I’ll say that Ken and Akihiko 100% had the best actual choice. The only problem with them is that they seemed to be running from the problem that caused the whole thing by saying they had to simply move on and leave the past as the past. Regardless, Yukari’s obsession with going back to the past was easily the worst choice.

​@@Keep701 to be fair on a practical in-universe level she does have a point, even if she's wrong on a narrative level. like the point of the story is that you can't fix the past but in this story they actually can try to do it. considering that they don't know MC's death specifically can't be prevented and that they did beat nyx avatar it's really not that crazy to try and go back. plus even if MC can't be saved they could totally save shinji and chidori at least until the drugs kill them.

@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz I honestly saw them beating Nyx avatar as a mini-miracle as well. Gameplay aside, it’s entirely plausible they could lose that fight on any other given attempt. I just don’t think there’s ever any justification to go back in time and potentially screw up how you saved the world from literal Death itself. I don’t think Yukari truly appreciated how insane and improbable that outcome was.

If they won, great she'd be with him alive and dandy. If they lost, at least they'd die together, everyone else be damned. It's also why I think they were more than just friends

Junpei actually is smart, it's just he wants to set up this persona of being a "bro". When it counts he's very smart, like that time they had to rescue fuuka. He's also like the only crew member not stuck in the past to some extent.

The funny thing is, Junpei is someone a lot of people dislike at the start (what with the misogyny and wish for all the glory), so I could see people wanting to beat him up. But he’s also the most improved, becoming a much better person by the end of 3 and straight up being the VOICE OF REASON in the Answer. This is the most tragic wish fulfillment for those people, because Junpei just wants everyone to calmly make the decision and even if he gets the keys, he’ll still hear what everyone has to say and try to come to a unanimous decision.

@@SlyJMan It's easy for Junpei to grow as a character because they set the bar so low for him to start with. (Which I could say the same for Yukari though.) All in all, Junpei was never my "bro". I don't think there's been a single "Best bro" character in the series that I haven't just outright disliked. They're always so... obnoxious. I won't however say Junpei was "wrong" in this chapter of The Answer. He wasn't right either, that was Akihiko and Ken. But he wasn't wrong like Yukari.

People shit on this expansion too much because the characters "lost development" I'd argue it is fitting due to the fact grief changes people. This was meant to show why holding onto the past is a problem and how losing a close one even again can make them stoop to the lowest actions due to desperation and delusions. The characters all handled it differently it is not a one sided coin and it is a battle to stop desperation to prevent a time loop.

Yeah. Anyone who has played it no doubt will know that everyone in SEES haven't got over their leader's untimely death, ESPECIALLY because nobody can tell why he died. Just imagine yourself on their shoes; that's not something you can just shrug off in one month. The Answer is them searching for a proper closure to move on with their lives, which is a great mature plot to explore.

@@X1erraI think it's somewhat telling in recent years that a fair few people have come around on MOST of The Answer. Showing where everyone began and where it led up to was excellent, and I think a majority of the characters didn't "lose" development, the only one you could possibly argue did was Yukari due to how she lashed out at everyone for not wanting to try and save Makoto even though it very easily could have (and is all but implied WOULD have) been a suicide mission where they wouldn't have gotten that miracle to save them and win in the end. I hope that the P3R version of Episode: Aigis makes some script adjustments and makes it clearer on that end of things, because I think every other character acts exactly how you would expect and fights for exactly what they believe in.

See, I loved the answer story wise. Just.... The grinding man. It wasn't a problem in base p3fes, wasn't a problem in portable, wasn't a problem in 4 or 5, wasn't a problem in any smt game for me. But the answer just.... Is weird. Everything else is great.

