Maybe something to consider would be an oil centrifuge. I have the spinner 2 on my 3406B engine with over 2 million miles. You wouldn't believe how much that centrifuge catches. Also I agree using Cat filters everywhere on that engine. They have put tons of research and design into them. Great videos as always, thanks.

I don't have a cat, but hell yea I'd drain that oil sump. * Note to viewers: wire brush your drain plug and the area around it, also use a damn near spotless drain pan, reason: if any metal frags fall out of the drain plugs, you can sift in the drain pan and find the metal and easily identify what it may be, bearing, ring, gasket material? Great work, not many KZread Mech. are aiming for precision and provide step by step maintenance. ...thanks EzRider

I wish mechanical shops took the same mechanical principles and ethical attitude that you use with equipment. The shop who rebuilt your out of frame CAT engine looks to have done a very nice job. Unfortunately you had to spend the amount that you did, but that's part of the way it goes. They appear you have done a great job not like other shops who charge astronomical dollars and don't care about the work they did. Basic math that presents you're running a $5.00 a mile cost rebuild and every mile you make it comes down. Napa had great oil filters. There are great KZreadrs who outshine mechanical shops. Shout out to yourself. Marc at twinsticks. Peterbilt Mike and others who do great videos

Wix makes the Napa filter. Only difference is the 5 in the part number. I’ve heard that wix makes the filter media for Cat. The ones I’ve seen cut apart I would have to agree. I’ve run Napa filters and the less expensive “house” (Rural King/TSC) oil for years with out issues. I picked up a load of John Deere oil once. There was a I can’t remember store brand there both appeared to be coming from the same tank.

I would keep it around for a shop heater but I don’t have a shop. I get my oil for about $12 a gallon, $50 for Fleetguard filters and a tube of grease. Man your good on that filter people love cat fuel filters because they have less microns which equals less restriction. Most of your aftermarket filter manufacturers are not gonna be less than what cat filters on Microns due to the fact of Lawsuits. We ran Cat fuel and Baldwin oil for years on our cat’s never had a problem. Baldwin will filter more. Believe it or not you will see a slight Oil pressure difference between the 2 depending on how good your gauge is. We do our services on the 10’s easy to remember that way. We all know how to count be 10.

The lower the micron number the smaller the the particals it can catch. Meaning the smaller the holes the oil has to pass threw so more restriction. Although some of restriction can be offset in the filter design.

We use fleetguard filters exclusively at work. They seem to be fine but I also prefer a wix or Napa gold filter.

The shop I work at is a fleet shop where they own all the trucks but they do have owner operators and we have two types of oil we have mobile delvac and we got rotella same thing when it comes to filters fleet guard and then cat filters for the guys that have cats now it varies from on owner operator to owner operator what they prefer some guys usually guard some guys use cats we send out oil samples quite often for the customers or should I say owner operators and sometimes they run cat filters sometimes they run fleetguard I suppose it depending on how much money they want to spend on them filter because cats are expensive fleet guards are we cheaper we've had samples come back and had never any issues with either filter I think they're both good filters to be honest with cat filters I think you're just paying for the name I don't think they do any better job filtering than flea cards do in my opinion I've been doing oil changes for 25 years and I haven't seen a difference. When it comes to the oil I think oil is oil it's just totally depends on the additive that the company adds to the oil we had an oil rep come out from an oil company and that's what he told us mobile it's all oil it totally depends on what they add to it That's the only difference between oil it was pretty fascinating here here this guy talk about that.

@@nightrider6769 I agree. I work for one of the largest transportation companies in the country and fleetguard is all we use for the most part.

Fleetguard and Baldwin make a pretty good filter, that's what my step dad runs on his trucks 2013 KW T660 that has the paccar motor in it, his older 84 Kenworth we run aftermarket filters on the big cam 400 in that. His Mack truck we filter that with the Baldwin and that has a 60 series Detroit. The last two trucks he has have been sitting for several years now, over a decade plus anyway. They're both International 4300 series one truck has a 340B cat B model, and the other one has a blowed up 8v92. I don't think we've ever run OEM filters on any of the trucks ever, always been fleetguard or Baldwin. I will say though the cat Motors look a whole bunch better with cat filters. More appealing to the eye. Meow meow I love Kitty Cats.😘😁😊😉🤗☝️👊👍

Almost got an oil bath when pulling that filter out. That has to be the largest oil filter I have ever seen. I would check with Caterpillar dealer to see what they recommend as an alternative when there’s a shortage of their parts. I think the pennies per mile analogy is the best argument for oem parts, especially when you are under warranty. The thing is the warranty is not necessarily with CAT and it appears this rebuild was by an aftermarket engine builder. I do know first hand that CAT is short on everything right now.

The cat filters cost more but they are worth it. The cats have small balls between the filters element fins. It keeps the fins from clogging and sticking together. Stock up on everything, it's going to triple in cost very soon. $$$$!

They say Cat filters are the best but I don't know. And I never liked Rotella in a 3406, they always seem to burn the stuff as soon as you start using it and some engines burn a lot of it! That B model is a great engine !

A simple test on differences in filtration might be to cut out an area filter pleats to line a funnel and pour a known volume (or mass) of clean (or dirty) oil and time how long it takes for 3/4 of that value to drain through? Would take a bit of setting up to be reasonably empirical but shouldn't require any kit you don't already have lying around. Except filters.
