PETER PARKER DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE A TEENAGER

Ойын-сауық

The new Ultimate Spider-Man comic series is a step in the right direction for Peter Parker as a character. For the past decade, the majority of Spider-Man adaptations that we got made Peter a teenager. But does he have to be? 🕷
This is gonna be my first ever video essay on the channel, and I'm gonna explain why Spider-Man doesn’t have to be a teenager in every story he appears in. Sorry that the video is not very long, but I hope you enjoy what I managed to come up with. Be sure to like, comment and subscribe!

Even as a kid, I like when Peter was shown to be older like in the JMS run in the 2000's. Peter is in his late 20-early 30's in those books and it's perfect, he still has some growing up to do and still makes mistakes but he's more mature and less naive. I prefer Peter with real responsibility, not just high school drama.

Whats even worse is most of Peter's best storylines happened when he was an adult. Sin Eater arc, Superior Spiderman, Symbiote Saga, Separation Anxiety, Kravens Last Hunt, Maximum Carnage, Death of Gwen Stacy. All took place in his early to late 20s. Peter wasnt even a teen for very long in general. He was in college by issue 25. And the whole "great responsibility" line works more as an adult because he has a full time job, married, has kids (depending on writer), and has to maintain his superhero antics as well. Him as an adult gives him more choices and responsibilities which can make him even more compelling. And out of touch editors and writers saying being married isnt "relateable". Yes it is. I grew up with spiderman since i was a kid and im now married and my wife is pregnant. Marriage is a normal, common thing. Yes he was a nerd an outcast but over the years gained confidence and better social skills. It happens to all of us, we grow as we get older. So him going from a shy awkward and misanthropic teen to a mature and responsible adult. I cant think of anything more relatable

Whoever said he needed to be a teenager is either a old head since the 60s or or someone that was born in the 2000s . As a 90s kid who haven't gotten in the comics since 16. Most of the Spider-Man adaptations that I have watched back then, he was always viewed as a college kid / young adult til like the mid-2000s with the ultimate Spider-Man video games. What is cool that you know they showing his humble beginnings, a person didn't care for it because at that time we have watched so many superhero there are teenagers that I prefer those then Spider-Man. Key word man

A lot of Spidey fans want main universe Peter to be an adult. He shines when he's had all his shit more or less sorted and isn't an always broke loser. I remember when OMD came out and the backlash. Quesada is still on my permanent shit-list for that. IMO, I think Quesada, etc have this thing that Peter has to be single, no kids, always broke because that's the Spider-Man they grew up with and they want to relive those years. I think they resent being older themselves and don't want that for their fav character that they project hard onto. They want to live vicariously through the character, having a rotating romantic interest line like he did in his hs/college eras and they're not really interested in writing good stories that would appeal to an audience that isn't in their echo chamber. There's a reason why the new Ultimate Spider-Man has been doing so well and only the first issue has come out. That's the Peter a lot of fans want. We've gotten teen Peter so many times! If TPTB think that Spider-Man has to be a teenager in order to be relatable, there's Miles. They can do flashback stories of Peter, there's a whole multiverse! Just let 616!Peter be a grown ass man with MJ as his wife or his gf at least! They work so well together!

I think you most allow new readers to feel the same as you when you meet the character. I was 10 when I first like spiderman, I new him before of course, but it was kind of boring to me, until I read Ultimate Spiderman in the 2000s, As a 10 yo kid he became my favourite superhero and still has that place in my heart. I believe that anyone should be able to relate that way with such a character, and maybe I dont enjoy the comics as much as before, but Im sure that if spiderman is young, like 15/25, in that range, it will be great for the new readers, Then you got a lot of comics who explore adulthood in a more mature way and that has characters you can relate easly...Dont forget if spiderman grows up, the others must do it too. Like a 70 years old Ironman, a 80years old hulk, the grannys and grampas gang of FF... etc.

my Favortie Incarnations of Spider-Man that show Peter Parker grow and Mature into the Man Uncle Ben taught him to be are The 90s animated Series 1994, The Sam Raimi Trilogy with Tobey Maguire 2002-2007, and the PS4 Insomniac game Universe and Peter B Parker in Spider Verse both in 2018 these few show Peter Parker as a Adult in College or as a teacher or Marry MJ and are past the days of high school and being a Teenager and idk why Marvel has to have Peter stay as a Kid forever

