I think its great that you guys at fstoppers make tutorials for profit, it seems like it allows you to raise the production quality and it REALLY makes a huge difference. I do however think that the video titles should state that videos like this are previews or trailers so I don't get that feeling that I was tricked into watching an advert. TL;DR be less deceptive with the titles, the content quality speaks for itself. good job guys.

I'm not going to get into a big argument here about this. Our KZread channel has many more free tutorials and content than it does advertisements for paid tutorials and Fstoppers has been a massive resource for free content every single day. The fact is it costs tons of money to run and maintain the website and these tutorials help support that. If you don't want to buy anything from us and simply enjoy the site then that is fine. I don't know why people get upset over a product for profit when they themselves probably offer little to nothing for free.

Patrick Hall Like for me £197 is too much for video because i'm a student, but it seems like your audience is those who have at least enough gear to have variety so 300$ in the big idea isn't that bad when you think about the convenience of all the info bundled together and how much that info will take you in terms of skills. Some of these courses seem about on par with Karl Taylors pro videos and they are just as much, if not more in some cases!

F stoppers has become a video marketing machine, one that only makes tutorials for sale. Now, there is nothing wrong with getting an education but there are guys out there trying to help out new photographers like those of B&H or ADORAMA TV. Also chances are your local community has some cool classes available where you can actually interact with the instructors and peers to learn and get inspired. Nothing personal here, just my humble opinion, at the end you do with your money as you please. Peace to all.

So many comments about the price, I don't get it. Most people will spend considerably more buying the "next gadget" they believe will make them a better photographer, but they won't spend the money or time to learn proper technique. I haven't purchased this one yet, and I do mean yet. I received "The Art Behind the Headshot" as a gift last year and the quality of what you guys produce is well worth it.

I think it is interesting that as photographers, we constantly complain that people don't pay us a fair rate, Peter Hurley (a master photographer) releases what looks like an awesome product, and what do we do as photographers (...or I should say wanna be photographers in many cases) ...we clutter up the comments of HIS video wining about how his product is over priced. Stop wining and save up...or you are a hypocrite to want people to pay you a fair price for you work.

For crying out loud! The price point of this video is REASONABLE, when I consider that my last lens cost me over 1k. Is some technical investment worth the cost? I just went back through my books-on my shelf and iPad-and they add up to no less than $600 in products. Getting my hands on 4 hours of deep, Hurley-styled video (lots of NY flare and technical juice to boot) is more than reasonable. Keep brining rad content to the world, FStoppers! One day, I would love to connect in person. I've been taking photos for years, and I've never had the balls to publish, but buying and seeing your work is giving me the confidence to move ahead and go public. THANK YOU!

Tutorial is fantastic, Peter gives the how the why, goes from bad light to good light in front of you, goes from basic concepts, inverse square law, gives example, to cheap simple set up, slowly to more complexe, precise set-up, and takes time to do that, no rush. Plus very good tips and seeing him interacting with models. Find three photo buddies around you and share the price ;) And omg it's from 2014 hahaha

Priceless, I live in a dictatoship in a 700% inflation and a professional monthly income of US 4 dolars per month. So I know that learning is the only thing that no one can take from me, as our lifes here are subject to a policemen, or soldier's mood to let you go free, or been shot on sight. in more than 40 years in documentary nature photography, I never used artificial light, however, shaping light or moving around it for the shot you need in situ, is a great challenge. So, if you want the shot you imagined, before been on location, mastering strobist is where is at. Thank you for sharing Fstopper. We travel with three lenses, and now, I carry two flashes and a bright cloth for our jobs, where everyone has to carry their own! Regards Leopoldo Garcia. Note I am sharing this with friends and students as a example how photography can change with the geography. Travel light in life, its a lot easier to move along.

Watching Peter work through his thought process with real models was inspiring. You need some basic knowledge of the camera and a little understanding of lighting to get the full benefit.

You will never be him, that's why he is who he is and you are who you are. You can buy all the books and videos you want, you still will end up with you. If you don't have the talent and or the vision no book or video will help you. Work on you rather then trying to become him. Just make sure you got it to start with.

