I actually don't mind when people ask me about my perfume in a respectful way. I recognize that most people ask because they like the perfume (i.e. it's a compliment) and/or would like to research/buy it too. I also don't view it as such a private matter, unlike e.g. my tattoos.

I'm such a perfume enthusiast (of all types: body mists, indie perfumes, oil perfumes, designer perfumes, niche perfumes, literally all of it!), I will literally give them a full review of the perfume I'm wearing lmao. To me exploring perfume is a hobby that I will happily ramble about. I've never had someone buy the same of my favourite scents tho, perhaps they get overwhelmed by the information dump I unload on them LOL.

This is so interesting... Here in Brazil we have a much more open and warmer culture, if someone asks about your perfume, it's seen as compliment, it's a way of the person who is asking to say you have good taste and choose well, people even smile when you ask and then proceed to respond proudly. The people that don't want to disclose are perceived as rude or entitled.

To me, one of the greatest compliments is when somebody asks me what perfume I wear. I always reply honestly and it gives me great pleasure to share that information. Also, I like to wear many many many fragrances, I wear them to my heart desire, of course, I am mindful of social etiquette and I try not to be invasive with my perfumes. I don't believe in signature scents, there are so many beautiful scents out there, I could never limit myself to just one or two. Hi fellow perfume lover! I agree, the perfume world is so fascinating, so many interesting scents to explore! I therefore also like wearing multiple scents depending on my mood, period of year, etc.and usually disclose them to people asking. Personally I find it very boring wearing only one scent (and Jamila, if you don't smell your perfume on you, it does not mean you found your scent, it means your nose is used to it and people around might actually be suffocating), but everyone is different and I understand when wearing a "signature" scent, one might prefer keeping it a secret, as it's very intimate indeed.

Instead, if you feel the need to share something, you can always say its a custom blend scent, as there are perfumeries where you can have personal blends created for you.

I love having a signature perfume that people associate with me whenever they smell it. I find that my signature scent has changed whenever my life greatly changes. For example, I wore the same scent for 9 year while in a relationship. When that relationship ended I felt the need to find a new signature scent. When I smell that perfume now, I love that it brings me back to that era of my life. Do you sometimes associate perfumes/scents to different memories in your life? I am curious to know. ☺️

I was very surprised even by the idea of not asking about scent, it’s very different in Australia. It’s often an opener for discussion when you meet someone here to ask about their perfume and certainly if you like it you would always ask, I’ve never heard of that being an etiquette taboo. It’s good to know that this could be an issue for some people as I would never otherwise dream this could be something which could cause offence or discomfort.

So I would be very reluctant to share what I am wearing with someone if they asked me (luckily no one ever has aside from my partner and best friend who I did tell, but they are the exception) especially as I have been using it a long time too like Jamila.

Perfume gets absorbed onto your skin. It is becomes one with you. Depending on your skin, it will open up differently. Scent of a woman is more intimate than a lipstick or tshirt.

  • @geneva9990
    @geneva99902 жыл бұрын

I don’t consider perfume to be too intimate to discuss, and I’m a private person. You apply scent to your body, but it creates a scent cloud around you that those in your immediate vicinity can detect; it takes up social space and is therefore a fine subject for polite conversation. This is like playing music aloud in public and then taking umbrage if someone asks the name of the song. And unless you’re a connoisseur of niche perfumery or a wearer of bespoke fragrance, your “signature scent” is probably sold at most perfume counters and isn’t so unique. Treating your Chanel or MFK otherwise strikes me as more pretentious than refined. Several of the other tips are practical, though.

This exactly. It’s not like a hidden tattoo where other people don’t have to know about it. How it is too personal to be curious about it but not too personal to expose your scent to other people?

If you do not know the person very well, it could be broadcast all over social media, or literally blow up in your face as in your case, to the point where the joy of the fragrance was ruined for you. An alternative, tell the person its been discontinued, or that its a custom blend. I'm on the fence about being asked about my perfume. On the one hand it's a compliment: you know for sure that the fragrance you're wearing works well with your body chemistry, and if it becomes positively associated with you through consistent wear, that's wonderful. On the other it has bothered me before when family asks me what I wear and then decides to gift it to someone else. What your own fragrance is is so personal that it bothers me to think that people think a perfume is one size fits all and gift others perfume without prior knowledge about whether or not they like the line it comes from or whether they've worn it before, etc. I really like the tissue trick you mentioned. My husband really likes one scent in particular that I wear, so I've just hidden a tissue with a few sprays of it on his WFH desk while he's on-site today lol And in regards to perfume on clothing, I don't generally think that works well, but I do sometimes find it nice to put a few sprays on my scarves in the wintertime. I have a question. Is there a polite way to bring up someone else's lack of etiquette? My husband could use a little help with his table manners, and I don't know how to bring up my discomfort without sounding like a rude nag. How does one politely encourage or suggest the improvement of these soft skills?

