The pace of play was much different back then. The game was so much slower so players were able to preserve their stamina throughout a game better. The talent level and athleticism also wasn’t close to what it is now so MJ stood out even more. Not saying that diminishes his ability defensively cuz he’d still be incredible today, just saying it was easier for him to average 35 and dominate defensively.

I wanna share an eye opening experience. I use to play park ball for hours after an 8hr work day (construction) I use to run hard all game for 3 out of the 4 hours I played every weekday. I joined a league and because people couldn’t make the game I became the primary defender and ran the point for 36 or 38 of the 40 minutes. I felt I had stamina and was going hard all game, after the game I felt good but… The next day? I felt like crap, I walked like Jimmy butler in the finals for the whole day. My legs were so weak/dead from the day before. Everything i did was slow and I walked like a grandpa all day. The pain lasted for 3 days, the fact that nba players play 32-38 min a night and are ready for a game the next day or the day after is insane. I can’t imagine players who play 40+ a night on occasions

It’s sad that “two-way” player has become a widely used term. Growing up in the 90s, everybody was expected to be a good defender or at least show 100% effort defensively. Now it’s like some special thing when players play both ends. So now the norm is that, as long as you’re really good offensively, you can be less than mediocre or even a full out liability defensively. It’s sad where the league has come in that regard

I think Kevin Durant and Nikola Jokic are rather underrated as defenders. KD is great at weakside rim protection, and at his physical prime guarded all the great wings from LeBron to Melo to Kobe. Jokic has great hands and timing for steals and deflections, is always in position, and somehow can protect the paint without ever fouling much. Oh, and both can average 28 ppg on 50/40/90.

Defense is WILDLY underrated in NBA circles. From fans.. but up to commentators and PLENTY of people with NBA Awards votes.. people don't even *understand* NBA defense, let alone value it. Defense is literally 50% of the game but all people focus on is offense. And not even OFFENSE really.. they just focus on scoring. Because real shit Draymond Green is also one of the best 2-way players of ALL TIME really.. but since he doesn't score well, people don't value him for what he's really worth either. 2 way players win more chips. And stars who arent 2 way always need 2 way players as costars (curry, magic johnson, dirk, etc) and if you have two offensive minded stars and no great defenders around them, they wont win any rings. Ask dame and CJ and luka and kyrie or derozan and kyle lowry. Non 2 way players become liabilities that hurt their team and have to score godly numbers to compensate for their lack of defense. Curry wins zero rings if klay isnt a great defender. Curry would be getting abused with no relief, no one to cover for him. All his 3s would only keep the warriors close in games but not win em chips cause no matter how good of a scorer you are, youre gunna have a few off nights. But if you can lock up your opposition a bad shooting night wont hurt as much

Bruce bowen has 8 all nba defensive selections straight. Jordan made 9 while being a leading scorer for all of those 9 as well as having Dpoy. Gary payton has 9. Kobe has 9 first team 3 2nd team. Tim duncan has 12 as well. KG has 12 with a DPOY. Giannis himself has 5 selections with a DPOY at the age of 28 and was snubbed this year. Literally too much other great two way players who were consistently 2 way players for almost a decade to take a 5 year stretch of lebron being the best SF defender.

I respect 2 way players and as a fan you love the effort in those moments but you can be 2 way and have a defensive game plan that gives you some plays with less effort. Basketball like all sports is about the math. If I bust my ass holding you to 2-7 in a quarter but I go 2-7 and lack energy on offense, that ball could have gone to someone else on some of those plays. At the end of the day your team needs to outscore the other and the best way is to get open looks and draw fouls. I would much rather have an open shot from my 4th option than a contested one from my 1st. This is why some teams win in big spots and others hope Trae gets calls or you have no shot.

Imo offense is more important than defense. I understand that you need both to win but offense takes skill and IQ which comes from practice. Anyone can play defense if they give effort and effort is something that you can do automatically. I take a kid, noob, or someone who isn't physically gifted on my team yet I'm pretty sure they give effort and play defense much better than offense. In addition, you can hide bad defenders with team defense while it's rare to find a solution to hide offensive liabilities

You have to be a otherworldly offensive player + a cultural phenomenon to be considered a top 10 player of all time and not be an elite defensive player. Like curry and magic everyone else in the top 10-15 is a elite two way player in their prime.

As a mavs fan that Luka Shìt bs everyone should play defense to the best of they abilities (I can understand switching for a few plays to get you energy back) Here is some reasons ways he had help He played with Brunson who can facilitate and get his own shots Dennis smith was decent but when Luka got drafted they started some ba Last year when kp was on the team he’d be wide open for a 3 and Luka would hold the ball and not pass Tim hardaway can create his own shots Christian wood could create his own shots Now we have jaden hardy and Kyrie that can Spencer dinwiddie can get his own shot and create a little Had Kemba for a few games but didn’t keep him Trey Burke was able to get his own shot