Andrea Scott I just watched this video again, having viewed it once or twice before, since the time of it's release; yes, it's 11+ minutes of promotion whereas you are overtly encouraged to buy a specific product. This video ALSO provides to ton of free useful instruction and information that, no doubt, a sad subgroup of "photographers" take objection to because of their delusions and insecurities. "Work on you rather then [than] trying to become him." "I get the fact that you guys are video pimps... for $$$." "...selling..machines.. that's what Fstoppers became..." "...it is OUR talent we nurture, not someone else's." Are you fucking kidding me? Quit your narcissistic sniveling and go refund payments to any clients who've been unfortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of your photographic efforts. "Creative Images Photography"...I can only imagine, considering a business name like that. Andrea, what's your excuse? I'm pretty sure the "bullit" point here is that you weren't being sold on nurturing someone else's talent, as scary and self-depricating as that sounds. Whose talent would that be, anyway? Peter Hurley's? As if. Your "High 5!" is tantamount to approving a pool of vomit because it contains chunks sized to your liking...the fact that your spew, in general, does not reflect that level headedness for which you've been so desperate is not surprising, but it is sad.

No disrespect to anyone, but how do people expect to want to get knowledge and information for nothing or next to nothing, yet they plan to take that knowledge and use it to make money in their own fields of endeavor? Free or dirt cheap tutorials are awesome yes, but in all honesty, I do not expect experts in their field to put together hours of working information for me for free. That is crazy. The work of professionals has great value, and I don't understand how photographers who constantly face the challenge of persons not wanting to pay us fair prices, cannot get that. At 11 minutes I knew from the start that this could not possibly be an in-depth tutorial and was very likely a promo for a such a tutorial. But even the promo itself has triggered some different ways of thinking in my mind about the physics and anatomy of light and the human face. To each his or her own, ofcourse.

Patrick Hall The issue is this is for photographers who have really just started in studio and most likely don't have loads disposable income to just spend on a video. Obviously you have to make a profit and that's completely understandable

  • @galtenfrench775

    @galtenfrench775

Patrick Hall 'It costs thousands to produce' isn't a valid argument for charging a high price for a video tutorial. A Hollywood film costs millions to make - but we can watch it for 15 dollars. You could potentially make more profit by selling to a wider base at a more reasonable cost. I think you can get more out of a hands-on course for less money rather than watching a video and believing you can magically improve your skills.

Peter Hurley may get shadows and highlights very nice, but the eyes are the most weirdest I have ever seen. Those reptilian catch lights are done by 2 strip soft boxes which you can see in this promo video. Also Peter Hurley is really bad at explaining things, he basically repeats himself like "watch this guys, I'm gonna put this sucker up high (shutter clicks) BOOM now we are talking, now we are in businesses" and over again, and again.

+Barky Von Schnauzer A lot of photographers don't understand the "intracasies" of light. Yea, they know about throwing up an umbrella or reflector, but exact light placement details I don't think most know much. I am talking self-taught or amateurs, not pros. Some like me started off assisting in a commercial/fashion studio, but other pros may go to photo school like Art Center or Brooks, and then some are self taught via seminars, videos, etc. So if you fall into the latter category then I am sure this will help improve their work. It may not be for everyone but there are a lot of amateurs and self-taught photogs that can learn from this video.

The title for this video is false. As many of the stopper titles are. Please title them correctly, just tell us it’s a preview of a course, not the actual tutorial. Wasted my time on this and several other fstopper clips, so much so that the integrity of the titling has now put me of fstopper or peter hurley

i wonder why Peter is working with you two bozos! Hope he got paid well. What a shame what FStoppers is now, lost your roots. Understandable that people need to make money, but do not do it making it seem you are not in it for that. Peter, you rock dude!

SPOILER ALERT*** This is an 11 minute advertisement and not an actual training video. This is probably better inserted as a plug in another video but hey Fstoppers you do you and catfish the hell out of the community. Dont be suprised when the numbers start to go down.

Edit the video tutorial to reflect that you are trying to make money and not teach the know how.

Poor marketing ploy. I wouldn't trust 2 of these guys as far as I can throw them. And I'm pretty weak. ha!

Disappointed with this video. Turns out, it’s is just an advert for a training course they want to sell, despite the heading that promises to teach you something. Not cool guys!

Another shouty photography infomercial with an over enthusiastic presenter. Give me Karl Taylor or Lyndsay Adler any day.