Heres the thing I think a lot of people lean to far one way or the other. Peter did start off as a teenager and what made him unique and helped him stood out among others is that he was a teenager who didn't have the benefit of an adult partner to watch his back. So we got to see him make all the stumbles that come with balancing being a kid going to school while also fighting crime. And we got to see him grow and evolve and a mature into a experienced hero. We need both. His origins started him at high school but he has to mature into an adult or you are just not developing him the correct way. My thought would be this for another reboot if it was to happen. Have the movie open up with Peter as an adult. He's Spider-Man and has been at the game for awhile and knows what to do. But have him face a threat that brings him back to his teenager years his childhood. Because being Spider-Man was apart of his childhood and kind of interwive that string through the specific times. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion Edit: glad you all enjoy my pitch

I feel like this pitch's Villain should be Mysterio. The rate of crime has gone down, barely any costume villains out nowadays. Tired of being seen as a joke by others and being humiliated for years by Spidey 24/7, the quote on quote "Master of Illusions" decided to take things to the extreme, and because of the extremities Mysterio has gone to, Spidey decides to go back in his good 'ol red and blue, even in his 30s. Hell to add on to this, this inspires other villains to make a comeback, especially Doc Ock and Ock teams up with Mysterio.

That's actually one of the biggest things I've seen as an issue with the majority of hero cartoons recently. I mean think about it WHY during the TAS days did the shows last so long? Good writers and awesome characters and almost none of them were kids. Children don't need kids in a kids show for it to be entertaining. If anything having adults is beneficial in the sense that it gives them the hope to aspire too. Seriously how many of us tied a towel around our shoulder and insisted we were superman or batman? Until very recently neither have ever been young in their shows, so why are we getting Kid Ironman and Child Superman NOW? Makes no sense unless its pencil pushers insisting its the only way to increase their views.

Oh my Good, he was a teenager for like 2 issues in the comic, Ditko later regretted graduating him from high school too soon. What’s bothersome is that people say “I know he’s been a teenager for decades in the comic industry” And I’m always like WTH, he graduated in issue 25-30, plus he meets Harry Osborn, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane(not in ESU though), when he graduated. Which I always thought was so cool, because it makes sense when you grow up and kind of start interacting with society your life will be “more social” to the very least. And I always loved how the vibe of pre-graduate and post-graduate Peter were so in sync with their roles

Peter Parker is only a teen in most adaptions; the movies that Sam Riami did, the movies Marc Webb did; although both Peters did graduate from senior high and go on to college so they got be young adults at most. He was a teen on Spectacular and Ultimate, both I only ever watched rarely. I saw Into The Spider-Verse in early 2019, 616 Peter Parker was revealed having transported into 1610 while wearing his costume, I was so glad the writers made him an adult in his 40's! He got grow up finally. Unfortunitely, this was not to be the case with MCU Peter Parker. I'm going start buying the new Ultimate Spider-Man that just came out, I've seen other videos on it, and looks really good. I want to read a story about an adult Peter Parker who is married to Mary Jane and has two kids, and he also Spider-Man as well. I like that concept a lot.

I mean Peter Parker is biologically old it's just that the writers keep undoing any chance of character development that he gets making him mature to immature like i know I'm not a writer but a few fix this is simple 1 please let it aunt may stay the fuck dead 2 have Peter Parkerfind a perfect balance of being hero and being a romantic dude to MJ 3 introduce newer and compelling villains to Spider-Man and let the old ones stay dead as well 4 please let him have kids and learning how to balance of being there for them and take care of their needs 5 if you want a young Spider-Man just have Miles Morales be that or any other young character let miles be the one struggling in a high school setting and gained the rizz of the girls 6 what Peter Parker be a mentor figure to newer generations of Spider-Man and women to passed down the legacy to them And that's how I would fix Spider-Man Just these simple changes and then his stories will be great again to prove that Spider-Man has grown up with along with its readers

