Peter Gabriel - Panopticom (Bright-Side Mix)

Музыка

Panopticom (Bright-Side Mix) by Peter Gabriel, released on the full moon 6 January 2023. This is the first song to be revealed from the album i/o.
The Bright-Side Mix is by Mark 'Spike' Stent and the track is accompanied by a cover image by the artist David Spriggs.
Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, Panopticom was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London.
‘The first song is based on an idea I have been working on to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe: The Panopticom,’ says Gabriel. ‘We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on.’
Musically Panopticom drives along powered by the engine-room of long-time collaborators Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché, underpinned by haunting electronics from Brian Eno. Additional backing vocals from Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath. The lyric is, in part, inspired by the extraordinary work of three groups, Forensic Architecture, Bellingcat and the Gabriel co-founded pioneering human rights organisation WITNESS.
The release of Panopticom on the full moon is no coincidence and in true Gabriel fashion the approach for i/o will be a little different from the norm. The lunar phases will guide the release plan in 2023, with a new song revealed each full moon.
‘Some of what I’m writing about this time is the idea that we seem incredibly capable of destroying the planet that gave us birth and that unless we find ways to reconnect ourselves to nature and to the natural world we are going to lose a lot. A simple way of thinking about where we fit in to all of this is looking up at the sky… and the moon has always drawn me to it.’
Each new release of music will come with a specific piece of art, ‘we’ve been looking at the work of many hundreds of artists,’ says Gabriel, and Panopticom features the work ‘Red Gravity’ by David Spriggs.
‘It was the theme of surveillance that connected me with the work of David Spriggs because he’d done a piece relating to that. David does this amazing stuff using many layers of transparencies so you get these strange creations with a real intensity to them. Part of what he does is imagine what art might look like a few years in the future and then try and create accordingly and I think he’s done that very successfully in this particular piece.’

21 years is a long time to wait for any new release and Peter Gabriel has never been one to burden the public with anything but sheer quality . He takes his time and when his albums are finally on the open market you realise why . His last great album of pure orginal songs was way back in 2002 with UP ' and even then that was a collection of songs that he had first recorded for the 'US' solo project in 1993. Everything he has ever done since 1977 has been so original and unique - He is someone very special who stands tall in the music world . 'SO' back in 1986 was a real game changer and made him a very wealthy man , he is very lucky in that because of his wealth ( 2023 estimated to be around £189 million ) he doesn't have to 'cow tow' to the macinations of the record industry . He is important for so many reasons , his work with 'WOMAD and 'world music' bringng artists to the fore for whom other wise wouldn't be heard , his studio in Bath , his record label 'Real World ' and his ongong activity for many political issues around the world . He does appear to be 'one of the good guys ' in our convoluted mixed up world . His fan base around the world is massive he still continues to tour and his shows are always very special . His musical peers are small in number ( they know who they are ) and 'can't hold a candle to his creativity' , there was one but sadly he died in 2016 ( R.I.P Starman) - For me he is one fo the greats and now at the age of 73 he is still relevant and still very important . Thanks Peter for the decades , for the soundtrack to my adult life and with a nod to early Genesis " Me I'm an electric lawnmower , you can me tell by the way I walk "- I will sign off .- NB 'The Lamb Lies Down On Bradway ' is still one greatest prog albums ever recorded !

My apologies, Sir, thought you had retired. This one blew me away. So classic, and yet so fresh. Simply freakin' out about those vocals when the chorus kicks in: "Panopticom". The PG brand mark never shone brighter. Could listen to this forever. Deep bow. Thank you.

I don't recall all of the line-up, but it was promoting the 'Us' album so I'm pretty certain it was most of those same musicians that recorded that with him. Tony Levin was definitely one of them, and I believe Manu Katche too. He also featured Paula Cole in place of Sinead O'Connor's parts, and she was awesome. That may have helped launch her own solo career right after that. This was in 1993, I believe.

i/o is 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. To even reach this point, the 73-year-old artist had to take some baby steps. First was releasing a new song on each full moon of 2023: a recurring, self-imposed deadline that drip-fed the album steadily to his ever-patient audience. He also booked himself a world tour, where he performed nearly every song from the as-yet-unreleased record each night. Delivered between long monologues about the state of the modern world and the potential benefits of artificial intelligence and, of course, in between the select hits from his back catalogue, Gabriel asked fans to confront this work-in-progress material as a living, breathing art project before encountering it a long-awaited entry in his discography. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful, often thought-provoking songs tackle life and the universe. Our connection to the world around us with ‘I’m just a part of everything’ Peter sings on title track i/o , is a recurring motif, but so too the passing of time, mortality and grief, alongside such themes as injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. But this is not a solemn record. While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope, topped off as it is, by the rousingly optimistic closing song, Live and Let Live. Recorded mostly at Real World Studios and Peter’s home studio, the lengthy gestation of i/o means it has a sizeable cast list. Peter has kept his trusty inner circle of musicians close to hand, which means guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katché are sterling presences throughout. Several songs bear the fingerprints of long-time associate Brian Eno, whilst there are notable contributions from Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and keyboard player Don E. Peter’s daughter Melanie contributes warm backing vocals, as does Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath, while Real World regulars Richard Chappell, Oli Jacobs, Katie May and Richard Evans collectively provide programming and play various instruments. Soweto Gospel Choir and Swedish all-male choir Oprhei Drängar lend their magnificent harmonies to a selection of tracks, and the mass strings of the New Blood Orchestra, led by John Metcalfe, both soothe and soar. Renowned for being a boundary-pushing artist, i/o is not simply a collection of a dozen songs. All 12 tracks are subject to two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix, handled by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix, as reshaped by Tchad Blake. We we go was two of the great mixes from Tchad and Spike and they definitely bring different characters to the songs. Tchad is very much a sculptor building a journey with sound and drama, whereas Spike loves sound and assembling these pictures, so he’s more of a painter. i/o is fundamentally an album of and for the here and now. Many of its themes may be timeless, but they’re also warnings that we’re living on borrowed time, both as a planet and as individuals. As Peter sings on the divine So Much, “this edition is limited”. The wait has been worth every minute. i/o is another triumphant Peter Gabriel record. Enjoy Jim

I really like how he is releasing two different mixes of the songs. I hope, if it isn't too much work for them, that we get both versions of the whole album. Its interesting from a listeners pov but also as an aspiring musician to hear how production affects the final result is really useful knowledge. Very very cool stuff.

First of all, it shows his age, he is even young, and using all of the temporary methods moves him always forward. I´ve seen the concert 2023 in Munich and dream about for 3 weeks to visit another show anywhere in the world.

Peter Gabriel, wyjątkowy, swoją twórczością wspiera i pomaga ludziom w trudnych momentach (wystarczy poczytać komentarze), to właśnie jest wyjątkowe i odróżnia Go od tłumu innych pop-rockowych grajków...

I am totally into this record now. It is just brilliant. It is speaking to me esp when I am high on cannabis edibles. Every note and sound is in my DNA now. It's very heavy. It's very existential and Peter is talking about what we all of us that have been there a little longer are concerned massively about. We love life and we don't want the time to run out.
