Hello Issy. I was a child of the 1970s and totally agree with you. We used to go out at 9am and be out all day with no worries. TV watch much better back then and folk were more frienflier. X

Always has me in buckets this song as it brings memories of much happy and simpler times when life was slower and people had time for one another. It was given alot of airtime back then and I can still visualise my late parents singing along to it.

Takes me back to when I am 12 years old and my Mam used to sing this to my Dad who had been working away all week in the days of no mobile phones and we didn't have a house phone then.Both are no longer in this world and this song brings so many memories back of me enjoying the seventies,my Dad grafting away and lovely Saturday mornings catching up with a bacon sarnie and my Mam washing all my dads clothes . . great days.

Some facts about Lennie and Dianne that some of you may not know: 1. Lennie Peters was blinded in one eye aged 5 during a car accident, and the other at 16 when a brick was thrown at him. 2. Peters was the uncle of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. 3. The singing duo’s original name was Lennie Peters and Melody. 4. Their first performance was supporting Rolf Harris. 5. They were the first act after the Beatles to simultaneously chart a single and an LP at number one in England. 6. Peters’ daughter Lisa was murdered in a caravan park in 2005, while on holiday with her three young sons. 7. Peters died of bone cancer in 1992, at the age of 60. 8. He had links with East End gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray, who encouraged his career. Another brother, Charlie Kray, attended his funeral. 9. Peters appeared briefly as a crime boss in the 1984 film The Hit. 10. Dianne Lee married Wizzard bass player Rick Price, and they still tour together as a duo. 11. The duo’s best-known hit Welcome Home was used to advertise Walkers Crisps in 1995.

Those are really interesting little and not so little anecdotes . How do you know so much about them and do you have any links to any of them in particular the story of his daughter being murdered? They have certainly had more than their fair share of misfortune, the guy getting blinded in one eye and then another years later is almost unbelievable and just beyond bad luck

The other week we finally decided to place my dogs ashes on my late grandad's grave where we also scattered my granny and uncle and when we got back in the car to drive home this is the song that was playing on the radio. My mum and I cried the whole way home, such a beautiful song

Takes me right back to the early '70's when I was a kid. Songs like this are very evocative but the effect is not just nostalgic. There really was a warmth there which has utterly vanished from this cynical, cold modern world and we suffer because of it. And you realise from a humble little pop song like this. You weep without knowing it.

❤🙏🏻Thank you for posting this! 😢I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to find it. My dad was an entertainer/musician and was on the road traveling most of my childhood. My mom had this record and I always knew the words, but I was very young when it came out. As I grew older I realized what the words were saying and why she loved the song 🥹. She is 94 now and almost ready to go to her heavenly home, so I plan to play this at her funeral- it’s my Daddy’s turn to welcome her home and they will forever be together 🥲💗

Ahh the days when there was only one tv in the house, and we all use to sit around watching as a family. Although only 3 channels at the time, there was more quality on tv with just those 3 channels than the 100 we get now. The music had more meaning, and you could hear real instruments being played ( unlike the computerised crap today). Yes the 70's and 80's were memorable periods, where live was simple and happier with the little we had.

I was just going to say that! I reviewed all the UK #1 hits (1952-present), and this got 8/10 from me. There are some good songs now, but the scum in the toilet bowl is what usually gets to number one. (I was born in 1999. 2006 was the only good year this millennium (2000 was in the 20th century).) As for TV and films? I'm not sure, but definitely not as good as in the past.

You didn’t live in the 70s/80s. You have no idea what culture and society actually was like because you didn’t live in it. If I had a choice between a 70s and growing up today, I would absolutely choose the 70s: -Economy was better -There was less violence -Education was better -There were not as many drugs addicts on the streets like today -Music, movies, etc. was 100 times better compared to today. (I still have a Linn Sondek record player and listen to vinyl records). There were 4 or 5 TV channels, which was plenty. Life was simpler in the 70s. London (where I live) was less crowded, not multicultural. It was easier to afford a house, there was less traffic. Things were far less commercialized and less oriented toward spendy “luxury” experiences that regular people cannot afford. The 90's began, and life became digital....... P.S. I wish that the internet was never invented, it ruined society

