In light of the famous Phantom Of The Opera (Broadway) closing, I thought I might upload this since it has been off of NFT for quite some time and can give an updated look to the production. In these sad times we need a little light right?
Anyway, if the master of this video would like me to take this down please just say so!

It’s fucking wild it wasn’t until the 2020s we got the first black Christines on Broadway and the West End. We had black Phantoms and other POC Christines but so long until a black actress was seen as able to play the ethereal treasured ingenue. This actress is so good!!

Well, Christine is supposed to be Swedish... I don't think that in 1880 there were so many black Swedish opera singers😊 Leroux designed is Christine on a real soprano of his time, Christina Niellson. A black Phantom is more credible being an "entity" of uncertain past... He could even be an alien! But this "unusual" Christine is very good. 😊

@@gloriabarberi1292 The Internet also said The Little Mermaid Live Action Disney version had to be a Danish redhead and rose up in anger at the idea of a black woman. The only story point that truly mattered, though, was her voice sounding great. Same goes for Christine. Nationality or skin color doesn't matter for her or any character in POTO. The plot doesn't call for it to matter any more than The Little Mermaid did. Their voices are what matter to the plot as their characters work for an opera theater. I love this Christine (don't know her name) and Halle Bailey in their respective roles.

I think Emilie's heavier, dramatic voice (I'd assume she's a young lirico-spinto) actually suits the role of Christine far better than any of the previous sopranos I've heard in the role. She sounds convincing as an opera singer and I also think she's easily the most beautiful Christine I've ever seen. They truly saved the best for last.

Emilie's one of the best Christine's I have ever seen. And I've seen many live onstage. I've seen this show over 15 times. Saw all three original U.S. national tours multiple times and the original Broadway production three times. I have never seen a Christine more focused than Emilie. Every second of the show she is immersed in the character and her natural reactions to what's happening around her are a welcomed element of her portrayal something most Chrintine's miss. And I love her strong and sometimes even delicate voice! I've long accepted that you can't really discern most soprano's lyrics when listening to them live and oftentimes even on recordings because the very nature of their sound calls for weird enunciations and requires the throat to constrict in unique ways to achieve that operatic sound but Emilie was so clear while maintaining that very beautiful and POWERFUL classic soprano sound. I never really had a favorite Christine because much of the portrayals are too similar but I always say my first ever live onstage Christine--Dale Kristien--to be my favorite. Emilie is not far behind. She's fantastic!

Now I MUST say a word on this STUNNING video record of this musical...I cannot stress just how AMAZING this bootleg is. Just when you thought the smartphone would be the best way to capture a show, this unique bootleg comes along to show you how it should be done. I'm guessing this is some innovative method created by the person filming it? It's obviously not your standard recording done by someone holding a smartphone. The way the camera pans and zooms in is different and seems to be done via remote control or some other method. Also, the camera remains mostly stationary. If it was someone holding a smartphone it would be all over the place. This is the most stable bootleg I've ever seen. I just wonder how this was done because it appears it's a method that hasn't been used before by others. The standard smartphone method always makes me cringe because you just know the entire performance was spoiled for some unlucky theatre patrons who had the misfortune of sitting behind the bootlegger and watching two versions of the show; one on an annoyingly bright smartphone screen and live onstage.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else ever witnessed a mishap with the chandelier? I did. I will never forget it and to this day I wonder what kept the show going because I kept waiting for everything to stop due to what happened during the overture. It was with the show's 3rd national tour (aka: Music Box Company) at Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa, California. It was the show's first engagement at that theatre in 1994. My sis and I were seated about 12 rows from the stage. The overture began and the chandelier began to rise and right as it completely lifted off the stage, there was a sudden downward jolt. Like it went down a step and I could've sworn I saw beads from the bottom falling off. However, after careful jogging of my memory, I've come to the conclusion no beads fell off and what happened was the bottom beads simply hit the stage when it made that sudden downward jolt. It was sudden and rapid enough that the beads struck the stage deck with an audible clanging noise and I think that gave the impression beads got loose and fell to the stage. I did not see loose beads during Hannibal but I was convinced beads fell off and I kept watching it throughout the show, expecting more beads to fall to the audience. It sort of ruined the overture for me because I was worried about falling beads! I think the rest of the audience thought it was part of the rise, for it to stutter and be unstable as an added thrill. I had seen the show 3 times before at the Ahmanson Theatre in L.A. and knew that wasn't supposed to happen. We were teenagers at the time and my older brother who was a teacher at the time was complaining the entire way to the show because he was tired from a long day's work and had to drive us all the way to Orange County which was pretty far from our home in East L.A. He sat in a single seat 5 rows from the stage but to the extreme left and was in such a bad mood, lol. He had seen the show before so he wasn't exactly needing to see it. When the mishap happened, he said at intermission, "I was hoping the show would be canceled. I just want to go home and go to sleep but you guys dragged me all the way over here to see a cheap knock off tour of the production in L.A." That got on my nerves because I was so impressed with how perfectly it replicated the L.A. production and here he was saying it was a cheap scaled-down tour, lol. He was right about one thing, the cast was mediocre and gave oddly amateurish, cheesy performances. I still enjoyed it though. Theatre in those days was absolute magic to me. Still is but nothing beats experiencing it when you're young and opening your eyes to the world.

