Persona and Heraldry in the SCA

The Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, gives participants the opportunity to create a medieval persona for themselves complete with a coat of arms. From Tudors, to Vikings, to samurai, the SCA lets you be whoever you want to be.
In this class, Lady Margery Heron takes us over the basics of persona and heraldry from picking a persona to creating and submitting your name and device.

Thank you for the extensive & inspirational detail in this discussion. For awhile I've been thinking of joining, and have been conceiving my persona and designing my identifying artwork while listening to this presentation.

That's a lot of great information, especially on the heraldry. I've been researching my family history for many years. I recently discovered numerous ancestors in England, France and Germany who are lords, ladies, counts, countesses, barons and baroness. One of my English ancestors was a Sir Knight who led his army into France to attack a village. The French surrounded his army and gave my ancestor the chance to surrender but he chose to fight to the death. It's funny you should mention Anne Boleyn because she's one of my ancestors. One of my Luther ancestors was the mayor of Nordhausen, Germany for forty one years and was honored by Emperor Maximilian for his dedicated service. My ancestor had a coat of arms bestowed upon him by the Emperor along with a commendation that included him and his bloodline both present and future. I live in Clute, Texas which is Kingdom of Ansteorra and I'm planning on attending the upcoming populace meeting for Barony of Loch Soilleir. I'm considering joining SCA with a sustaining membership. A few years ago I was using a yellow legal pad and working on my persona, his time, occupation, clothes, education and other details but I can't find it. I'm wanting to attend Rosenfelds Manon Melees next month because I have those three days off scheduled at work. In my mundane life I like to write poetry, short stories and had written a screenplay but it and 110 poems had been stolen out of my vehicle years ago. So I've started over on those. I saw from events that bardic is included at Mabon Melees. Isn't bardic covered under Arts and Sciences ?

Your own Barony is one that solves a problem that Mongolian personae have had for ages, namely the College of Arms' requirement that all names must have two parts. Mongolian names, historically, didn't have that. They were mononymic. Using the Branch Name Allowance, however, any Mongol can append 'of the Steppes' to their name, thanks to you!

My exposure comes from the 90's and there were in fact a lot of "period thumpers" . Glad to hear that has changed.. I know a ton of people who didn't join or didn't last long because of those types. Just a note on membership.. if you check the society rules it states anyone fighting to be sovereign & consort must be paid members and their paid membership must out last their reign as both Heirs and Crown. Officers also have to have paid memberships. How do Kingdoms besides the East handle AOA.. do they keep a list of those who don't have an AOA or GOA in order to make sure people aren't being ignored and are getting awards? I thought that; Chivarly, Laurel, Pelican, and other Orders got an augmentation to their crest.. white belt or chain, laurel wreath, and pelican in it's piety

I know this is a very old video at this point and I may never get a response but could I use my actual family heraldry since we were barons/lairds? Thank you!

Hi there! The SCA does not register real-world heraldry, so this is a chance to make up something new and unique to just you!

ow does the SCA feel about Micronations that are in the 17th century,? Do you FOLKS discriminate against a member of SCA who is a king or queen of their own Micronation?

What do you mean by micronations? The SCA has their own kingdoms & principalities that are ruled by people who earn the title in combat. Baronial leadership is typically appointed by the crown. I have never heard of a micronation in the SCA.
