Peugeot 106 Clutch Change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to replace the clutch on a Peugeot 106 with the 1.1 TU Engine.
(Although other engines in the range should be similar, as well as the saxo and other cars using the same engine/gearbox such as the 206 and c3)
My Grandparents drive this car and they get through clutches very quickly their previous car had a new clutch put in it every year owing to their driving styles my grandma can't hear so she never knows when to change gear and rests her foot on the clutch all the time and my grandpa has the car in the highest gear possible it usually is in 5th gear before it has reached the end of the driveway. They need an automatic car instead.
Its an easy enough clutch to change, the worst bits are getting the gearbox back in, and lining up the wishbones to go back into the hubs, the release bearing is also a bit tricky to keep in place while refitting the gearbox its very easy to hit the release arm on the gearbox while moving it into place and knock the bearing out of place.
In all the clutch kit cost £49 and the two bottles of oil cost £15 so its not an overly expensive job to do.

    +dcfrommaxi Thanks for the comment, glad to hear someone still has a GTi on the roads brilliant cars. The gearbox is a bit of bugger to get back on, dont know does the release bearing click into place on the 1.6? On the 1.1 here it had a habbit of falling off which made it trickier, and not doing the job on a lift just made it a real ackward pain.

    +peugeotCitroen2CV Its a great little car and was well worth the work. The release bearing clipped on to the fork but it still fell off a couple of times whilst wrestling with the gearbox so i tied a bungee cord on to the clutch arm to stop it moving too much. I have no lift myself but used a engine crane to hold the gearbox up while i manhandled it on. Tricky but i'm very happy with the result. Cheers again man.

    I changed the clutch on a 1.1 206 recently. There is an easier way to get those ball joints on and off; get a long L shaped lever, tie a chain around the wishbone arm with the lever slotted through, then pivot it off the engine or sub-frame. Pops right out and makes it easy to put back in again. I actually used an engine hoist support beam as a lever, but I think you can buy a lever specifically for the job. Also, I didn't bother removing the driver-side driveshaft (mainly out of laziness) but I was able to get the box back on with a bit of wiggling.

    Yesterday i finished the job. I can not figure out why, but it was really troublesome fitting the gearbox back in place, even though the clutch was perfectly centered. The other hard part was unmounting the lower arms/wishbones from the hubs. The amount of force needed was insane. Everything else went really smoothly, thanks in large part to your great video, so thanks again!

    When I did mine with my brother, we took off the thrust bearing arm and made sure it was de rusted with a brush etc and greased , so the clutch operation was ultimately silky smooth. Also helps to wire brush the spline shaft too. Oh and if your doing this job just replace the gear box linkages while your at it, saves hassle as they come off anyway while your doing this job, unless they've been done recent, they only cost about £20 for a really decent set and will make gear changing more new car feely!! :)

I don't think it needs to come out. I would advise buying a haynes manual for the C2 and look at the section detailing the gearbox removal. Same goes for the gearbox, not 100% sure but it should be round the differential or side of it, it will look different to the other bolts, usually you can see the copper washer and indented shape for the sump plug key.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV

    It took quite a bit of time and lots of expletives, basically i had to lie on the floor and push the gearbox up to the engine level then across into place. Heavy for sure, it was quite difficult, though someone with stronger arms may find it a doddle. I got someone to stand above the car with a rope to hold the gearbox at the right height while i pushed it towards the engine. Which made it slightly easier. Its why with the subaru forester and 406 clutches, which i did after this i opted to change them on the lift and use a transmission jack.

    Thanks for this. Potentially looking to do a gearbox change on my 1.1 mk2. I pulled away from a stop and as soon as I hit second gear the car stalled. It started back up again but I noticed it was making clunking/rattling sounds (almost like major engine bearings had gone). Can't remember whether I had the clutch pedal pressed in or not sadly. It still seems to make a nasty noise when the clutch pedal isn't pressed in but it goes away when pressed in. I know for a fact when I accelerate at low RPMs there's a nasty but subtle grinding noise coming from the engine/gearbox area. That noise either goes away at higher RPMs or is not noticeable due to engine noise. Is it worth just driving it until the gearbox dies or will it give out completely and leave me stranded? Any ideas whether or not this sounds like it might be the engine itself? It started back up straight away after it and that knocking/rattling sound seems to have gone now. Pleeeease cheap little Peugeot just last me sixxxxx months.

    peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for the reply mate. Just hope it's not the engine bearings. It was loud for a minute or so after I started the car back up after it stalling, but I haven't noticed the noise as badly since then. Drove it 50 miles or so today and it didn't stall but the engine itself still seems to make a rattly noise between 2000-4000rpm. Sounds like more than just lifters. I bought it fairly recently for a good price but the service history is pretty poor. Gave it a good service following your video as soon as I got it (thanks for that btw). Zlyzer The TU engines are fairly strong they seem to take abuse fairly well, head gaskets can fail but its one of the easier cars to change a head gasket on. Nice video. Question though - if the clutch cable was to be "wrongly" adjusted, meaning the clutch would engage a bit higher, that would in worst case eat up the clutch disc earlier. It shouldn't do any harm to the release bearing should it ? I've started to hear a rattle when the clutch is disengaged (released) but stops when i engage it. I think that also the cable is not correctly adjusted and that's why the clutch engages a bit higher (meaning the clutch pedal). The clutch was done about 30k km ago.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV

    +Kaktus Jack If it was too tight then it would have the same effect of "riding the clutch" ie keeping your foot rested down on the pedal, it could cause the release bearing to wear out quicker, and slippage quicker as the clutch might not be able to fully engage. On the other hand if it was too loose then you have to press down much further to get it to engage.

