This honestly feels encouraging to hear. As im trying to enjoy this game while learning adulthood. Also the sunk cost part is very much true, but it hurts worse the more you go along with it. I took one class of math and realized i would be wasting my time to be an engineer. Now im starting toward film. Hope this one goes better

Filmmaking is great, but like a lot of art disciplines, you don't need school for it in today's climate unless you're making connections in the industry. I would try something that has a better correlation with success, and do art as a passionate home project (as opposed to just a "hobby", since that feels reductive to a true passion). Take this from someone who minored in art. It's still my biggest passion, but my skills didn't grow until I dedicated more time on my own doing what I wanted to do, rather than a class curriculum. ;u;

@Juno0016 ok I'll give a little more detail. Filming is my main passion right now. While I do e joy doing art, it's not something I am going to make my career (I get that film might be a type of art but I personally still think it's separate nowadays). I understand where you are coming from as well, but most of the reason why I'm doing film is because I am intrigued by what it has to offer. Yes I can learn the things on my own, but I also am going to be able to get into the industry with college and be more likely to get a job out of the gate. Art is something I call a hobby because it's something I do for fun on the side along with splatoon. While splatoon could become an extra project I don't have the persistence yet to get fully into art. It's something I'll do now and again, but I'm not planning on making a career out of drawing right now

@@crazfamily6931 - Oh, I meant filmmaking for you, illustrative art for me. I also failed to mention my roommate is passionate for filmmaking. I wish he'd do more to get on top of actual film projects, but most filmmakers in the industry don't have a college degree for it. All that matters is that you make a good film that people like. With a bit of luck, more people will see it, and so on. Same goes for art. We're both in competitive creative industries. It's hard to break into, no matter our approach. Either way, you're the agent of your own story, so I wish you the best, no matter the route you choose to pursue. ^^

In an interview I watched with one of the voice actors for Fire Emblem Three Houses when the game had recently come out he said, "Practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect." In other words, if you keep practicing the same thing the way you started out you'll get really good at doing whatever it is the way you've been practicing it - but you won't actually be any better at that task itself. If you lift weights with bad form consistently you'll get better at lifting with bad form but not actually better at lifting for example.

The reason we don't tell stories about failing to get the girl is because they suck. They're boring, feel-bad stories that nobody likes or wants to hear. It isn't like a great tragedy, it's just a drag and something too many people would like not to live or relive. Speaking of great stories, I wouldn't say Sisyphus's tale is an example of the virtues of perseverance since it was a punishment and he had no choice but to push the rock, but maybe that's why you used the image in the thumbnail.

I feel like art students are all very aware of this mantra. I’ve been taught it in drawing and music already. Also, about sisyphus, I thought he could give up anytime. His punishment was just to push a rock, he could leave if he wanted, but it was just his ego that kept him going, right?

@@whyhellothere6855 No, he was dead for the second time (having cheated death by tricking Zeus and Thanatos, or Hades in some versions). His punishment for his trickery was to push the boulder to the top of the hill. Hades enchanted the boulder so it would always roll away from Sisyphus, thus making the task impossible. If there's a version or interpretation where Sisyphus's ego is involved I've not read it. The closest I can think of the is the ego required to deceive the gods, and Hades used that cleverness against him with the rock enchantment.

I think about learning when to quit and I associate it with the 5 stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Once you accept that the course has run, you’re free.

I love that Gem's advice always comes with intersectionality in mind, it's never coming from one single perspective and always seeks to improve the experiences of everyone involved. Extremely based 🙏

"Perseverance for the sake of perseverance" is masochism. Or psychosis, depending on how you consume your poison. Some people like to consume it on the way down to heck and some other people like to consume it on the way up to heck.

This video came out at a perfect time for me. I had just broken up with my first girlfriend a couple days ago. We had been together for 2.5 years, and she cheated on me. Twice. I’m still upset about the whole thing but I’m glad I made the right choice not trying to “get the girl” or in this case “keep the girl”. Clearly she wasn’t ready to continue having a long term committed relationship and I can’t force that on her, even if I (think I) am ready for one. Some things aren’t meant to be and are better not being. Even though like Gem said, on paper she was perfect for me, some things aren’t always going to work out like they do on paper. If anyone else is having a rough patch keep your head up king/queen/themperor. The grass is always greener somewhere else so don’t be afraid to move on. (Also sorry for the deeply personal KZread comment ew yucky)

This is a great video, this illustrates well what I hate about those popular "it's not talent, it's practice" posts and videos. Saying "you can be as good as me if you put in the same amount of hours as I did" is a gross simplification of what it takes to get good at something.

Really good advice. I’ve always taken the importance of giving up to heart in my life. I gave up on a biology graduation to become a doctor, and later gave up on an orthopaedic residency for a radiology one. Never thought this mindset could be applied to this game that is so mechanical dependent. I had only some little contact with Splatoon 1, and then came back when 3 launched. Ever since have been trying to improve with the little time I have. Picked tetra dualies after about a month playing and remember saying to myself that it was impossible to aim with dualies but persevered and made it viable and fun for me. But nowadays I have a feeling that almost everyone is better at the game than me and it’s been really impactful on how I relate with the game. I have been keeping the exactly mentality that you exemplified thinking that playing more games on my free time will somehow drag me out of this hole but it’s probably time to just seat back and review what I have been doing wrong on these matches. Thank you Gem.

