Hi Don, I would extend the riser so you will have more hot brass feeding the mold. Something that's hard to do is anytime you have a bad pour don't continue trying to fix the issues you will find yourself wasting a lot of time. It's best to cut it up and start over the sooner the better. I know its disappointing when it don't go as planned , we all have the same results sometimes. But keep after it you will secede with the perfect casting.

Hi Don. I think you would get a better casting if you spent more time cleaning the brass before you melt it such as disassemble the fittings and take off the tape and any non brass bits inside. Also I think you need a riser and raised pouring hole like myfordboy uses

Hi Rodney, i was kind of thinking that a long riser may keep more impurities from going into the casting after seeing the results. I have even seen them using long risers on other types of casting that extend past the the top of the mold by a few inches. Also appreciate the thoughts about cleaning up the brass as well. Thanks for the feedback sir. Cheers!

    # 2 was a lot more successful eh. The biggest thing I saw was the position you were in while you were pouring. With raising everything up it will allow you a lot more control. That initial splash most likely took sand from the sprue hole into the pour. All in all brass is sure beauty all polished up.

@@DonBrandt Hey bud. I have never tried it but how about the lost foam way for the riser ? It is interesting to see you progress as it is a whole different way of pouring than what I do. Luck to you bud.

great video Don, what was the total burn time? You might consider multiple risers that would allow the brass to enter several places at once keeping the temp more even.

Hi Myron, When i did my test casts.. i had problems with the temperature, The torch was not hot enough. After adding the hot water, as mentioned in the video.. It might have been 30 min or less. Thanks for the great question. Cheers!

I have no idea why I watched this but I did. Just curious. Wasn't that wheel good enough to be used as is? My mother who would be over 100 now if she was still alive had a Singer. It was in a table. You flipped over one side and that became a table top then the machine was upside down and rotated into position. Had Frankenstein foot pedals. This thing could take a direct mortar blast. In fact, it survived the buzz bombs exploding around my mom in England. A small piece was broken or something. Don't remember. We took it to the Singer store. That was a big place back in the late 60's and 70's. Everyone freaked out when they saw it. They gave my mother a top of the line new sewing machine, table, chair and tons and tons of everything in the store in exchange for it. They were going to refurbish it and sell it to someone who needed a heavy duty machine like a leather glove maker or something.

Here's a tip... Don. Don't screw with brass. Cast sil bronze instead. It's a perfect gentleman and works pretty much 100% of the time. If a repair is required, you can actually weld it with TIG, easy peasey. Chirpy does a lot of brass work and he's good at it. Personally I hate the nasty shit. Your hand wheel came out good for your first try. You could try to braze the repair work with safety-silv 45, but that's a pain in the ass.
