I'm from Leamington Spa in the English Midlands. The town was once known for it's light shows in the public gardens. My family had no members who served in the RAF during the second world war (all Army) although a great-uncle of mine did transfer voluntarily from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment into the Royal Flying Corps during the Great war. Anyway... one of my grandfathers had a few friends who served with Bomber Command and many years later I realise how fortunate I was as a lad to be able to listen to them chat and recall their experiences. One in particular was called Eddie George (RIP Eddie) and he was a rear-gunner on Lancasters. This is why I mentioned the light shows in the public gardens. Eddie would tell me that flying over German cities, but especially Berlin (the big city) was just like the light shows in the gardens. All the reds and greens of the markers, the flak tracers, the fires below. But when he described how he could see a fellow bomber alongside or above or below, and then it just wasn't there, the younger version of me was frozen. Eddie was a small wiry fellow, apparently he was a very good lightweight boxer in his day. My grandfather told me that. They were very close and I adored my grandfather so I guess he was like family in a way. Thirty years after Eddie's death, I realise he was a very hard man. Not just physically, but mentally too. He did 55 bombing raids over Europe - two tours (mainly though not always Germany and often Berlin) with a period of training new gunners in between the two tours. I hope I haven't bored you all with my tale and I'd just like to say thank you and always respect always Eddie (RIP) for what you did for us.

The Bomber that would have been as good as or better than the Lancaster was the Short Stirling--and these days it is almost UNBELIEVABLE that the aircraft was utilised after reducing its wingspan and capability so that it would fit into a standard hangar. Years ago I knew a test pilot now long departed who flew the original Stirling and also the Lancaster. He likes the as-designed Stirling better than the Lancaster--but sadly, it was ruined by stupidity and a shed too small for it.

Good Lord!!!! I hope that when they were not engaged in combat the tail gunner's buddies would bring him a nice Cuppa ( Tea ) now and then. Pilot in formation notices a yellow liquid streaming from the Lancaster ahead of him. M for Mike calling D for David. You seem to be leaking a yellow fluid directly astern of you. D for David calling M for Mike. No worries M for Mike, that's just our Tail Gunner taking the Piss.

Interesting how the Lancaster did not carry a co-pilot. The guy sitting on the right is the Navigator I believe. I imagine that most Navigators were men with some flight training who were washed out of flight school. I wonder if the plane had dual sided controls in case of an emergency.

Remember this film. In the thrust of 2024 life, the loss of young men in conflict gets forgotten. Bear in mind that old truism: 'Old men start wars, young men end them'...how do you remember? A poppy tucked under your car sun visor. Every time the Sun gets in your 21st century eyes, lower the visor and you'll remember. I do.

I visited Wahnfried some years ago. I heard his gravestone is somewhere out in the back garden area. It's a large spacious park actually. I walked and walked around but could not find it. I finally returned to the villa, I was standing out back on a stone platform, and I looked down, and right there below my feet was his grave.