I really like when she says that scent of a women is a very private matter and kept to be mystery and indeed it’s true we should respect one’s privacy and should not ask them questions in which they are not comfortable to answer and I know how it feels like my friends or someone just ask me which fragrance you use so it just you know make the conversation awkward so it’s like a important things we we all should keep in mind it implies to all whether man or women most importantly we all are human beings. Love 💕 your videos

I don't mind either, I believe that it is a welcomed compliment, that spreads positive energy in the room as more people want to be nearer to you. And as you say, scents smell differently on everyone anyway. However, if it's a scent you want to keep a secret, you could say, "thank you so much, I'm not sure what I'm wearing, it's a mix of everything ;) " as looking awkward and not disclosing it can seem rude. and that's not good etiquette :) great video Jamila X

I think it is okay to keep your perfume a secret otherwise it may influence people to blindly buy it . People even collect perfumes without even realising/understanding their taste or if that suits their personality accordingly or what kind of aura that creates . I really loved the tips that you shared. ❤️

I don't mind if anyone asks about my perfume, I just take it as a compliment but I don't ask anyone what they are wearing as a lot of people are not comfortable (based on experience 😅); also choosing a perfume based on the fact that it smells good on someone never helped me in the past; which infact is the very reason I don't mind sharing my scent as it will never smell exactly same on them!

Thank you for finally demystifying how to get all your pulse points without using half a bottle of perfume and having people smell you from 10km away. Whenever "gurus" talk about spritzing on the wrists, elbows, neck, knees, I was so confused! I thought I'd hate to be the person standing next to them on the subway. I use half a spritz at most during the day out of courtesy of others (and not to give myself a headache) and now I understand how to make that half spritz count. As always, an enjoyable and informative video. Thank you, Jamila!

Actually just thinking again - I used to sell perfume so maybe that’s why I have no boundaries about this subject. I’ve never come across anyone who wasn’t quite enthusiastic to tell me what they were wearing and I’ve been asked many times what I was wearing and find it a compliment. I like to share the info not keep it to myself, that really seems quite strange to me . So this video really did amaze me that anyone is mysterious about it but to each their own, I can respect that too.

I put on perfume only behind my ears. When I'm going out I always cover with a scarf. The only ones who will smell the perfume on me are the ones close enough for me to greet by kissing cheeks, and that's only a handful of people, that way I keep my sent private and I'm not making all people around me aware of it. I remember when I was a kid accompanying my mom to a perfume store, then walking out of there sick and throwing up from all the concentrated smells. That experience made all strong smells repulsive to me, so when I can catch someone's perfume without being intimately close to them, even if I'm sitting next to them in a conference room or standing next to them especially in our line of work when we need to be as impersonal and have a sense of sobriety, if the smell isn't particularly pleasant to my own taste then I'm just disgusted with that person and I avoid them for the day. When it comes to keeping perfume private, I agree a thousand per cent. For the sake of not disclosing social and economic differences, and avoid judging and being judged for the brand or the price of the perfume(s). It goes both ways; be it less pricey or expensive people are bound to judge and act on that judgement. The price of a perfume can easily be found online. Telling those around you about your luxury perfume when they can barely afford cheap ones, or disclosing your cheap perfume to people who don't ever buy anything below a certain threshold, both can be harmful when people's intentions are not pure.

I did that mistake - i searched for what’s the best perfume for women, the most complimented perfume, etc videos on youtube and I bought them instantly because a lot of people love it. Turned out the perfume that most people love, is not my type, I thought I’d love it but I don’t. It’s a waste of money, and I should have take my own time to actually try smell the perfume first and decide.

One tip about Perfume I got was from Tova Borgnine, when she was selling her perfume on QVC. She said when you apply it to your wrists do NOT rub your wrists together. That “ crushes” the fragrance & ruins the natural dry down of the notes. Instead do the “ Royal Wave” to dry the wet perfume. Also you can spray it in front of you & walk through it to apply a light layer. I LOVE the perfumes her company still sells. I also love the ones from Philosophy.

