Rob, ignore the critics. What you're doing is great; in time, hopefully soon, you and those like you will figure out an even better solution. Personally, I could be wrong too, but I'm skeptical, Is that all phones will, if they haven't already, lose the hardware capability for privacy and tracking. More specifically, if not most, phones & laptops, are made in China, a country that requires tracking and monitoring in the country. I'm sceptical that phones & laptops made there, but sold outside China, lack Chinese backdoors and tracking. Think Huawei, but worse. I could be wrong, but I'm skeptical that I am. We need to decentralize manufacturing there.

I recently sold the Apple stock I had in my IRA. It had done well for me over the years while I had mostly ignored it. I don’t buy a new iPhone often so a few years ago when I updated to an XR I was concerned about its default to storing everything in the cloud. Then I bought a Mac laptop. I had to go in and change so many settings on the thing to get it to work as I wanted it to. I’m still finding settings I need to change. And each update to the iPhone and iPad introduce “features” I hate and some I can’t change! When I encountered these privacy videos, Rob’s concerns resonated exactly with what I was experiencing and feeling, even though I’m not a techie. When I replace this phone it will not be with an iPhone. And it will be a degoogled phone, too! Back to the stock…it has been heading down since I sold. I don’t care if it goes up now. I’ll just go back to ignoring the current price and find a better home for my retirement money.

Increasingly the only thing that can really help is to curate what you keep online so that you present whatever you desire for a public face. @@sylviam6535 Yeah, that's kinda on purpose The point of copyleft is that anyone who creates user-respecting software can pick a license that will allow any use of it except locking down and hampering end users. Linux is still on v2 partially because this was _the_ GPL for quite a long time, but mostly because Linus wants it like that. GPLv2 has two interpretations: The one Linus embraces is that he gives out the source and gets back patches - a nice symbiosis between developers. The other one - Stallman's original idea - is about ensuring that the developer doesn't have more control than the end user. So no legal (copyright, patents) or technological (locked hardware) obstacle should be put before the end user, apart form these that are unavailable in making the copyleft work

Thank you! However I don't find aosp projects that reliable. All of them are built using blobs of hardware manufacturers that we cannot fully reverse-engineer. For example, camera. You need to add closed source blobs to your aosp project just to be able to use your phone camera. It is similar with installing closed source nvidia drivers to linux machine because nouveau drivers cannot use the full functionality. If these blobs contain on purpose left vulnerabilities or backdoors which is quite possible, then wouldn't it put us in a greater danger because of the similar reasons you mentioned in "What is wrong with Signal" video? I mean if a user changes its operating system, doesn't have google id then this user has something to hide. Who guarantees that these SOCs will not install something to make these devices on the top of surveillance list? Signature checks during boot process isn't a solution to this issue since this check doesn't cover every component.

Thats what Sandboxing and Virtual environments are for. You can have a totally "private" blob like Nvidia on Linux and can Sandbox the drivers and APIs to not have access to any broadcasting components (camera, speakers, wifi, bluetooth, etc). Many intelligence / military agencies have their own code exactly for this reason. Reverse Engineering closed source blobs are another or parallel route to take.

6:55 I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

On a side note, there's also Google's Fuchsia on the horizon, if you don't happen to mind its liberal licence. Rob, Thank you. I am going to mention Assembler language in my comment... something that you probably understand well. This reply is mostly written for your viewers who are not programmers. :) Most of Linux and freebsd kernels are written at a C level, with limited Assembler modules. I just want to point out that binary machine code can be disassembled... Assembly language is just above machine level. I am able to read and change assembler language code. Most computer science degree programs offer Assembler language as an option during degree studies, yet most students will opt for higher level languages, and never learn Assembler. :) Yes, I am a "dinosaur" coder. Because Assembler is almost machine level, it takes much more time to figure out what is being done. Development and reverse engineering of binary modules is usually done at C level or higher. So disassembling a kernel and adding a switch to limit communication to any other devices and service or government agencies is perfectly possible. It is very impossible to disassemble a ROM, yet if you can solder, you should pe able to disassemble a ROM and replace the ROM with a PRAM. :) A PRAM would also allow for outside sources to update the PRAMs, which is why PRs are not used in most devices. ;) Just pointing out that anything is possible. ;)

But Rob, removing SIM card won't make you undetectable in protest. The cell modem stays active even without SIM, "so that the phone could call emergency number(s)", and each cell SOC has unique ID (sort of like MAC address equivalent for wireless networks), which is associated in service provider's database with all SIMs ever used on the phone. Therefore, if it is on, base stations know where you are, even without SIM. Your state agencies (also, state agencies of service provider's HQ state, if it is a global corp) can press service provider into handing out that information. There is no way around it. It is the deal between us and them: we use their services, they get to know everything about our usage of their services. To avoid tracking, simply, learn to function without connection. Switch the device completely off. Disconnect the battery. Alternately, keep the phone in a Faraday cage pouch if you expect you might on occasion need readiness ASAP.

"humans cannot read machine language" is effectively true for most people, including the majority of developers, but it's not difficult to disassemble machine code into mnemonic assembly which is more readable but even that can still be obfuscated to the point of making it extremely laborious to understand. "if you eliminate the source code, then noone can modify the binary code [...] Since someone always has to have the source code to do that", is a bit more inaccurate. It's definitely more difficult to build modified versions of binaries without source but it's also not uncommon for people to do it anyway. My favorite example of this has to be romhacking scene, where people modify classic console games.

It did not 'bother' me, it just was not logical, and I gave you an actual example. I guess you missed actually reading that in your quest to imply I was 'bothered'. If you do not expect what you are saying to be common knowledge, then you would logically only address you statements, views, ideas to a specific set of people. See, that's why I do not go to AKC meetings, national physic workshops, and barber conventions, because MOST people like me, have no clue what's going on. That would be like me making 'corrective' comments about the nuances of music synthesis in an open forum to a general, average crowd. I have two questions. 1: When a company releases source code for public viewing, how do people really know THAT's the source code that was actually compiled? Couldn't they create a project with a bunch of back doors, then release a nice looking clean source code on their website that makes us think everything is fine? 2: Do location spoofing apps still work on Android 10?

In a GPL world, you can compile the code yourself. You don't rely on the source to compile for you. At some point, the last device has to have an element of trust since of course they can change what they actually put in the device. That would be a violation of the license however since the rule is, any change must be published.

Soon we'll be able to backwards engineer binary code, I feel like AI will be able to reverse the process & even sort it nicely for us with indentations. I expect in the future that ALL code will become source code, even obfuscation will be tackled by AI given enough time. Ultimately we all know that the CPU can only understand certain instructions, & all code eventually has to directly interact with the CPU. This is my prediction, I give it 5 - 10 years before this technology is not only available but thoroughly researched & understood, maybe 15 years before script kiddies can begin reverse engineering binarys.
