I saw Lawrence of Arabia as a teenager and my friends all had crushes on Omar sharif with his deep brown eyes. But Otoole with his sky blue eyes and THAT Voice!!! I still remember the s cene when he was whipped , he conveyed so much anguish in his face without saying a word. A genius , beautiful man and amazing artist ! Thanks Peter for what you gave the world!

My parents took me to the Sydney premiere of Lawrence of Arabia. I was 12. I remember being swept away by the majesty of his performance. When the film ended, the audience was exhaused. Even watching it today, it does that to you. It was spellbinding. At a press conference he was asked what it took to act the role of Lawrence. He said, "My dear man, I am Lawrence. It will take three years for him to leave me." That was the committment and it showed.

I went to the premier as a child in Detroit, Michigan, at the Fox Theater if I remember correctly. That's whyI'm watching this, I was swept away with the musical score, matching the scenery all of it a mastery and thank my parents for bringing me. Have been fascinated with Peter O'Toole ever since! 🤝💛

Lawrence of Arabia is the most beautiful movie with that scene in the desert and the wonderful music ..!! Those great actors were giants and the epic roles they played will be forever in our hearts ♥️

Peter lived a life like no other. He was an outrageous personality and an outstanding actor. His Lawrence was a performance that not only deserved an Oscar but should have acrued every acting accolade. His two performances of Henry 2 were unmatched. An amazing personality that lived his life as he wanted.

Like many moviegoers, I discovered Peter O'Toole in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. I've seen several of his subsequent films, but I've lost count of how many times I've seen LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. I don't know of another movie that so spectacularly made an actor a star. It seems fitting with Peter O'Toole's life.

The last thing O’Toole was is an egotist. He was one of the nest actors in history, and a philosopher. Also, one the most handsome men on screen.

Most charming man I ever met. A lion with a wink and sparkle in his eye. If he saw there was an opportunity to create fun-- stand back!

Probably the greatest actor ever and oh so handsome. 💕

I believe his "Goodbye Mr Chips", was his greatest part, not much seen even on the TV. His Lawrence and Man for all seasons are unforgettably!

I think in "Troy" he also displayed the epitome of "ACTING", from the mannerisms of a king, facial expression, believability, etc,etc,etc...as was his way in every role he touched. What a wonderful "mischievous bad boy" he must have been.

Such an original, both as a man and as an actor. Lawrence of Arabia is the film I always remember as the moment I started thinking about what film could really do. Just a gorgeous film. O'Toole was stunning in this performance.

Peter O Toole was a brilliant actor with a fabulous sense of humour and a voice like velvet. When he was eventually given an honoury Oscar he said... Always the bridesmaid never the bride my foot ! Of course he should have won an Oscar !!! ❤️

I loved Peter Graves as the narrator of Biography. His mellifluous voice brought much to the lives of the amazing people he spoke of. I think he deserves Honorable Mention here, too.

@@KillgoreTrout43 And a dream to work with apparently. My mother's family including her, my grandmother and uncles were extras in many films and had the pleasure to be in Goodbye Mr Chips. They all have said he was a true professional and more importantly a real gentleman. As was the lovely Albert Finney who they adored and appeared with in Tom Jones. My grandmother and uncle can be seen in the hanging scene at the end. My uncle is the tearful blonde haired toddler in that scene!

@Johnny Toner they were mental cases back then also, they just had more class than today's stars. O'Toole and Harris were about as mental as they come. Their drinking stories. Go watch a compilation of "O'Toole and Harris on Letterman". I just watched that recently and it was hilarious.

i saw him on stage in the West End in 'Jeffrey Barnard is Unwell 'in the nineties, pure genius, hilarious just hilarious & i got to meet him! My late dad had been a close friend of Alan Bates who had been one of Peters lifetime friends since RADA - went round after the play & he was utterly lovely & so funny. Never forgotten it ...they dont make men like that anymore....😞

What a treasure of a memory to hold. I remember back in the late seventees i was a 17 - 18 year old and Peter O`Toole walked by along Harcourt Street in Dublin. He wore a full lenght crombie black coat with a 10 foot red scarfe wrapped around his neck. A Munster rugby fan on his merry way to meet some fellow `lunatics` in The Bailey` bar, off Grafton Street. I know because when i popped in a few hous later, there was the great man holding court at the bar surrounded by a few lucky ones in total awe of his way of telling a story thats charming enough not to bore the pants off people who are a generation below you. He was a gifted man. And the world of acting is a whole lot better for Peter O` Toole. R.I.P. Sir Peter.

@anniehaynes: I saw that production too - can't remember ever having laughed so much before. And it was one of the nights when the egg trick worked! Apparently sometimes it didn't and had alternative lines worked out just in case. What a lovely night that was. Saw the same play in French here in Paris with Jacques "Dîner des Cons" Villeret in the lead. Very good too although he didn't look much like Jeffrey Bernard or Peter O'Toole!