Thanks for serving. I have a slightly different take on this song as it was released not long after I was blown sky high by an I.R.A. bomb, as a 4-yr-old, standing holding my mother's hand as we waited on my father coming out of the office on a Saturday lunchtime. They played their usual sick joke of telling the R.U.C. in a coded phone call that it was planted at the opposite end of the street, so they always got the highest casualties that way (as police hurried us towards the explosion). I live with C.P.T.S.D. & lost many friends & family members in civilian police & "special" forces units over the years. When my husband & I bought a house in Southern California, we opened our home to marines, "Top Gun" pilots & sailors who were homesick & loved being in a family atmosphere. They also got to break the rules for new recruits as we allowed them to use our phone for long calls home. We often had around 20 for dinner :-). The other thing they loved was volleyball & barbeques on the beaches. They called me "Mrs. B." & I was a LOT younger than most of them, loved them like family &, sadly some never came home after the Gulf War. God Bless & keep your head low (now I'm sliding into another '70's pop song :-) ).

We had a simple childhood not obsessed with technology and phone addicted . Playing in the parks with jumpers as goal posts for hours . The cinema was a real treat . It was idyllic in some ways but not perfect by any means .

Love this song. I heard it in 1978 when my sister brought a cassette tape of Peters & Lee from the UK. Loved it ever since. Brings back ton of memories. I am 57 now.

Totally agree with you. I was 10 when this song came out and I believe we lived through the very BEST time for music. We had Pop, Glam Rock Rock Punk etc etc. I am just glad that I was a child in the 1970s.😀

if the record companies weren't so greedy, they could be still selling vinyl and cd's. they alwasy gave us bad value for money, i felt.# i mean, 5 or 6 songs on each side of an expensive LP. NO WONDER k-tel scooped top prize for giving us 10 or 12 tracks on each side. still, the cd's are better !!

I was a dj at a ( small )night club on south coast england when this song was a hit ,they were booked to be the main act one night .What a great loverly couple ,Sung their songs and had all the time in the world afterwards to have a drink and chat to me and " fans " couple of The Bee Gees and a few other famous people at the time were in the club as well to just be in audience and see them .Sat drinking and talking till very late , never forget it .Brilliant

Can't beat these songs, I still listen to my yesteryears music and drift away to my glorious days of our lives.

This was playing on the radio when my Mum returned home from hospital after giving birth to me. It's always held a special place in my heart.

Takes me back to a time when I was a boy in Wales with my family. My grandparents and my dad was still alive. The golden age of TV and film as well. Films like Star wars, Grease , and the Carry on films. Great TV like Morecambe and Wise, 3 2 1 and Doctor Who (Tom Baker) on a Saturday night. Now those days are sadly gone, just like my dad and grandparents. The music is just so terrible now and TV, the dreadful X factor. Today's films are no better with violence and swearing. It really was so much better then than it is now. I'm still happy though I'm now nearly 50, still got my mam and my own family, but I refuse to listen to today's trash and watch the rubbish that's on TV these days. Very little to look forward to on TV these days.

I couldn't agree more with you... Wish we could go back to those carefree days with great music and great TV.. Because it certainly beats the rubbish we have today.... People were nicer to each other as well I do believe...

Andrew Dexter I don’t have an aerial connection in my room & don’t miss tv that much. What I want to watch is accessible my other means. In the 80s I watched so much, because there was something to watch. Now there isn’t!

i was ten when this was broadcast on christmas day 1973, am seeing it in colour for the first time.

2024 and still listening as it brings back great memories of a wonderful childhood. Simpler times but better times.

A wonderful song by two really gifted singers. Thank goodness for the likes of Peters and Lee.

God, I just love to go back to the 1970`s and have the chance again to relive those great times and of course those great songs like this one I can`t stop playing it!! Thank You Mr Lennie Peters and not forgetting Daine Lee too.

Best decade ever and as the world worsens it will get better and better and rightly so -just so grateful I was young In these times .

This British Folk & Pop Duo Certainly cashed in on their Opportunity Knocks Success with a No1 Single & Album!, R.I.P. Lennie Peters!.

What a classic song - sung by 2 lovely people!! Definetly takes you back to better times!!!

blueange1s Absolutely right Blue...and we're so fortunate to have lived through that era. Music was warm and good-natured and inspiring. I wonder where this modern trash is leading the youth of today!

So underated..Saw them in Margate in the 70s several times.Bought the house down each time. Music and recordings that are timeless. Dianne was and still is....GORGEOUS!!!!

Reminds of my Dad's parties at home. Listening to my uncle's and Dad's friends sing these songs was a childhood memory. As I grew older I started singing these songs at parties.

I remember Peters and Lee from the 70s my Mum god rest her sole used to love them and this was one of her fav songs nice to here it again words are lovely brings back happy memories for me as a child .
