Permaculture Shelter Design

Buildings and structures are an important part of the human element in a Permaculture system. Ecological design and green architecture are vast fields that this video is just scratching the surface on. This video provides a simple overview of building design for the major climate zones. Interesting, I've always thought that the person who built my house, around 100 years ago, was a genius. Watching the temperate zone section, confirms it. He had it all, both in the main house and the cottage (old horseless carriage building, too beautiful for a garage), will add a green house there for the cold season. I'm going to be making changes to my property, based on these videos. Also adding a pond or two. It's already a food forest/wildlife habitat and permaculture, with a few things to fix. Even my new roof meets the requirements (with zero idea it did.)

You lucky lucky person. Old buildings are so cool, especially when they've been maintained properly. Age is an aesthetic.

High insulation is key for heating and cooling. Do not under estimate the power of insulation. The previous renters had 2 large air conditioning units placed in the windows burning all kinds of electricity trying to stay cool. I have installed 2 layers of R29 insulation over the R20 insulation in the attic. I also injection foamed the brick perimeter walls with R20. Then I started digging out the basement crawlspace, one bucket at a time, to have wiggle room to install R25 floor insulation. I now open all the old windows and flush the house with fresh and cool night time air and in the morning I close up the house keeping that coolness inside. The interior temperature starts at 68F and rises to 78F over the day when it is 95F outside requiring no air conditioning greatly reducing the electric load to stay comfortable. The more insulation the better.

This has been a fantastic series. Not only is the course itself absolutely fascinating, Mr. Millison is giving me a master class in presenting very complex material in the KZread era. His use of presentation/analysis aids like the sand table is also VERY inspiring. I do have one question. In my research on passive houses, humidity seems to be a major issue for which there's no easy simple answer. Indeed, many of the techniques which do such a great job on temperature control, like tight sealing and evaporative cooling, air tend to exacerbate the indoor humidity problem. Is Mr. Millison aware of any complementary strategies for passive humidity control?

Really enjoying these videos. I'm interested in learning more about how to apply permaculture principals further in our daily lives. In particular, home cooking and reducing food waste.

Hola Luis.
