Peter Baker and Susan Glasser: The Donald Trump White House Years

From its chaotic beginning to the violent finale, the Trump presidency was filled with moments ranging from the unthinkable to the deadly serious. That has continued until these past several weeks, and the man at the center of all of this could announce he is running for president again. That makes understanding his presidency even more important today.
Veteran journalists Peter Baker and Susan Glasser chart the ambitious and lasting history of the Trump presidency, drawing on unprecedented access to key players from President Trump himself to cabinet officers, military generals, and more. Based on these exclusive interviews, Baker and Glasser reveal moments both tense and comical, from how close the United States got to nuclear war with North Korea to whether Trump asked Japan’s prime minister to nominate him for a Nobel Prize. They also explore the moral choices confronting those around Trump-how they justified working for him and where they drew their lines.
Join us as Peter Baker and Susan Glasser return to the Club to discuss Donald Trump's presidency and what a second term could mean for the country.

Agreed, very good discussion by both Susan and Peter. The most shocking and concerning comment was that even intelligent republicans like James Baker voted for Chump in both 2016 and 2020. Party over country, party over personal values and personal morality. This is despite the fact that Baker and intelligent republicans clearly know what a criminal and incompetent that Chump is. Bill Barr said the same as James Baker. This seriously calls into question the character and honesty of intelligent republicans like Baker, Barr, and many others. There are plenty of intelligent republicans such as George Will, Bill Crystal, Michael Steele, and others who left the republican party because of Chump. Thus demonstrating a degree of honesty, integrity, country over party, morality, and personal values. What is so concerning is that far to many other republicans like Baker, Barr, and others are so partisan that they are willing to ignore their intelligence, so called values, and personal morality in order to continue to support a danger to the country and the world like Chump.

Whoa … i loathe Trump and have only ever voted Democrat but Its really narrow minded to discount the entire republican party. I live in Texas and both of my parents have always voted Republican until the last election. I was very proud of them for being open and balances enough to vote for Biden despite them never having voted for a Democrat but I understand that this does not mean they always will. Surprisingly the majority of Texans are actually quite rational despite the current morons running our state. Not all republicans act like Trump or Cruz There are still decent, fair and balanced republicans left. Debate and discourse leads to compromise and growth and we cant legislate fairly without both sides being represented. This is foundational to why our democracy works so don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

@@annebalderston2520 Antisocial Personality Disorder IS the Criminal Mind. Within APD is both Psychopathy (biological) and Sociopathy (made). It’s Nature vs. Nurture, though Psychopaths are found to poorly nurtured as well. The first 5 years of a child’s life are the critical years when one’s foundational Personality is laid. Without early intervention, the abused become abusers, and it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to change one’s Personality later in life. The worst crime in the world is child abuse and neglect, for it leads to other bad behavior, criminal behavior. Raise healthy, happy children with love and discipline, backed with love, and in doing so, we could virtually clean out our prisons, saving taxpayers billions every year. I clocked Trump at 36 out of a max of 40 on the Hare PCL-R, the Psychopathic Checklist Revised. It is the gold standard toll Used internationally in the assessment of Psychopathy. It’s a list of 20 Traits of a Psychopath. One need to score at least 30 to receive such a diagnosis from a Psychiatrist, and MRI brain scans are taken as well. Yes, he also has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Paranoid Personality Disorder, in my opinion. Dark Traid, yes. That includes Psychopathy, Narcissistic PD, and Machiavellianism, the latter of which is not a clinical diagnosis…just a Control Freak, if you will. At the heart of all abuse is the absolute need to control. Above the law….the God Complex….”I alone can fix it.”

What this reminds me of is the Simpsons episode where the family visits Australia where they discover that the US embassy there has a special toilet designed to flush the American (northern hemisphere) way despite being in the southern hemisphere. The toilet is barely recognisable because it is surrounded by so much technology. And so it was with Trump. The surrounding technology to filter his interactions consisted of the entire staff of the WH working hard to contain him and prevent him de-railing anything important. Like a 3-year-old emperor whose every word must be obeyed simply because he is the emperor, but all kinds of creativity is used to forestall consequent disasters. The idea of having a person so debilitated by his own ego and ignorance and unwillingness to listen, in a position where he has control of a nuclear arsenal, is frightening. We recognise that with Putin at the moment, and it makes people very uneasy to see the old fears of the Cold War era flooding back. But in the previous presidential term that is exactly the existential dilemma we were in with Trump because it did not take much of a sleight to set him off leading to outbursts he was unable or unwilling to control.

Interesting, to Susan Glasser the only thing Trump could do is to exploit the weakness of people. Then when asked why so many people still voted for Trump, Peter answered with a literary of things the voters liked about his presidency. These two versions of the story about Trump seem quite contradictory. It would be much more productive probably to look at the angle how Trump has been able to accomplish those things, instead of just focusing on his flaws or personal dislikes.

Thanks for this excellent commentary and critique. As a gentle suggestion for personal and moral concern is that you have been using your birth names . To make your hard and important books as you might write in the future, you might want to use one name, and hopefully the husbands name . I never ever heard ,in all the years that Nancy Pelosi was in public life, was her fathers birth name mentioned . She obviously took vows of marriage before God and human beings, that they were bound in flesh till death would they part. Therefore when the mother of Their children became a public figure, she keeps her beloveds name. The most important part of this book to me was your very first few first sentences. The general who was in top place said to Trump you are going against the constitution but I am going to stay and fight! I believe if you look back before Trump was a twinkle in anyones angry eye, Nancy Pelosi never moved from the constitution and never moved from her divine line to God. By the way, “ The Commonwealth Club”. Which as far as I know I don’t belong to, has “Nancy Pelosi “ as the name across the screen BEFORE “The Commonwealth Wealth Club”…

Ya lost me. They got the truth out. Free to speak his mind now that he was no longer in Trump’s employ, on January 7, Bill Barr issued a public statement directly condemning his former boss. “Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable. The president’s conduct yesterday was a betrayal of his office and supporters,” Barr said. In her resignation letter to Trump, DeVos wrote, “We should be highlighting and celebrating your Administration’s many accomplishments on behalf of the American people. Instead, we are left to clean up the mess caused by a violent mob at the Capitol in an attempt to undermine the people’s business. That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me.” Former White House chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, said, "President Trump is the most flawed person I've ever known. The depths of his dishonesty is just astounding to me. The dishonesty, the transactional nature of every relationship, though it's more pathetic than anything else. He is the most flawed person I have ever met in my life," Gary Cohn, Trump's chief economic advisor, said, "It's worse than you can imagine. An idiot surrounded by clowns. Trump won't read anything--not one-page memos, not the brief policy papers; nothing. He gets up halfway through meetings with world leaders because he is bored. And his staff is no better. Kushner is an entitled baby who knows nothing. Bannon is an arrogant prick who thinks he's smarter than he is. Trump is less a person than a collection of terrible traits. No one will survive the first year but his family. I hate the work, but feel I need to stay because I'm the only person there with a clue what he's doing. The reason so few jobs have been filled is that they only accept people who pass ridiculous purity tests, even for midlevel policy-making jobs where the people will never see the light of day. I am in a constant state of shock and horror." Steve Bannon told Michael Wolff, "I cannot tell you how many times Trump has looked me straight in the eye and lied to me." If you like, I can quote General McMasters, John Bolton, General Mattis, and General Milley.
