Phantom V12 high-speed camera teardown FAIL

Ғылым және технология

This was supposed to be a great teardown, but then, not so much. Still somewhat interesting.

    "No function testing was applied at this time as we don’t have the power adapter for this unit but it was pulled from a working environment." Working environment my ass!

    The colour and shape of that camera make it look like something designed in the 1950s.

    Fans actually change speed depending on the camera temp. Cameras keep track of two temps in the software: generically the camera and then the sensor temp.

    Not sure what US/Canada laws are like but where I live it is illegal to not accept returns for faulty or wrongfully described items. The eBay money back guarantee or PayPal chargebacks are also really useful for getting your money back. I have submitted several claims through eBay and have got my money back within a few hours for all of them.

    Huge congrats on the kickstarter, where should one be watching for updates on production? I'm definitely looking forward to more content creators getting their hands on cameras

    Generally ebay isn't bad (although here in Europe auctions are almost dead and ebay is a huge China outlet), but this one look almost like a scam. This was definitely NOT pulled out of a working environment as stated in the description. I'd demand a return for that.

    Actually base price new with no options the camera was greater than $70,000.

  • @AimedResearch

    @AimedResearch

    So that base price was just 8GB of memory. Max options were outfitted with 32GB of memory (huge at the time), CineMag compatibility, internal shutter (for automated/remote black reference), image-based auto trigger, and the Fast option to reach 1 million fps and about 290 nanosecond exposures (1 microsecond was the base). I know the price, but I don't feel comfortable posting it. It was certainly well over $100,000. That's not considering additional lens mounts or various accessories like CineStation/CineMag, extended service contracts, break-out boxes, O/I-IRIG-DAQ devices, hard cases, etc. At the time, about 2009, it was the fastest CMOS camera in the world.

    And all that was purely made in the USA whereas main competitors were/are mainly made in Japan, a few in Canada (you are not alone up there), and the UK. My input, if Trump gets his way with the import taxes, Vision Research will have the advantage as most competitors are manufactured elsewhere.

    Trump's policies have me concerned, yes. But seeing half the Kickstarter sales outside the USA was relieving. Canada's new free trade agreements with the EU should provide some offset if US sales don't go so well.

    Those connectors are the status quo in military aviation. Some are threaded and lock, some are just threaded, some are just a quarter twist lock.. Most are waterproof with removable pins. There are so many that are very similar. They are generally referred to as Cannon plugs. Most of them are made by Amphenol, some by ITT or Glenair. They... Are... Not... Cheap... lol

    I am guessing when they first released the camera, no one bought it until the prices dropped to the $1000-2000 range, then they may have sold a handful.

    Still managed to make an interesting video. To get back the $400 and then some... you could build a special edition Chronos 1.4 with an internal SSD drive and battery for someone with demanding case requirements. LCD screen placement would be a problem of course. Alternatively it can serve as a pretty good looking paper weight or send it to the will it crush channel and get a cut for it ;-)!

    can you avoid silent segments? I watch youtube videos at 2x speed to save time. Problem is that on some computer, e.g. my chromebook, silent segments cause massive when viewed at anything other than normal speed.