I loved Peter O'Toole. Fell in love with the man when I was only 6 years old; the year after Lawrence of Arabia (my favorite movie of all time) was released...and remained in love with him until twenty years past eternity. Loved everything I watched him in. I even watched TROY because he was in it...not for Brad Pitt; not for Eric Bana...watched it for Peter O'Toole. To me, he was one of the BEST actors to ever grace the screen and/or stage. And he was damned good looking, too! Loved his "kiss my ass" attitude; loved his views on politics and the wars... I LOVE Peter O'Toole.

He never abused us (children or wife) but he had to get stone blind drunk every weekend and regardless of what we (the family) had to do without, (never food or a place to live, but the "extras" one might have) we loved each other and we loved him. That is what I meant by my capacity to love being greater than yours, and yes, I feel sorry for anyone who cannot see nor understand a sickness, but prefer to hate the person who is sick. That is sad, indeed.

Henry II in Becket is OTOOLE at his zenith. After that , you knew he could & would be hilarious, seeringly dramatic, and unforgettable in whatever came next. His first Henry is at turns outrageous , pathetic, seething , and hysterical .

Saw him with Susannah York in Shaw's "The Apple Cart" at the Haymarket. He was a riot. Seeing him onstage is still one of the highlights of my life.

Alfred Hitchcock never won a best director Oscar. The best do not always win.

Michael Caine had the best O’Toole story. Back when both were aspiring actors they were touring England in a play. Caine was O’Toole’s understudy and frequently had to be in costume when O’Toole was late in arriving for that night’s performance. After one show O’Toole suggested they go out for a quick dinner. They went to a nearby diner but from there Caine has no memory of what happened next until he and Peter woke up on the floor of the apartment of two dodgy looking girls. Neither of them knew where they were but eventually made it back to the theater where they were met by the owner of the diner who sternly told them they were banned for life from the establishment. Before Caine could ask what they did, O’Toole stopped him saying “it’s probably best not to know”. After that O’Toole never invited him out again, Caine thought Peter must’ve considered him a bad influence

My first taste of O'Toole's acting was in the 1996 TV mini-series _Gulliver's Travels_, where he played the Emperor of the Lilliputs to absolutely hilarious effect. It's been fascinating to explore his work in reverse, to see exactly why he was so perfect to play the ultimate caricature of self-important British bureaucracy that I've associated with him since I was a kid watching _Gulliver's Travels_. His appearances on late night talk shows are also priceless!

QBG I remember this Gulliver’s Travels- I also loved him in Man of La Mancha - just read that it was panned back when it was released- in part for non singers singing- I thought that matched the depiction of delusion - of Don Miguel Cervantes experiences as Don Quixote. I liked O’Toole in everything he did on film - I grew up in Canada impossible to see him on stage. If I could turn back time one of the experiences I would want to have.

Quality, detailed, honest overview of an eccentric man and an unquestionably loved actor of generations.

The Ruling Class was a movie far beyond its time, audiences couldn't understand it and the best way to see it was while stoned!!!!!!

I hold Peter O Toolle in high esteem especially for his performance of Lawrence of Arabia. The scene in the desert when he is formulating in his mind of what to do next eg " we must take Akkaba", and everyone awaits his strategy, to me is spellbinding. A real work of acting genius.

“My Favorite Year” remains one of my all time favorite movies. The casting was fantastic….the writing, comedic timing, and every character was perfect! I’ve seen it at least 10 times and can almost recite the lines, but it’s just as funny as the first time I saw it. Playing a drunk convincingly is actually really difficult, but of course, he nails it. If you’ve not seen it, I heartily recommend that you do.

If Peck won because of "To Kill a Mockingbird", then I don't regret O'Toole's loss. Peck was Atticus Finch and that was a match made in heaven.

Someone else mentioned that the political climate of the time, in Hollywood specifically and in America generally, would not permit any other actor in any other film to win that year. Peck is superb, but TKM is a piss-poor screen adaptation (penned by a cousin of pro-Confederate historian Shelby Foote) of a brilliant novel that deserved much better treatment than something that's barely one-up on a made-for-tv movie of the time. They rushed to get it on screen, and does it ever show! Having said Peck's performance is superb, it certainly isn't superior to any of the other contenders. And there is absolutely no comparison between O'Toole's sustained professionalism in performing his role over many months on a desert location while Peck basically drove in from home and looked stern, interspersed with a few tender moments with the kids.

I wish him well. Wonderful, creative, destructive, persistent. Like many brilliant persons, the desire to manage themselves sometimes leads to self medication and harm to their health. We benefit from his extroversion to see something of our selves.

His work is excellently portrayed in a range of movies: My Favorite Year, The Stuntman, The Ruling Class and Lord Jim.

I personally think he is a descendant of the divine spirits of Eire: his impish, but devinely handsome looks, his incredible diction and acting capabilities, his generosity , , , a lesser person given his opportunities and accepting a host of mediocre opportunities could have retired in Switzerland: far wealthiner, and, perhaps, personally far more content.
