Pete Waterman’s World Record beating Train Set!, CAB ride.

Ойын-сауық

Join us on a not so quick CAB ride along the scenic section of Pete Waterman’s record breaking model railway at Key Model World in the NEC.
The scenic sections total 260 feet and there’s an equally large fiddle yard to get you back to the beginning.
This was early Saturday morning before the exhibition opened. The layout was still being commissioned. It was difficult enough just maintain track power as people were working on the layout at the same time.
A fast train takes about 5 minutes to travel the scenic sections, not bad for what is largely a straight line.

This looks really like a 1:1 cab ride, no shortcuts in track layout due to space constraint, all is scaled down from the real track alignment. A quick calculation shows that 6 kilometers / 3,75 miles of real railway is modelled in the scenic section here and the train is doing a scale 72 km/h or 45 mph . Impressive!

Mindblowing! I thought this layout was immense when I saw it in Chester a few years ago. Looks like it's been extended considerably since then! Spent many a day spotting at MK Central (and Wolverton) as a kid, so that bit was cool and a bit nostalgic. Can't imagine how much dosh Pete has put into this but it is truly an incredible labor of love, and a pat on the back for the many hands and brains needed to set up and run this monster is much deserved!

Having a dream and then having the wherewithal to realise it. A great achievement to get it so far along the track towards miniature mainline, even with whatever funds and however many team members. Having delighted in seeing the various videos and TV programmes on various iterations of this, there usually _are_ people. But I've never seen a single animal in any of the otherwise beautifully captured fields. Wass rong wiv im? Doan ee loyk cowz or summat?

I'm not going to be popular for saying this, but it's boring, technically it's excellent, the work on all the fine details and buildings is superb, but in the end all it really is, is just a very large loop of mainline with a few stations and a couple of sidings that have no obvious use other than as storage locations. This does not detract from the quality of the work and the use of a modern setting is very nice. But Pete's desire for no people I feel makes it somewhat soul less. That said the sheer size of it is impressive, as an individual technically I am in awe, but emotionally I'm at a mehh stage. I'm not even sure if it will encourage more people to have a go themselves, it's after all not as if even Pete can have it set up and running in his own train barn. If you want an impressively sized loop to set a world record it's a winner but if you want to encourage people to take up the hobby themselves then I think it fails Sorry 😞

@@fatwalletboy2 I can easily admit it is technically very good whilst still finding it boring, in many ways the late 1950's/early 1960's were probably the most interesting times for a model railway layout, lots of small stations with shorter platforms and most stations had goods or coal sidings or both, this to me has more interest and potential than just running long trains through stations.