    Hello, great video. Yesterday my Peugeot 106 from '94 had the same problem. I heard a grinding sound the last days. Yesterday i just couldn't put in any gear anymore..... and there was smoke..... I think the clutch broke down. What do you think? I am not a car mechanic, but i am not too stupid with technics. Do you think i could exchange the clutch by myself with the help of your video? It really is a great video. And there is another question. I heard that switching gears early is a good think, because it safes fuel. Is it wrong? Does that mean that you damage your clutch?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV

    @peugeotCitroen2CV

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi there Grinding is a serious problem, the clutch can go bad without any grinding the car just gradually looses drive as the clutch plate wears down. Although grinding may occur if the clutch is unable to disengage meaning the gearbox is essentially trying to get into gear without the clutch pressed down. If its grinding when the car is driving and in gear however then consider the possibility that a new gearbox may be required. However yes this is definitely a job that could be attempted DIY, provided you have the tools. Changing up early to save fuel, its how taxi drivers would drive, put the car into 5th gear as soon as possible and let it lug on. It can cause the clutch to wear faster. Its more suited to diesels where the torque is available at lower revs. On a TU petrol 106 if you are driving it properly it should be bouncing off the rev limiter before a gearchange haha.

  • @SozusagenStan

    @SozusagenStan

    @@peugeotCitroen2CV Wow thank you for the very detailed answer! I will try to find a solution, because the tools are a actually a problem. The grinding was only hearable, when a gear was in. For example if the first gear was in you could clearly hear the grinding. That is of course understandable, because the engine is not very loud. But as soon as i put in the first gear and released the clutch, the grinding sound disappeared.... Don't know what that exactly means, but i don't think, that the clutch was unable to disengage. SO maybe the gearbox is ok?! But unfortunatelly i really have a tool and space problem to solve this issue..... I will see, if i can find anyone, who is willing to help me with this, because i really don't want to loose the car. And i really think it is very nice of you, that you take the effort to answer on a video which is 4 years old. Thank you very much!

    Hi tony I think there is a bit of adjustment at the gearbox end for the clutch cable but that will basically just adjust the bite point. Perhaps the clutch fork arm or pedal pivots need lubricated, its been a while since i have drove a 106 but from memory the clutch was never too heavy or hard to use on them a hydraulic clutch is obviously more comfortable to use but the cable one in the 106 never seemed bad. My biggest gripe i can remember with the 106 was the pedals were small and close together wearing boots opened the possibility of hitting two pedals at once.

    I have never worked on one. However the nemo has a DV4 diesel it is completely different from the TU era of engines the 106 had. Im sure there would be a vague similarity in both jobs you would approach them in the same way although i doubt many parts have carried over between these two vehicles. There should be guides out there, it is a fairly basic looking wee van so hopefully they are easy enough to change the clutch on.

    What a great video. It really prepared me to replace the clutch on my 106. Thank you for the great job making this video. I also have a question. I need a clutch alignment tool.. I hate the universal ones and i'm looking for the dimensions of the rigid tool you use in this video. I can make this simple device on a lathe and safe me some money. Would be great if you or someone else could help me out. Regards, Gabriel.

    Hi Gabriel The clutch alignment set I got was one of those 17 piece ones that have ends that slide and screw into place. I bought it thinking the same way if ever it needed to be modified it wouldn't be hard to have extra bits made in a lathe. Unfortunately, i didn't measure the clutch plate on this car and can't now it is back together, but I do remember it was one of the bits in the box which worked with the car.

    Hello buddy, Thank you very much for the quick reply. I seen these sets and after your anwser I think this is the way to go. I see them here in Holland for about €20 so that is not bad at all.. Thanks again. I will send you a message when I got the job done. Cheers man. :)

    I would recommend a haynes manual as a reference for the torque figures, however this source seems to have all the important torque figures listed: www.106maxi.co.uk/mediapool/78/788866/data/106_Torque_Settings.pdf

    Can you tell me is that hydraulic clutch or is it mechanical cable clutch?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV

    @peugeotCitroen2CV

    Danko393 Its a mechanical cable clutch on this 1.1 car, the larger engined variants such as the 1.6 GTI may have a hydraulic clutch

    How about 1.5 diesel?

    Danko393 I cant remember, i had one years ago, great running car, very economical, the head gasket was the only trouble it had and after that was sorted it kept on driving. Im not sure if it was a cable operated clutch, the handiest way to check is to take the air filter box out of the way, look at the gearbox and see what is controlling the clutch arm on the gearbox. Im almost certain it was a cable, but its worth checking.

    Great video! My question here is that I have a sound when clutch pedal is off and when I press it the sound stops ,like a whirling sound.. my clutch cable is manually adjustable but I tried all the positions, first gear is engaging with difficulties at starting position, also when engine is off there is no problem in engaging the first gear.. what could be the problem? release bearing? thanks!

    That would be the release bearing causing the noise.

    Don`t ever leave anything on the top of the battery like that ratchet and bar quite easily short but otherwise great job.

    Still doing it all the time haha, gives the ratchets a nice patina... One of those things i know i shouldn't do but its a bad habit, hard to resist that handy flat surface for setting stuff on. Perhaps i should train myself to set a rag over the battery first.

    Between 13:50 - 14:50 shows the installation of the new parts which reviewing the footage i would still say appears fairly clearly, and the majority of the comments would concur with that.
