{PERSPECTIVES} : JON JULIO (Rollerblading)

Спорт

“Our sport has a history now, and a lot of the skating originated here.”
This time we take a look at the rich history of the Australian rollerblading scene through the eyes of Jon Julio, the sport’s longest standing professional athlete and most respected industry leader. Through his connection to the Australian scene in the early 90s, Jon sheds light on the country's unique influence during the sport's founding years and the importance of the leaders from rollerblading's past in 2019.
“Without our history, we don’t have a foundation, and these skaters are our foundation.”
Special thanks to Scott Crawford for organising the ‘Manly OG Skate Jam’ - 2020 event details coming soon.

I still have my Jon Julio Thrones from 1998 or 1999 don't remember exactly. Just unreal seeing him still going like this.

Man, this video made me realize that the only thing I'm certain about in my life at the moment is that I want to keep blading forever. I don't know where I'll be 10, 20, 30 years down the line, but I know that I'll still have wheels under my feet and I know I'll still be shredding. Blading gives me life, it gives me the strength to keep going. I don't know what I'd do without my blades.

I know what you mean man. Just started blading again after 13 somewhat years. You know life... and blading just died here. Just started again after all this time with a friend. I'm 39 now. feels like I'm finally living again.

At thirteen I thought the same thing. I kept blading until eighteen but slowly moved away from what I loved most. University, work, things in ordinary life. Almost twenty years later (and over 20 pounds more kkkk) and after spinal surgery (ALIF), I'm back. I always kept a pair of skates with me, even in idle time, and always thinking about how much I loved this sport and how many fantastic moments it brought me. There were times when I didn't even know if I could stand up again, but I'm here, 37 and counting. And if the universe allows it, now I say, I will never stop blading again. This video also reminded me of all this time. Cheers! (English is not my first language)

I started again at 32, stopped when I was 17. My girlfriend is responsible, she was always asking to see me skate so i decided to boot up and show her, that was last year and im still going strong now. Its funny but i never forgot how to do the tricks, just kinda stuck with me all these years. Sadly the local park is always empty so its always a solo skate session.

This was awesome to watch. I'm 32, and I hadn't skated in about 10 years. But, it was a huge part of my life throughout my teenage years and early twenties. It's funny, because even while I wasn't skating, I still watched skate videos pretty much every day, and I still thought about handrails and ledges as skate spots. The more I reflect on it, the more I realize how important it was in terms of creativity, building community, and learning about progression. I've been putting on the skates much more frequently as of late (which is a lot easier these days as there are a few skateparks close to where I live). A lot of the ideas mentioned in this video really resonate with me. Thanks for this one!

39 years old. At that point where my body tells me I can absolutely skate. I’m still spry, quick, and balanced… but logic tells me it’s hopeless: it’s over. This inspires me to go for it. Jon is one of the best to do it, so I always have to remember that… but he’s in his 40’s, and still shredding. Can’t wait to regain that momentum.

So funny how many of us old timers are getting back into it. I’ve read so many comments with the same thing. “I’m just getting back into it after many years being away”. I don’t remember why I stopped but I wish I hadn’t. Because I was GOOD. lol.

Yew Manly bowl. Where I bladed as a teenager around ‘00. Who would of thought looking up to those guys back then like they were “older guys”. 20 years has gone by and they’re only in their 40s and still ripping. I gave it away long ago! Who else spotted those photos of the old Chatswood interchange rails!!!??? Nostalgia.

Nice video. Captures the vibe and '90's nostalgia.... "thank you to Bill & Barb Manly Blades team" - where I bought my first skates (RB Lightning) 30 years ago. Who'd have thought scooters would outnumber us now despite the message painted on the skate bowl.

What we all feel well expressed, a great job that reflects very well the depth of what we do. As happens to an artist and his work, based on hard work one day he realizes that it is already art. We get together to get tricks but this has become much bigger than this and than us. Rollerblading saved my life.
