Four Kinds of Horses is the fifth song to be released from the Peter Gabriel's forthcoming album i/o. This is the Dark-Side Mix by Tchad Blakes. Released on the new moon, 19 May 2023.
Written by Peter Gabriel and produced by Peter Gabriel and Richard Russell, Four Kinds of Horses was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, The Beehive and Copper House in London.
"Four Kinds of Horses actually began on Richard Russell’s project ‘Everything Is Recorded’. He’s a friend (and founder of XL Records) and he asked me to pop in to his studio. I came up with some chords, melodies and words on top of a groove he was working on. We tried a few things that didn't altogether work and so it laid dormant for quite a while. Then I started playing around with it again and changed the mood and the groove and something else began to emerge with a better chorus."
There were a number of things that triggered ideas for the song as it developed, including the Buddhist parable of the Four Kinds of Horses, which describes different ways a student can approach their spiritual practice. There is also a focus on “the interesting overlap of religion and peace on the one hand and violence and terrorism on the other. There was also a wonderful film by Hany Abu-Assad called ‘Paradise Now’ which shows two young men who end up being trained to become terrorists and it's a real insight into where the head goes.”
As well as Russell, who set things in motion, Four Kinds of Horses also features Brian Eno on synths which “sounded like electric worms to me,” says Gabriel. “As soon as I heard one I thought they would make a great three dimensional wall paper of sound and asked Brian to create eleven more.” John Metcalfe again provides string arrangements, “beautiful work and as the song progresses, the strings play a key role” and backing vocals from Peter’s daughter Melanie, “another lovely moment for a dad.”
Continuing the theme of working with a different artist for each song release, this month’s track is accompanied by a cover image featuring the work of Cornelia Parker.
This month we have a fascinating artist, Cornelia Parker, who does some extraordinary work. When we were originally looking at the Art from Us project, I'd seen some of her stuff with exploding rooms and had been fascinated by that, so I'm really happy that she agreed to work with us on this. The photogravure technique of William Henry Fox Talbot was an inspiration for her in this piece, and some of the other glass-based images in the series. I fell in love with this particular work - it's called ‘Snap.’
Just like the previous full moon releases, Four Kinds of Horses will come with differing mix approaches from Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix), Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix).

@grimble there is plenty of great music now. The difference is back in the day you didn't have to look for it because it was popular and on the radio. Today great music isn't on the radio. That's the only difference.
This song is absolutely stunning in every way. A complete masterclass in songwriting, producing and mixing. Not many artists stay this consistent in their musical output. 🙌🙌🙌

Thought provoking music? After Peter Gabriel I'd definitely say Ukrainian artist Onuka (Nata Zyzhchenko) definitely without a doubt.

when I heard the songs on radio, I wasn't sure, but as I've always loved peters music, I thought I would buy the Blu-ray version, & the album is brilliant, the surround is well produced, but this is the song that stands out for me, 4.26 is that magic part that goes to another level, 👍👍

This is shaping up to be a very dark album, and I love it. I hear clear echoes from II & III, yet it's also very new and 2023. PG is not recycling, but still on a learning journey sonically. To possess the curiosity he still does is amazing. Less than two weeks away in CPH. It can't arrive fast enough, yet I dread the show ending. I hope the live concert will be filmed and released after the tour.

Welp! Not shaping up to be a dark album by now 😆 but there are dark moments. I much much prefer darker, moodier Peter to Road To Joy, the chorus of Olive Tree, I/O title track, even Playing For Time Panopticom (mostly dark mix), The Court (dark dark dark mix, holy crap) and Horses (bright mix) are all pretty spectacular to me

I don't know what I like the most of this song: The Zen Parable which is based upon, the lyrics or to see Brian Eno and Tony Levin in the credits. Amazing!
This album is turning out so great. Of course, would we be surprised at all? Not really. Loving all of the sonic beauty of all of this and I love the way Gabriel is sharing his work this time around.

I am extremely thankful I bought tickets for the Chicago show. I paid a bit more then expected but I know this is going to be superb. First saw him circa 1979ish. I’ve been enamored ever since. I still listen to his albums. This concert will be a coda for me as Peter is 73. 🖤🌹
Yep. Lovin' this. I am consistantly opting for the dark mixes. Kudos to all involved but it's the dark mixes for me. I didn't want to decide too early but I think we're nearing half way through and it's becoming evident to me. If I could have all dark mixes (so far anyways) I'd appreciate i/o over UP as a whole. I wonder what will happen with these mixes when i/o is sold as physical media. If he sold it as a double album, with both mixes, I'd have no problem buying that to ensure that I got what I wanted and besides, one could change their mind down the road anyways. Oh, the complications of loving the Gabe. 😅❤
