Somewhere I have a vinyl of a concert of his w/ Kate singing on some tracks. It was quite a few years before this collab (I think it was even prior to 'games without frontiers' but I'm not sure). Anyone remember that one?

Back in the 1980s, my first wife and I listened to a lot of music together; Gabriel's "So" album was a frequent spin. In 1987 she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and the tumor was deemed "inoperable," so chemo was the only chance. This song -- that message, don't give up -- was immeasurably helpful to keep her spirits up, to keep fighting. 32 years now without her, and this song still brings the mist to my eyes.

1988, I was three years in to a long distance relationship, I was from the uk, she was in Denmark, I was in the Navy. The strain of being apart so much was beginning to tell and I felt she was slipping away. So three years after we first me we are back in the same bar, dancing and having fun, when this song came on. I held her tight as we danced then made the biggest decision of my life. I got down on one knee and proposed. we were happily married for 30 years, this song was our wedding dance. Last year it also played at the funeral of my wife as she fell victim of Covid 19. The song will always have a special significance for me, just like my wife will always be in my heart.

True story: While in college in the late 80's, 1 night in I was drunk and feeling down about a woman, and I drove down a winding road which ran along the side of the Wisconsin River. It was a very treacherous road with many curves, and it was known for bad accidents. Somehow I made it down the whole stretch, even though I was driving at excessive speed, and I really didn't care if I would crash; In fact, I think at some point it was my goal. Then when I turned around with the plan of driving back with the same reckless abandon, this song came on the radio, and I just pulled over and began to cry. Now every time I hear this song, I'm completely filled with gratefulness and thanks, cuz it totally woke me up and turned my life around!

Well, actually, for those that know good music, she's very highly rated and well respected. It's just that she was never a "pop-star" and she never wanted to be. She casts a long dark shadow on any and every female pop-artist such as Beyonce', Gaga, Katy Perry and the rest of the trash that passes for popular music these days.

His voice is absolutely one of a kind, nobody sounds like him anywhere.

This video was directed by Godley and Creme (who were one half of 10CC). In the 80s they directed a number of top music videos (The Police, Duran Duran, Yes and others). Such as beautiful song and video. Jamel, I'm stoked you found Kate Bush!

I've been a Kate Bush fan from when I saw her on the tele when she was 15. This song totally shreds me. It really helps me with my traumatic military experiences. Tears me apart, then gently puts me back together after a bit of a weep.

I showed this to my niece that was contemplating life , she cried and understood. Self harm is permanent solution to a temporary problem .

A song I have listened to several times when I was thinking of killing myself, just so someone would be on my side. Tears every time I hear this, but still love it, and so much more. Thank you Jamel. EDIT: It was 30 years ago or so, in high school.

I hope you stick around even though I don't know you. There's actually scientific proof that you should live. Your body is designed to fight for life until it can't. Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, your white blood cells attack infection, your liver and kidneys filter your blood AND repair themselves, your cells regenerate, and your brain keeps it all going....all this happens automatically. I really don't know what it is, but Kate Bush has the most EXTRAORDINARY voice. Every time I hear her she sends shivers down my spine. Many, many people have been saved by this song and also by having someone to hold like that.

The strength and intimacy they acted is so powerful. Their voices bring tears to my eyes. This is so stunning. There are no powerful duets like this nowadays. This song grabs your soul and doesn't let go.

its amazing to think thats the same voice that did wuthering heights, they are very different. Kate Bush's range is amazing.

This song saved my life after a bad car accident, I was tempted to take my own life and this song was recommended on youtube. Without it I am very sure I would've taken my own life. Every time I hear this song I break down and cry.

I have loved this song since it came out. I have probably heard it hundreds of times, but with everything going on right now in the world and in life - tears are streaming down my cheeks. Peter Gabriel has one of the most distinct and amazing voices I have ever heard and Kate Bush is a legend.