Without your advice I wouldve been doing same mistakes with perfume or my purse or other habits over and over again. Thank you for teaching me basics and advanced tips! Also I think men would like to keep their cologne a secret as well but they usually aren't so discreet about it because they don't have a competitive environment with other males in that manner like the women. Men compete in a different manner and particular formula while women are more passive competitive which is why most men don't mind sharing certain mundane things. But I don't think anything was wrong with you using your husbands cologne as a example he probably gave permission to use it and help out with your video. I'm also signature scent gal, although I've had a couple of different ones, in search for the right one - but always with key notes being roses. Now I finally found the one that I enoy most, however, it is very 'dark' for hot weather, so I purchased two different ones in smaller bottles, to use during the warmest weather. I normally apply with one small spritz on each side of the neck, then one spritz one the wrist, and dab, as you've demonstrated. Sometimes I use less, rarely more. My trick for winter time is, to wrap my scarf around my neck as soon as I've applied the parfum, so it transfers onto the scarf, and it makes you smell nice even outside, when you have barely any skin exposed. 🌹

If one has customized a perfume for herself then its OK not to disclose it or one can say that its customized. If a perfume is sold in retail then its fine to tell someone the name of thr perfume you wear. It would be rude of someone to not disclose the name of a product that is readily available in the market. If you can tell which hair color you wear or which lipstick, eyeshadow you are wearing , then there is nothing wrong with disclosing the name of your perfume. I better tell the name of the perfume then be rude to someone.

I don't think asking about perfume is a problem unless you want to keep it a mystery for fun or if you don't know the person that well. I actually think it's not different for men or women, I find that cologne and perfume are quite similar in nature so they shouldn't necessarily have different rules come with them. In Paris, it's not too much of an issue to talk about perfume, but we won't really ask people what body lotion (except hand lotion) or makeup they use. I find it difficult to apply makeup in front of people, even in fancy hotel bathroom. I suppose some girls do that in clubs, but it's quite unusual to see.

I'm not keen on telling any odd stranger any time my perfume brand, but of course no problem with friends. I've developed a good reply for the first category : "I'm so sorry, but it's one of the samples the perfumery gave me, can't remember which one. " By the way there are 2 more categories of perfume : the Eau de Cologne, the least concentrated and fit for casual occupations such as shopping , or at work ( my cousin is a psychiatrist and only applies the wonderful Guerlain Eaux de cologne ( the famous "Aqua Allegoria" series). The genuine German 4711 Kölnisch Wasser (where Eau de Cologne historically originated) can be used anywhere, it's so light and fresh and for men and women alike. Then there's the Parfum, the most concentrated pure perfume, which is becoming rare nowdays but can still be found, for instance Dior J'Adore. Be extremely wary with that concentration and apply very sparsingly.

I feel flattered when someone ask about my scent. It makes me think that so many people like it my choice must be so good, makes me feel proud. To share what I am using depends on my mood. Usually people don't ask me that and just compliment me about the scent. And I do the same, just compliment one's perfume if I like it. Though I don't feel perfume as a private or intimate matter, I never ask what perfume one is wearing because I am not interested in knowing or buying the same one as them..

The best compliment someone can give me is that I smell good or about my skin. I love to share what I’m wearing with strangers, however I’d rather ppl I spend a lot of time with not wear my same scent.

I like using eau de toilette in the summer, and eau de parfum in the winter time (we have a very harsh winter, so we always wear lots of layers and items dark quickly). I will have the same scent in varying strengths for the different seasons ☺️

Wow! I learned so much about perfumes today. In fact I honestly had zero idea about the difference between "eau de parfum" & "eau de toilette". Thanks for that information. Love your videos. ❤

I only share what perfume I'm wearing if its not my signature one. And when I get asked and if it happens to be my signature.. I say oh I don't remember the name ... And that's it.

I believe it's the same with makeup or any other cosmetic product.. I told someone what foundation and moisturizer I use. She bought them and it was a disaster. Then accused me for recommending her the products and ruining her face. Lesson learned. When I'm asked I tell them that the products are suitable for my type of skin and they should do their own research and pick products according to their needs. When it comes to my scent I let them know that it was picked and gifted by my husband ant it's too personal for me. I come off as rude and arrogant, yet people aren't really aware of the type questions they ask and their entitlement. Not every question demands an answer that tickles our ears. Also be aware of boundaries. For you it might not be such a big deal, but for some people it is. Respect that without rolling your eyes and throwing criticism at the person.

I saw a lady asking an older lady what fragrance was she wearing and the other lady said “sorry dear I don’t disclose that” it came across as extremely rude and pompous, not a classy move in my humble opinion. I’ve been asked what am I wearing and I feel somewhat flattered

It is not what she said but how she said might have offended you. But your reaction is subjective. She has the right not to disclose it.

@@JamilaMusayeva yes that must’ve been the reason why! As they are way to saying without sounding like she did! So you are absolutely right!
