduation.. And also i am able to make good money as well.. With everything that is happening with student loans and interest on the freeze right now i think that it is very interesting times we are in.. Essentially with any profession you get into you have to make your own and seek out opportunities.. Pharmacy is saturated but i feel like alot of positions and non traditional paths are opening up, Definately more so than before... Just my thoughts. Good content as always 👍👍also there are affordable pharmacy schools out there.. You don't have to go to an expensive school

If you look at when Pharmacy School became popular was when the salary increased rapidly. Very few people would go into healthcare if the compensation was poor. Yes you want to help patients and help people but you also need to earn a decent wage for your own life. @@PaulTranPharmacist I understand all of that, but my thoughts are simple. If someone's main reason is to make a lot of money, then they should look elsewhere. That's been true for all health professions for a very long time. I'm personally trying to be a Pharmacist for my own benefit/satisfaction, helping patients is just a plus. Also even if 300,000 in debt, you should easily be able to pay that off while living a good life even if you're only making $80,000 a year. It's about are you ready to have a shitty lifestyle for 8-9 years (in library from 9 AM to 9 PM, not being able to go out most weekends, and living on credit) to do this? Its just not about money for me and it shouldn't be the driving factor for anyone for obvious reasons.

If you understand and are okay with it sure its fine but some are blindsided. I'll break down your simpleton personal finance scenario where you say its not a big deal. Okay so first 8-9 years you say will be shitty life in school okay..... now you graduate with 300k in debt @ 6% interest on a 10 year loan. Your monthly student loan bill will be $3,330.62/month. Your 80k salary take home pay in California after taxes = $4,734 (this is assuming your health insurance is free and you are NOT contributing to your retirement 401k). $4,734-$3,330.62 = $1403.38 left to spend on rent and expenses. So you are telling me you are living an amazing life with $1,403 to spend on living costs? So after 10 years you are 35-40 years old? When you are debt free and can start saving for retirement and a house, marriage, travel, and start having kids? How is this plausible? What about all that lost time in your younger years that you could have traveled and have many different experiences but you were locked down due to student loans? I urge you now to take on 300k in student loans and tell me how your life plays out in 20 years from now.

They are not bad,propably fantastic but in my country you will not have any priviliges with your pharmacy degree over others . it is more like opposite. It is career of cashier that you fall into after pharmacy, and it is for now becouse number of pharmacies is falling down with a great speed.

Why do you say more than once “do you want to spend another four years of your life...” when you’re potentially talking to a kid who’s 22? Someone that age is not the wisest, most seasoned of investors. Not even that skilled in the workforce either to be making 50+ grand a year right out of college. In our 20’s four years seems like for-EFFING-ever but really, it’s four years. In your 30’s you realize four years is nothing and they go by in the blink of an eye. But I guess all it comes down to is the mere fact that time is money and nothing else?

forget the damned 4 years. you'll have remorse for the rest of your life. if you feel your life is worth nothing, then break your ass studying every night and weekend for 4 years then you will get to wear that beautiful white jacket on weekdays, weekends and holidays.