When your psyche has been shattered and all that remains is a sniveling husk; bereft; screaming into the void for something...anything the relieve the misery... Along comes a song like this. Yes indeed; this song helped me get through some hard years when the black dog had me firmly in its grip. It still brings a tear to my eye. The power of music to soothe the hurt caused by life on planet Earth cannot be calculated

Please do Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street. It's a beautiful haunting song about poet Anne Sexton.

I read an interview with Peter Gabriel where he was asked about this video. He talked about the song, and the video concept, then he said something like; “and I got to hug Kate Bush all day!”

The bassist on this is Tony Levin, who's been on all of Peter's solo albums, as well as live concerts. He's also a long standing member of King Crimson, and arguable one of the finest bassists you've never heard of because his style is very much to be that hidden support beam that holds everything up.

on YT somewhere there's a video of a Gabriel concert in South America some years back. Between songs, Peter read from translated texts, since he didn't speak the language (may have been Portuguese; not sure). When it came time to introduce the band, he started with the newest member, which meant Tony would be the last... Right after Peter named guitarist David Rhodes, the cheering for Tony started and grew steadily louder as PG read the text; when he spoke Tony's name, the place erupted. So much love for PG's longest-serving colleague and an iconic, beloved bassist.

It's the song Gotye wishes he had written. It's my favourite song (shared with "The Carnival is Over" by Dead Can Dance). The video made me "fall" for Donald Sutherland.

One of the greatest, most brutally honest songs that has ever penetrated my ears. I love Pete Gabriel. I love Kate Bush. I looove them together.

From Wikipedia: "He composed lyrics within a situation about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement." Kinda relevant what with covid causing widespread job losses and economic downturns causing economic strain in the home. Brilliant song.

A very beautiful and poignant song. When asked about the making of the video and if it was hard Gabriel's answer was spending a day holding Kate Bush is never going to be a difficult thing.

Biko is such an amazing song. When he played Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, during the SO tour, he ended the concert with Biko...and the crowd sang the song for at least a good 5 minutes after he left the stage!

This song means so much to me. It helped me deal with my depression during a time of unemployment a few months ago. It was suggested to me by my therapist. Although I already knew it from my adolescence, this time I really listened. It caused a breakthrough in my state of pent-up emotions and allowed me to really face my condition for the first time in months. I cried like the 55 year old child that I am and even now, months later I couldn't keep it dry. Thank you very much for reacting to this Jamel. You changed my day today, that's for sure.

Sounds like we've had the same experience. I lived through the '80s when I was a teenager, and I didn't hear this song then, but I bought his "So" album as a used CD when I was in my early 30s. I listened to this song off it, and it didn't affect me at first. Then I lost my job, and I had a terrible time finding work, because it was in the midst of a downturn in my industry. I was in the dumps. I listened to it again, and I bawled. It so touched what I was feeling, and I loved hearing Kate sing, "Don't give up." It's what I needed to hear. I was part of a job search group that met regularly to swap ideas. I felt like suggesting this song to everyone there, but I was reticent, because of the part where Peter sings about, "Gonna stand on that bridge, keep my EYES down below. Whatever may come, and whatever may go, that river's flowing." In my mind, that seemed like he was contemplating suicide, though he doesn't go through with it. Very powerful, but scary. I didn't want to give anyone any ideas, but I put it forward anyway with a disclaimer, saying I wasn't talking about that. I got a response from someone in the group saying thank you. This is high art. In my opinion, the most beautiful music video ever created. Two very distinct, emotive voices from two of the most original artists performing a timeless song with deep, profound lyrics. Love your thoughtful reaction, Jamel.

I've been a fan of Peter Gabriel since his time with Genesis and when he toured for the So album I went to see him live, a show I'll never forget. This song has a special meaning for me and it's quite odd that you decide to react to it now, at this time of year. You see, my father committed suicide the 13th of december 2006, he left a note on the kitchen table and we never found his body. I came to terms with this event but there's ONE thing that I could never accept, he died alone thinking that no one needed or loved him and that's the worst thing a human can feel. I wish this for no one. If you feel you're done down here on this ball, please, please don't give up.

Peter Gabriel has one of the most beautiful and unique voices of all time! So does Kate Bush! It CANT get any better ...

