I knew Hoyt for decades, since I was just a kid, toured the country and sang backup vocals with him in L.A. and on the road, and sang on a couple of his albums... and yet I never realized he'd done any episodes of Bonanza or had sung with Pernell Roberts. Hoyt was quite an interesting man with a stupendous voice and singing style, tremendous ability as a songwriter, and many demons to wrestle. Sadly, he never took good care of his health and left us too soon. RIP, big bro.

People are extremely salty when they hear you listen to some old songs. You'd think in a time where morals have been thrown out the window, they wouldn't care what you listen to. I lost my fair share of folks because they found out I listened to old music. I'd say it tells you what they're up to.

I had the Pleasure meeting Hoyt Axton in person in the late 80's and He told me the doing the Bonanza Show was his first acting Role, he had gone to acting school in New York, and they flew him out to California for the Western T.V show. He invited me to come out to his Ranch in Colorado, but sadly I never got around doing it. Rest in Peace! Mr. Axton

Why songs like this aint in on the Billboard charts and radio is beyond me. I need to find me some Hoyt Axton albums playing solo without the orchestra playing behind him. Sounds so much better with just him and guitar, and Pernell Roberts singing harmony.

4:16 *Hoyt* :Well every road I see, leads away from me. There's not a single one that leads me home.. All the roads keep sayin ," friend, come see what's round the bend.." So is it any wonder that I roam?.. All the places I have been , keep ah-callin me back again.. How down in the pines. I hear the cold wind blow.. My heart keeps tellin me ... footloose and fancy-free, but the road goes by and calls me as it goes.. *Adam* : Well maybe somewhere there's a someone waitin there with a smile , And maybe there'll be someplace I can stop and rest a while .. Cause maybe you weren't mean to be just a rollin stone. And there's a road to travel on that leads you back to home .. *Adam & Hoyt* : Oh but I'll keep travelin on, keep ah-lookin at the dawn. Till I can lay this lonesome body down.. and when that day has come, I never more will roam. And every road I see will lead me home... Well , when that day has come , I never more will roam.. and every road I see will lead me home. RIP Roberts and Hoyt

Jim Morrison sings a version of the first song here at the beginning of 'Runnin' Blue,' originally as a tribute to Otis Redding, who died shortly before recording. The song is (AFAIK) first attributed to the blue singer Lead Belly - the song is called "Poor Howard."

Hello fellow Hoyt fans. I agree with pretty much all your comments here, and just wanted to let you know that there ARE those of us still carrying the torch. There is very good music being made, always has been, it's just not typically broadcast on the airwaves any more. You have to do some digging, but it's there. I find it a crying shame that most people don't even know the name "Hoyt Axton" these days, he should by all rights be a legend. I describe him as one of America's best (possibly THE best) virtually unknown singer songwriters. From Voodoo Blues to Della and the Dealer, Joy to the World to the Pusher, Gypsy Moth to Boney Fingers, Daddy walked in Darkness to Never been to Spain, all amazing songs sung by an amazing voice. My personal favorite is Wild Bull Rider. I front a band in Asheville, NC, the Hazy 88's, we do all sorts of music, most RnB or Rock n Roll based, and some originals, and plan to work up a set of Hoyt's music. I really look forward to performing some of his works, paying homage where due, and keeping Hoyt's name alive. Cheers!
