Peterbilt 359 Restoration Ep.9

#littlebylittle359 #twinsticks #twinstickgarage
Just a good ol' boy born and raised in Alberta, Canada, I’m the proud owner of this 1979 Peterbilt 359 rescued after it was left for dead in a farmer’s field.
Originally used for hauling heavy equipment in the Alberta oil fields, my Pete later ended up pulling a gravel belly dump b-train until it was eventually “retired” to haul the occasional hay bale load for local farmers before being parked in a field near the owner’s home near Mundare.
In the late 90’s I learned the art of trucking from my cousin driving an almost identical 359. I went on to become a mechanical engineer working for a large international corporation but all the while never losing my love for classic trucks and always had my sights set on a twin stick 359.
After placing an ad on Kijiji looking for one, I was contacted almost immediately by the owner of a Pete with a 6x4 Spicer who was very surprised that anyone would want a two-stick transmission. I went out to see the truck that weekend and ended up buying it “as is/where is” (see Season 1 episode 1). I ended up mounting new tires and wheels on the front and had it towed home.
Powered by a Caterpillar 3406A, it has a deep reduction plus Spicer 6x4 double overdrive transmission. The tractor is all original but unfortunately suffered from generations of mice growing up in the interior while it was idle.
I’m currently in the process of restoring this Pete and plan to use it primarily for personal use when finished. I’m looking forward to driving it to shows or the lake with my 5th wheel camper in tow.
I’m not planning a “full classic resto,” but rather a “make it as nice as possible” and as close to original as I can. Planned upgrades include a drop visor, 8-inch straight pipe miter stacks w/pickett elbows, new Bostrom low rider seats, upgraded sleeper, new interior, Texas Blade front bumper, chrome air cleaners, polished tanks and wheels, lots of lights, train horns, classic dual round headlights, and a new paint job in Peterbilt Sovereign Blue with Seminole stripes.
My backyard DIY outdoor restoration of this classic truck in the sun, rain, snow and wind is currently being fully V-logged on KZread … checkout “359Twinsticks” to see them all / @twinstix

Hello! I'm from Russia! And I'm 24 y.o. I like the American classics. I used to love only cars. But lately, I also like trucks, American old trucks. Peterbilt 79' looks just fine! When you see it, you feel like you are immersed in the atmosphere of the 80's! In old cars the soul feels, in modern machines there is no such sensation! In general, I congratulate on the acquisition of such beauty! I wish successes in this interesting project! I hope the restoration of this huge truck will be given to you relatively easily and without any problems! I look forward to new videos! Good luck, buddy!

Seeing as this was a really nice build, I decided to go back and watch the series again, when one watches it an episode at a time, it’s very hard to take on board just how hard it was for you to buckle down every Saturday for 2 years in rain or shine, Kudos and much respect, 😃👍

And same as the k100 you have. Do you know anything about why some are yellow and some are white? Maybe a different plant they were built at?? Unfortunately this project will have to be piecemeal over a few years as I lack the time and funds to do it all at once ... more of a backyard resto but it will be all refreshed eventually

How much have you put into it so far? Love these old Petes, eying one in the sawmills yard and want a guestimate for budget. Thx!

Ellery Collins take what you think you’re gonna spend and triple it 😆 I’ll probably be into it for over 60 by the time I get it where I’m happy with it ... assuming the motor doesn’t need major work 🤞

Was it a construction or tow vehicle? Maybe that is why it has beacons.

Ben Harleman sure I’ll try and capture some of the work in the next vid and I haven’t started it since last year as I had to fix the oil leak on the air compressor and figure out the new air cleaners 1st ... she should be running again soon

Can you take the top cap off the old sleeper and put it on the new one to retain the logo?

wally twixter I’ve thought about it and if I don’t sell the sleeper I probably will as it’s too cool to not have on a truck

Hey if you see this comment what are you restoring the truck for? Is it going to be a working vehicle or something more like a show vehicle?

I’m fixing up this old truck because I learned how to drive on one just like it and always wanted one of my own. Was planning to use it as a toy but with how much it’s costing I may have to put her back to work

Why take the original sleeper off? They're only original once.