I played After Alterna for *hours* when Splatoon 3 first launched, and didn't beat it. All I got for my time was misery, back pain, and sore thumbs. I decided, despite how close I was to the end (one of my attempts ended to the literal last enemy) to quit. I haven't gone back since and it feels really good not worrying about it. In terms of non-Splatoon things, I've been working toward my associates for a few years now, longer than the "expected" time to earn said degree. I would drop classes during random semesters here and there, and it got to a point where I was miserable in my classes and during college in general. I kept telling myself I was "so close" and it would maybe only take two semesters if I just "stuck with it" but then in practice, that mentality would fail and I'd go back to being disinterested and miserable, even in classes I may have otherwise enjoyed. At this point I'm researching small businesses and opening an online shop instead of continuing college. The option to go back is still there if I want it in the future, but it's not the path I should be continuing to force myself to take.

I realized this a few years back. I would often grind away tirelessly at making music or drawing super late into the night. But I didn’t realize the damage I was causing to my body and mental health. I wasn’t prioritizing relationships or jobs. It’s hard to accept (or even know what to do about it), but if you spend so much time on your passions, it’s time you’re not spending on everything else. And you only have so much time.

I can't get over how comforting your advice is man, I've gone through a rough breakup and just have had trouble navigating the transition from being a teenager to an adult in college and your videos honestly help so much man

7:29 Guardians 3 is one of those stories, and that's partly why I love it. Peter starts out with the traditional mindset of persevering through all her rejections because "she has to come around eventually, right?". But throughout the movie he begins to finally mature and realizes that he can't force her to feel the same way, so they end the film by them parting ways, and I think that's amazing, and more films (especially mainstream ones) need to do that.

I can agree with this video. I just finished spending the last 5 days to grind 50 catalog levels because the season was ending and I did not wanted to miss out on the rewards. I hated the last 5 days and I performed terribly. Honestly at most I can handle 2 hours of Splatoon before I have to stop playing due to mental fatigue, but instead did 10 hours. Improvement doesn't come immediately for me, only when I wake up and play the game the next day can I see the difference

Gem, as much as I love the funny haha videos, but i deeply appreciate these sort of videos that focus less on mechanical technique (while that is important to splatoon) and more about general mindset both when it comes to the game and life (some would say those two things are one and the same). It takes a lot of patience both with yourself and the circumstances to be able to phrase these sort of things so clearly. Doing the lords work, man!!

This reminds me of Liko's story in Mahoutsukai Precure. She keeps persevering, trying to get better, but it's only when she takes a step back and works smarter that she actually makes progress.

Really loved this video. I'm currently at a point where I'm almost done with college but its taking a toll to be honest a part wished to drop out sooner for my mental health but I can't really do that now since I'm almost about to graduate and I also really love improving at splatoon everyday it makes me happy to see the growth in the games I'm playing so yeah I'm just sticking it out right now until I'm done with college, its definitely draining but at least I know I'm almost there.

Perserverance i feel can be more destructive than restraint. I tried to go school when i was sick one day, but that was an awful idea to ignore the nausuea i had because i was extremley unproductive and negative during that day, because i was afraid that i wasn't doing enough because i'm tardy a lot of the time and i had been absent a decent amount.

i love these videos gem! for me its like you’ve given helpful advice to becoming a better competitive splatoon player but also giving great life lessons and i find that cool. you have my upmost gratitude^^

Most of the time when I'm learning about Splatoon, I can extrapolate to other aspects of my life. When I watch Gem, I'm learning about life and extrapolating to aspects of Splatoon

Splatoon 3 is the first one I can play online, and I don't want to be a top competitive player, but a good teammate. It is also my first shooter, so yeah, I'm kinda bad. This videos really help me to understand more things while having fun :)

Even though i watch this videos for splatoon, your advices have help in college. The video about ranks helped me to change my mindset about grades, And get better grades by caring more about learning.

I gave up on trying to complete the Fresh Season catalog because of this video. Tears of the Kingdom has taken up the vast majority of my time, And I still needed 16 or so levels to get all of the emotes at the very least. Apparently, matchmaking decided that that was the time to throw me up against people who simply never do anything other than play. Gigachads, who eat, sleep, and breathe Turf all day, every day. Perseverance is overrated, but remember the term in tournaments. Even if you're sent to losers, there's still plenty of Splatoon/Melee/whatever else you're doing to play/do.

I feel like the vod feature of Splatoon 3 is both a blessing and a curse. It allows players that have the time to improve themselves even faster, but it makes it harder for those who do not have the time to keep up with others. It takes more effort to improve at the top level speed in Splatoon 3 than in other Splatoon games. Of course, I am not opposed to the existence of the feature. It just makes being a top Splatoon 3 player harder than being a top Splatoon 1 or 2 player.
