    Been saying this for a while about Shaffleburg…gotta start him. Here in Japan our manager fell into the super sub trap with Mitoma in the World Cup because it worked once and it cost us against Costa Rica and Croatia. Put your best players in the starting 11. Also, glad to hear that you’ve come to your senses regarding the Crepeau/St Clair ‘debate’. Not even close, as Crepeau has proven.

    It is not Canada's fault that Peru beat themselves with that red card which was more than deserved after that stupid headbutt that was forgiven for whatever reason. Not too much to analyze against a team with 10 players... 3 points are 3 points, that is what matters at the end

    Kone had a rough day at the office (happens to us all), but while Miller isn't the top pick at the back, anymore I do think you're being a bit too harsh. He came in and did his job. Can't ask for much more.

    I completely agree! The Canadian team was very uninspiring offensively and poor skill on passes and decision making.. Kona looked really bad, I absolutely can't figure out how the head butt was not a red with VAR. I actually thought Larin didn't play well except that one pass to Shuffleburg.

  • @psu2dcu

    Canada has a good shot of going through, but they need to clean up their play. The number of sloppy passes and unforced missed passes was ridiculous at this level. Despite the poor player performances JM made the right calls on lineup, substitutions and tactical adjustments. He was clearly frustrated by Canada playing too open when they were up by one and a man up. He set up Canada to take advantage of counters but the looseness in open play was naive.

  • @boxbury

    @boxbury

    Totally agree! The sloppy passes and unforced giveaways were driving me nuts. We would get ripped apart by a top 20 team if we play like that. The heat was likely a factor as it makes everyone feel lethargic but they need to value ball possession more. Also, our offensive lacks any creativity. Shackelburg would cross the ball and our offense were out of position or uninterested.

    I’m very happy with this game. Too many naysayers out there. Look, Canada was ranked 122nd in the world 10 years ago. We are traditionally not very good at the game. We’ve fallen short many times. When we tie France, the naysayers say France wasn’t trying. When we beat Mexico, the naysayers say sure it was an okay win but it wasn’t in a big tournament. When they play well, but lose the naysayers cry that they can’t find ways to grind out wins. And when we do finally win? Our first Copa America win…EVER! In 35+ degree heat plus staggering humidity under a new coach who they’ve only played a handful of games with, here come the naysayers with their negative views complaining about the W. The bottom line is, no matter how ugly that win may have been, they found a way to win. They didn’t lose. They didn’t draw, they won! They won in an extremely important game that could propel them into the next round. They won in front of a visiting team crowd. They won when they weren’t at their best. Yes, they won when they weren’t at their best against a #31 ranked team who hadn’t lost a game in their past 7 games. If you’re unhappy with this game, you may have highly unrealistic expectations.

    As a Liverpool fan, I was getting war flashbacks with all those wasted counters when it was 1-0. VERY lucky that Crepeau bailed us out, or we would have nobody to blame for throwing the 3 pts away! I hope Marsh moves away from the 4-4-2 though. We need 3 players in midfield, esp in this heat. Chile will be desperate for a win on Sat, our backline isn't strong enough to withstand so much pressure. Keep the ball, let them chase and wait for space to exploit with our runners.

    @@jrcanuck1 I don't think that follows. It's about profile and who's the best at what. The whole squad is a single machine, and each part needs to be the best at the particular function its playing. We are going to need to sub our attacking players (especially wingers), so who is the better sub over Shaff? Again, my point was not strictly that Shaff wouldn't have value as a starter but rather that starting him means we lose our most effective sub, which is a guaranteed fact and a considerable gamble. If we're trailing towards the end and have nobody who can reliably come in and make a difference then we're cooked before the contest is even over. And is Shaff likely to be a better combination with Davies? Cause if not, then you're not just losing whatever Millar brings, but you're also diminishing your single greatest asset. I don't love Millar, and I would love to see someone bring some offensive energy early against Chile (which Shaff would clearly do) but at this stage Millar's the one with the most familiarity with Davies on the left - Marsch has us committed to that. But given how poor Tajon has been, maybe Shaff starts on the right? My sense is that would be a mistake - that Ahmed would be a better choice on that side. Really sucks that Tajon is struggling cause we could really use him stepping up on Saturday.

    Fantastic to get the win on a world class goal--two wonderful passes and a clinical finish! Crepeau came up huge again too. The first half was very concerning. Canada was dreadful. I thought Kone was the best player on the pitch in the match against France, but he was inconsistent against Argentina and pathetic against Peru. Osorio did a capable job, but that second central midfield spot is back to being a concern for Canada. Laryea is too high risk for my taste. It is somewhat of a miracle he didn't get sent off, but then Peru should have been playing with 9 men. I didn't think Cornelius was so bad and Miller was "meh" as his replacement. Good to get Derek some rest though. So...Schaffleburg....he obviously made a huge positive impact. He created lots of space and problems for Peru down the side where his marker was sent off. His play wasn't perfect. He made some naive decisions with the ball just before and just after our goal. I don't think he should start. Why? Because his mentality is so good coming off the bench. If you start him and he isn't as effective, none of Buchanan, Laryea, etc bring that mentality in as a sub. You bring Jacob on as a sub and he makes things happen. Think Ole Gunnar Solskaar, Javier Hernandez, Louis Saha. We need a consistent, effective performance from all on Saturday night and we need a result to get a QF spot!

    Canada played sloppy for a reason. They were hugely affected by the heat after the first 10 minutes plus the tactics employed by Peru. Some countries play better in certain kinds of weather and some play worse. It is better to know one's limitations, adjust to those limitations and manage accordingly. Marsch did fantastic bringing out the 3 subs at halftime. Hopefully, things go better for Canada against Chile on Saturday.

Except that Chili only tied them & never even scored a goal. It's no wonder that our boys struggled, hell they were playing in a heat index of approximately 100 F!!!
