Peter Erskine on why he uses the Powerstroke 3 Felt Tone Drumhead
The Powerstroke P3 Felt Tone Bass Drumheads incorporate the traditional style of dampening a bass drum with a strip of felt into an easy-to-install all-inclusive Drumhead. P3 Felt Tone Bass Heads are constructed with a free-floating felt dampening strip built into the Drumhead without glues or adhesives making them ideal for vintage and contemporary Drum-set applications.

    Well... I am basically a rock drummer.. but Peter's drumming makes me want to try jazz drumming... Sound, finesse, groove... he has it all...

    I play Rock too but I've been adding some jazz/fusion stuff into my repertoire. Some things to get you started would be combinations of Rll, rrL, RLK, KRL. You can get a lot of mileage out of those 3 note combos and start to sound like Weckl, Gadd, Coliuta, etc.

    Well Aquarian has made the Modern Vintage Felt bass drum heads for years, but that's a thinner strip glued to the head. This looks thicker and that it moves with the head. Interesting.

    Yes, I'm wondering whether to go Aquarian or Remo here. I really like the idea of the adjustable external Dave Weckl adjustable BD dampener too.

    Just came across this video. Had no idea Remo made such a thing. Just got a Fiberskyn Ambassador for the front of my bass drum and it's perfect. Might have to replace my coated P3 on the batter with one of these guys...

    I'd love to see smaller sizes in this product...seems like the Fiberskyn would be perfect for a 16x16" floor tom...

    Not adhered to the head. The felt sits in a "tray" that's part of the ring part of the head.

    I currently use a Coated Ambassador with a felt strip because it is more open than a Powerstroke 3 which I find to be too dampened. Does this head have more openness than the Powerstroke 3?

  • @remopercussion

    @remopercussion

    Yes, it uses a thinner underlay ring in it's construction to open it up...tune mid-low tension to keep the head in less direct contact with the felt strip.

    cool, any flaps or rattles when tuned down?

  • @remopercussion

    @remopercussion

    No flaps or rattles, just like the P3 but the free floating vertical felt makes direct contact with the head. Tune up for a more dampened effect, tune down for a more gated effect (natural short decay)

  • @sanacanacnac

    Yes, I too was wondering about there being no adjustment. Trouble is, I like my batter LPP - so this means the batter felt gets looser during playing - whereas the portless reso felt stays true due to greater tension. I'm looking into the Dave Weckl adjustable BD dampener now...

    I've always enjoyed Erskine's playing, but not so much his talking. A bit of a "follow the money" sellout when it comes to products. But who can blame him? If we were in his shoes, we all would do the same. Money, money, money!

  • @drummaman1

    @drummaman1

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you've followed his career for any length, you'll see that your statement is incorrect. He was with Yamaha Drums for 25+ years, DW for about six or seven. He played Remo heads, switched to Evans, then switched back. He's still on good terms with Evans.