This Christine and Raoul are cute together, but I dont understand why a lot of the actors sing All I Ask of You with such force behind their voices, especially at the beginning of the song… I wish they’d do it more like Barton and Brightman did: very smooth and soft, almost like a lullaby at times. And Barton and Brightman did it that way live too, so I don’t think it’s a matter of needing to project more.

Not taking anything away from anyone but you do know that the entire title song is lip-synched in every production, right? So it is perfect every night. Not sure what the rationale for having that one number lip-synched. I know the orchestra is playing live during that song. The only other part of the show that is prerecorded is the first half of the overture, then the orchestra kicks in live after the chandelier has reached the top. I've always wanted to see the title number sung live because it would be breathtaking to hear Christine actually hit that high note live but alas, that has always been prerecorded.

Caine was there along with a few other cast members... and she was asked if it was difficult to hit that note at the end of the "title" song... @@KNPrince Oh, I have no doubt that Rebecca Caine can hit those notes with ease. Never said she couldn't. The same with every Christine. It may be prerecorded but that is still them hitting those notes on the recording. Like I said, I'm not sure what the rationale is for having that one number prerecorded. It seems you thought I was saying no actress who has played Christine has sung those notes live so therefore they can't do them at all. Not at all. Just meant to point out it isn't done live during the live performances. I may even be wrong about that as I recall reading somewhere that some actresses from some of the European productions did do that title song live including the high notes but I'm not sure where I read that or if it was true.

@@rickramos1292I think it’s honestly an issue of the director always wanting for that E6 note at the top to have a glass shattering and mysterious echo-quality at the end, and once you get the extreme upper and/or lower ends of your vocal range, it gets really difficult to incorporate natural vibrato. It could be that some of these Christines had never done any sort of classical training beforehand, so it’s hard on their voice. However, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a terrible Christine before, so I think it’s more that the director wants for that E6 to be sold to the audience as this beautifully glass shattering echo across the stage. Yes, most classically trained sopranos can technically hit notes up to at least an F6. I turned 28 a few months ago, I’m a light lyric coloratura soprano, I’ve been getting classically trained to sing opera and musical theater in private lessons since I was 15, and I can get up to an A#6/Bb6 in warm ups. I’ve learned arias where I was required to hit E6s and F#6s. I sang the Queen Of the Night’s first aria “O, Zittre Nicht,” and I added them on in Una Voce Poco Fa. Even for classically trained sopranos with a wide range and strong coloratura technique, once we get above a D#6/Eb6, those notes are usually 2-3 second bumps at the top in our range or staccato notes that make the audience go “Oh, neat, they can do that with their voice!” It’s very rare for even sopranos to be able to sustain notes above a D#6/Eb6 for long. When you look at the vocal score for the Phantom of the Opera theme song, you’ll see that the high E6 at the end is a dotted whole note in 6/4 time signature. That means it gets 6 beats, but 6 beats in 6/4 time at an Allegro-Vivace pace means that it should really only be a 2-3 second hold on that E6. However, because Phantom of the Opera is supppsed to be sung throughout the vast, wide, and mysterious underground caverns of the Opera Populaire, directors want it to have this mysterious echo quality that goes on for longer than that.

@@Schoolgirl325 Are high notes something that is developed over time? I know that both sopranos and tenors have to learn how to produce that classic operatic sound which requires learning techniques that shape the way they open their throats and mouths which I think I read somewhere can be quite difficult to get right. I always thought opera singers just naturally had that sound but apparently it is all learned. The only thing they have that is natural is the ability to project and of course ability to sing. Correct me if I'm wrong. You know more about that than me.

I'm pretty sure an Erik/Phantom actor injured his back from carrying Christine night after night, so it was changed to Christine falling to the floor.

I have never seen the live production, only listened to the soundtrack. I imagined that during the title song, Christine would be singing those high notes, and the Phantom would be on the side playing his little ditty on the organ while shouting SING MY ANGEL OF MUSIC. That's how this should have been staged tbh.

Christine's voice is all over the place. It's a beautiful, strong voice but so pitchy. Not a fan.

I like it honestly! It gives a different hair style to what it usually is, id love it if some other productions would give her a different hair style then just down 24/7

Seriously the idea of the Two Faced mask for Erik/The Phantom is actually stupid when they're using the "Born deformed" version. His entire face it's supposed to be concealed, that's literally part of what makes him The Phantom. This two-faced mask makes him look like just somebody who fought in a war or got moderately burned in a fire and can still live among the rest of society.