Well if Spider-man grows up, after marrying MJ, he loses his aunt, then he start working, paying bills, have a family maybe some 40s crisis, a divorce, etc. etc. many young readers that came at that time wont feel related to those stories, and those who may feel related to that wont be as much as an audience. I dont have the numbers but it seems obvious that comic readers of superheroes are more between 10-25 than 30-50... so why wont you allow the newcomers to this world of comics feel related with one of the most iconic characters? Ultimate spiderman back in the 2000s was a big windows to welcome new readers who otherwise wont related with a Peter Parker who was a married man with some couple crisis, who was a teacher, etc. etc. I think it makes perfect sense. Maybe for us, older readers they should come with limited series in his adulthood, so we can enjoy the character in a new stage of his life, one that we can relate more easly now. I personally don't worry about that, I enjoy a teenage or young adult Peter parker. Right now the new ultimate series set him as a 30, 40 Yo man... Is kind of interesting, but I get bored after the appearence of Green Goblin.

Even in the recent games have Peter as adult out of college with jobs matching his expertise(scientist and teaching). Really the sentiment at least in the college is to keep Peter a college age bachelor with a revolving door of love interest(Peter had a dozen hollow ones during Slott's and the other Brand new day writing crew). And even when those writers try to "progress" Peter they jump the shark by "magically" giving him a multi million company and later have him cause a recession(literally who would hire Peter have that I know it was to stop the secret empire event but still hundreds of people lost their jobs and money). And in the most recent run Peter can't even have a lasting relationship with either MJ or Felix’s due to the writer(Zeb Wells another Brand new day guy) coming up with the most contrived reasons to do so(MJ adopts some non existent kids with a dude that killed his own world and Black cat just breaks up with Peter cause he "never asked her to stop doing crime" which is not even true). It just feels like the modern writers and editors(Joe Quesada, Dan Slott, Zeb Wells, Nick Lowe, etc) either want to relieve some college age glory days and are scared of commitment(which well two of those dudes are divorced so some self projection might be a contributing factor).

2 questions 1. What if Mary Jane got shot by the sniper instead of Aunt May ? Do you think Peter sacrificing his marriage to Mephisto would make more sense ? 2. How would you feel if Peter revealed his identity to the secret organizations of S.H.E.I.L.D instead of the entire world in the Civil War event ?

    1) maybe, it would display his new sense of maturity 2) it would be a huge contradiction of his character cuz revealing to S.H.I.E.L.D. means all of their enemies would also know who he is and who his family is whis isn't very responsible

In my opinion Peter Parker's Spider-Man works better as an experienced hero or a mentor figure. I want Marvel to bring back Peter and MJ's marriage it was an important part of Peter's development. Spider-Man's true nemesis isn't Green Goblin it's Marvel Editorial.

Can I say one thing about the marriage. They probably cancelled it because writing a married superhero is difficult, who needs to remain static (because let's face it superheroes are static so to speak, meaning that they cannot really evolve or grow in permanent manner) so the best way to keep going was to dissolve the marriage. Also Imo it was a shitty choice but at least during those years there were some nice stories

@@Agent_Extremechip Zadsky would be great as a constant writer. I really like Spider-Man life story since it was an self-contained and well written story and it's time on friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man,but yeah you're right, at least the ultimate version is getting a really good start. Let's hope it maintains the momentum

i literally hate how everyone depicts or says peter is a teen/kid i mean if you actually read the comics peter is only a teen for a tiny bit for like 30 something issues then is in collage and everything, the only time hes ever been a teen/ kid for a long while was the ultimate universe were he was in high school and never got to grow up because of how the series ended.

first of all 616 peter is still an adult, he just struggling adult, they felt him being married would made him more grown up and not relatable which thats a lie. when i got introduce to spiderman when i was a kid in the 80s, he was a grown man in college

The spiderman PS4 game showed peter parker at age 23. I actually think peters young adult struggles should start to be more relevant rather then teenager problems. Throughout the spiderman PS4 game, he struggles to pay his rent and even lost his mentor. Tbh he's probably the strongest version of spiderman 😂
