At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

As a owner of multiple 205 GTI’s I reckon you pretty much nailed this review. Bad ones can be pretty bad (you certainly found one), and cost an arm and a leg + many tears to fix when they go wrong, but a good one on a twisty road is life-affirming. There’s a reason people put a lot of time and money into fixing them up until they’re better than when they left the factory. Should you buy one? Probably not, but would I sell mine? Nope, not a chance, I’d sell almost everything I own first. You either get it, or you don’t.

I was fortunate, I got my drivers licence, just before the Peugeot 205 GTi was released in Australia. I can still remember demo driving a silver GTi. Simply didn't have the funds, it was a very expensive 4-cly super-mini hatch in Australia. I later drove a Hatchback of Notredame (1.6 Si, had pretty much the original GTi 1.6. less a few kilowatts when it arrived in AU, it was fuel injected! And had power steering! An option deleted in AU with the First 1.9 GTi's ), I nearly bought it. it test drove so well! Still never picked a 205 up. I remember opening up the Australian Peugeot 1991 205 Brochure (no internet or youtube back then! Even car mags had bugger all pics in them back then), as I eagerly flipped the pages of the brochure, and seeing for the very first time a Miami Blue GTi with the 15 inch alloys. To this day, I have never seen a better looking sporty Hatchback, and never WANTED a car more than that exact model. We never got the tasty 309GTi in AU. I have seen so many new release sporty hatchbacks over the years now....that 1991 Miami Blue GTi..well it was perfect wasn't it!!!!!!

Hertz Sydney used to have a few for hire so used to cane it whenever I hired one. Absolutely loved it ,,the throttle response was near instant ,, the suspension absorbed potholes with its huge for the day tyres. It was so agile and had a sense of urgency. It was the polar opposite of the high revving Japanese hatches and didn't need to change gears constantly with plenty of torque down low. And designed by Pinanfarina into a classic ....maybe a it could be considered the French retort to the first Mini Cooper. Brilliant driving machine with character plus

Once the interior has been put back together properly there won't be many rattles. The Peugeot museum in France has started to remake the original parts for the 205 GTI. Here in the UK we have a company called BakerBM that makes a lot of reproduction parts which are excellent quality at a lower cost.

I bought one new in 1989 and owned it for 6 years and bought another about 10 years ago. Fantastic cars. I knew within 50m of the test drive I would buy it as it was so responsive and fun due to the torque, if not super fast from a standing start. Handling was superb and the lift off oversteer is way overblown (only has 75 kw for phase 1 and 1.5 cars). Yes build quality was not up to Japanese standards but if serviced regularly they were fine. They do rattle but the car you drove was obviously a really poor example and needs a lot of love. Never had a problem with electrics or the lack power steer (more things that are overblown). The pre phase 2 cars had shorter gearing and are a hoot to drive . Like any car, buy a well maintained car and it should not be a drama if you service it regularly.

Great review! I had a normal 205GR 1.4 in New Zealand and loved it, but even relatively new, it suffered from electrical gremlins. I drove several GTIs and the unassisted steering on the wider rims lacks the delicacy of the smaller variants. I believe the rare fitment of PS and aircon requires a different shaped bonnet (at least for RHD) which could make a replacement more difficult to source. BTW the storage compartment at the bottom of the console should definitely open wider than that - probably can’t due to all the loose plastic pieces. On the posher models like the GTI, there is also a compartment in the triangular plastic piece above the console air vents. The lid flips up to reveal a shallow compartment for holding coins.

100th Like! The Peugeot 205/GTi was the singular Peugeot model that saved the Peugeot Company. And the very reason you can still buy Peugeot cars today. So that alone cements the 205 into Automobile History. But is it a good thing or a bad thing that Peugeot are still making cars today? (They never got close to another 205 GTi), a very good question. They were never great cars to run and own, especially in Australia......maybe France you could keep one going forever Lol! (Exact same deal with Citroens and Renaults!!) Adam another well researched and presented video! I didn't notice any glaring omission, and I'm somewhat of a Peugeophile! All I can think to mention, though not applicable to any AU version of the 1.9 GTi. Is that the first ever released 205 GTi the 1.6 in Europe, in 1984, weighed exactly 1,984 pounds!!

I had a new 1.9 GTi in 91 as my work car - i was a country vet. My clients thought it was a Barina because of the lion!! Great car to drive - did 150k in 3 years , only really annoying issued was creaking door latches from body flex. I bought another in 2010 and 'restored' it - electrics and head gasket - before giving it away! originally bought for my daughter, but lack of safety scared me off! I now have a 306GTi6 as my 'toy' - much better car - a grown up 205GTi!

Wow, where did you find that little nugget, what a cool little thing these are. Many years ago, when I was a young bloke and thought I was the best driver in the world, I was an active member of the Renault Car Club and doing the occasional motorkhana or track day and thought that made me Dick Johnson, not Brad Johnson. Anyway, these things were appearing in Used Car lots by the mid 90s and so I went and pretended to be in the market for one and took one for a test drive. I remember the salesman directing me down this road with a tight right handed at the bottom, almost a U turn, with an uphill exit, we were behind a old Pulsar and he asked me to drop back, let the Pulsar get some distance on us and that would allow me to carry a little more speed into the turn. I did just that, went right out, just about put the left wheels into the gutter, turned in and as I did it’s like the chassis was alive and talking to me, I got a touch of under steer and lifted my right foot, the back came around a little, I grabbed second and planted it on the exit running wide again and I was ginning like the Cheshire Cat. What a car! I still have never owned one but I’m back in another classic 75 Renault 12 (few and far between) and back in the Renault Car Club. Keep the videos coming AK, love them.

Even non GTi Peugeots of this era were famous back in the day for their combination of great handling and ride quality. Also the turbo diesel variants were fast but refined. It is difficult for drivers today to appreciate how superior in these areas to other manufacturers Peugeot were back in the 80s. Unfortunately the build quality wasn't the best and once cars became heavier and more solid Peugeot lost their mojo.

I desperately wanted a 205gti for my first car a good decade ago. My old man who is admittedly a Peugeot fanboy himself, wisely talked me out of it. However, I still feel I need to scratch that itch...

I’d buy the 405 Mi16. Twice the luxury at half the price. Feels more solid and still excellent drivers car

lets be frank about it, if you are buying a French car in Aus you'll have to do it with a passion rather than logic. i am a proud owner of 2 French cars and my daily is a Mazda3 that says the lot, the 20 yrs old 206 that i still own from new had almost everything changed, mind you the newish engine gearbox does come with its own baggage too. So is it worth it? if you love the car then go for it, again it is a passion thing, but buying one as a daily, you will have to be prepared for rattling, weird noise you will discover along the way, but the driving experience will put a smile on your face on some bendy B roads,

The 1,9 version ended quite some lives of young men. If driven too fast around curves, they rear ended against a tree. The 1,6 was more forgiven. The 205 was one of the first small cars that sat 4 people comfortably. Most GTIs will have been trashed to death. They had a harsh life.

Great looking car but typical French quality… when we first moved east dad got a Renault and let’s say that inspired him to go Japanese for his next car 😂. And the review had me laughing so much, great one guys

The electrics in French cars has always been shit, its not because the car is old, they were shit when the car was new too lol . And things haven't really changed these days either with French cars and their electrical faults .

Years ago in the uk, I had a 405 diesel with 525,000 miles (over 800,000 kilometres) and all cabin electrics worked! Car into a bitch to start and dangerous brakes, but all windows and electric sunroof still worked fine lol