This song brings me to me knees at times. I absolutely love this duo. Hugging for the entire video just gets me.

“This Women’s Work” by Kate Bush is devastatingly beautiful. In the John Hughes’ movie ‘She’s Having a Baby,” the intensely honest sadness scene will touch your soul, especially if you’ve had miscarriages. We’ve been BLESSED with an amazingly stellar girl, who just turned 16. She knows that she has four siblings, two before and two after her that are part of our family that are loved. I found myself saying after the 4th miscarriage not why all those happened but realizing she’s is a God given gift.

When my father had lost his entire life's savings, he was desperate and suicidal...he would play this song over and over and over again. To this day, this song brings me back to that time and tears. Luckily he had us to keep him from 'giving up'.

One of only a few songs that ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye, everytime i hear it, it still gets me. I love peter gabriel and kate bush as solo artists, this video and song are perfection.

This song got me through years of depression. It’s sad and uplifting at the same time. Gabriel sang how I was feeling and Bush lifted me up.

Love this song. Massive fan of both, but this song is just incredible. There's just such a deep desperation and need, clinging to one another.

Peter Gabriel is a master of blending the human experience with music. This song will never not bring a tear to my eyes.

This song got me through a very dark time in my life, when I was young and trying to find my place in a world that wasn’t anything like I’d thought it would be. Even now, decades later, when things seem bleak, I go back to hear that encouraging voice: “Don’t give up, don’t give up, don’t give up.”

Every time I listen to this, I tear up and the hairs on my arms raise. The line that pushes me over the edge is: "Drove the night toward my home; the place that I was born, on the lakeside…As daylight broke, I saw the earth, the trees had burned down to the ground."

I've got a group of friends, who have been like family to me. We all battle mental health problems together, and have been through hell and high water (bonus points for getting the reference). This song has really become our theme song, as we battle together as not just friends, but family. Such a lovely piece of music.

Kate Bush....such an incredible songwriter and musician. And stunningly beautiful. "Moments of Pleasure", "This Woman's Work", "Jig of Life", just to name three. Oh, "December Will Be Magic Again" to make it seasonal.

As a person in and around music and musicians life-long I must say Peter Gabriel has one of the most mesmerizing voices, and has just improved with age. He is very affective. Gabriel also is a gifted writer and then some. Kate Bush voice is perfect for this song also. Great merge of talents on this song. I hope Peter never quits for my own selfish reasons. I hope there is some way I can see him in person again.

The live Secret World video is also something I highly recommend checking out!! Peter sings it with Paula Cole and they absolutely crush it!!

Kate Bush is a treasure ! On this song she sings multiple vocals stacked up that gives it such a full sound...

What strikes me is Peter Gabriel is known for cutting edge videos, yet here, two people holding each other as they sing. So simple, but absolutely perfection.

This whole album is a masterpiece. I saw an interview where he said he first thought of doing this with Dolly Parton, but she wasn't interested. Imagine that video😂

Dolly would have had a haunting angelic sound, but she is much shorter than he is, so it wouldn't have looked right. He and Kate fit together so perfectly.

Two of the greatest 70s/80s artists in one song with a huge message. Brilliant!

"Especially the way they were just holding each other throught the whole video..." "Cause, through everything, all the lyrics, he was singing and saying, he was still being held." That's a beautiful thing to notice. This is why we like you :-)

What an incredible voice he has. On songs like this his voice is so emotive. Kate also adds so much to this song Love Peter Gabriel. A real song for today

This song in the early '80s literally saved my life. Literally. I listened to it over and over and over and over again. And I chose to live.

In 1986 two albums were released, true masterpieces, Peter Gabriel "So" and Paul Simon "Graceland". For me his best works. Saludos

Ha. This song brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel like a child every time I hear it. Gotta stuff em down! Must....be.....macho.....

A truly powerful song. I love that they made the video this way because this song is a hug to your soul. This song was used as the music in a 1990s tv PSA commercial directed towards teen runaways (or those thinking about running away.)
