Perhaps the greatest fell race of all time? The Trunce!

Спорт

The Trunce is a 3.75 mile fell race that takes place in Oxspring, Barnsley. Named after the Trunce Farm that lies on route, crossing the River Don 3 times and consisting of 630ft+ of climb throughout the event. It is a challenging but fast, off-road series taking place throughout the calendar year. Starting just after the juniors at 6.45pm on a Monday evening throughout the months March - September with races taking place on a 3 week basis.
Costing £2, you pay at the tent on the night. No pre-entries for this one. Once you're registered for a number, you keep that number for life. You can write your number on a piece of paper and pin it to your top. No chip timing here. If you want a drink, bring a cup to take a drink from the river!
Existing since the 28th of February, 1968. 6 local lads 6 assembled at the Waggon and Horses and ran over part of the today’s Trunce course to Greenmoor, finishing at the Rock, a run which they christened “The Marathon.” The course has stayed relatively similar since that day in 1968, changing only slightly throughout the years.
The name originates from Trunce Farm that is situated halfway up the banking towards Greenmoor. Presumably the early contestants said they were racing around the Trunce Farm and this eventually was shortened to “The Trunce."
We've had a few famous runners take on the Trunce throughout the years. Perhaps the most famous was Scamp, the dog, (or the most famous to Naomi because it's dog related). To keep him out of the way of the runners, he was released after the last runner disappeared under the bridge. His dashes up the first hill became legendary and many a runner has wondered what the black, white and brown flash was that flew past as Scamp chased after David.
A junior race also takes place, setting off just before the seniors at 6.45pm. This however doesn’t cross the river due to safety reasons and most juniors finish before the adults return.

Brilliant running! I was the runner with the dreads at the beginning, you passed me on the final climb I think, I took a nasty fall before the second river crossing. My first Trunce and what a great race. Maybe see you at the next one!

This race is a rite of passage for all local runners. I ran it back in the 80s when I was a youngster at Hallamshire, I still have flashbacks swimming across the river! 😂

Another great video as always -great commentary - Even though I did plenty of fell races in .my Barnsley Harrier days - The Trunce was an event that went by me ( only done it 5 times in the last 45 years !! ) Suppose the Spencers Dash and South Yorkshire Road League Series plus the build up to Spring Marathons were always bigger priorities - Nowadays I have a bad sense of balance in my old age ---- and too scared of falling down !! Honestly surprised you ran it so close to your marathon but well done x

Scamp was my grandad’s dog. He’ll be glad you mentioned him 😊 great vid.

He mentions Scamp every time I stand and watch Naomi do the Trunce and we’re stood on the road! Fantastic story 👊

Dave Bennett has some old paper clippings and Scamp was mentioned in them when your grandad had run a 2:40ish marathon. Said he had done most of his training with him. So immortalised in the Barnsley Chronicle.

When I first started running the Trunce, there were around 90 entries on a good night and 70 on a bad one. Best time clocked was 28:28.