Here's what I think the pairing means: Akihiko and Ken represent that they have seen the death of someone close to them, Ken being his mother and Aki being his friend Shinji, but are accepting the Protag's death because they know it was the only way and are testing Aigis' resolve. Junpei and Koro represent that while they do have witness death, are confused as to why they need to fight to change the outcome of the protag's decision and are reluctant to neither refuse nor accept their sacrifice. Yukari represents that she is not accepting the Protag's decision nor his death and fights to find a way to stop Nyx, whilst still keeping them alive and Mitsuru is there to help console in her time of grief and chooses to fight with her if it is to make her better. Mitsuru probably knows what might happened but wants to help a grieving friend and fights Aigis as she too knows what it feels like to be in Yukari's shoes.

Yukari's whole arc in the answer is a parallel of what her mother goes through, throughout the main game. She was never able to get over the loss of her husband and Yukari swore she never wanted to be that weak and yet come the answer she's absolutely crushed. Portable does a fantastic job reflecting this as well as in FeMC's link Yukari mentions that all she ever wanted was to love someone so much that she'd never have enough time to grieve for them, ultimately it puts her in the same position her mother was and they're able to truly reconcile. Yukari gets a lot of shit in the game but I think most peoples view of her character is.. beyond shallow.

There's also another layer to this if we look at her Persona. Yukari's persona by then is the Egyptian Goddess Isis. And iconically, after Set killed and dismembered Osiris, Isis brought him back with Anubis's help and revived him as a mummy. However despite all this, Osiris remained in the underworld. Yukari wasn't someone who would just back down. She'd be the type to fight to see the protagonist again.

I agree completely. Especially since it's a natural kind of behaviour to be emotionally broken and aggressive if a loved one dies. Everyone who suffered a major loss like that can understand that. Especially if there is seemingly a way to bring them back to life (well, it's a fantasy game), which makes it all the more understandable.

I think your first Akihiko comparison is more apt with Miki, his sister, but this is a continual theme throughout his arc regardless. Anyways, good insights! This whole thread is great.

Yukari gets so much hate for this chapter, but she striked me as an extremely valid reaction to loss and grief. I hope an eventual reload DLC just attenuate some of the most aggressive points and it develops her in a more narrative cohesive nature.

Such an epic song for something so heartbreaking

I'm a little sad the context behind this song is spoiled so freely, but I guess that's how it goes to a nearly 20 year old game getting its remake. Don't look at comments if you don't wanna get spoiled~ ;)

I loved Ken so much in Persona 3. So when I had to fight him. I quite literally held back tears due to the fact that he pairs with Akihiko and that he represents The Future. When I finished the fight. I actually cried.

@@Lord-Rapter The FeMC route is very popular, hence why they'd port the Portable over FES. I'd also say that while FES is superior in terms of presentation, the quality of life changes introduced in POrtable are a worthwhile trade to many.

@@nairbgolden2008 That's more because the remix track didn't actually capture the conflicted feelings behind this song by usually leaning a bit too much into the either the grandeur emotional side (most of the official arranged version) or the combat side (UP4F/BlazBlue cross tag version). The song works because it is conflicted.

The game even has a music for fighting with your best friends... One of the saddest part of persona 3 even though music is great.

Sad we won’t be able to hear a remix/arrangement of this theme in base Reload, but I’m holding out hope for The Answer to come as DLC. The reason Yukari was so hateful and quite honestly childish is because she had feelings for Makoto and she was jealous she wasnt the one who held him as he died, which then turned into hatred for Aigis and the fact she was the one who got to see him alive for the last time. Childish in the extreme in my opinion, but Yukari herself was never much of a likable character in my book.

In that strange case I would say that FeMC would do whatever it took to get her brother back. After losing their parents they would only have each other for a long time. Even after finding friends in SEES there is a bond that cannot be underestimated between them. What we have seen is no matter MC or FeMC they are willing to sacrifice everything for the people they love. Neither questioned fighting Nyx the first time and wouldn't again IMO

@@pogen7279it was very backloaded. if they just found a way to better execute everything that wasn’t near the end it would be incredible. I’m an answer apologist though so I still love it but man it could have been that much better.
