I'll never get over the fact that Hyunjin was street-casted with no prior dance experience or training! I love the appreciation for his performance ability and the growth that he's shown even since their debut in 2018. I'm just mesmerized by his ability to tell stories through movement and his dedication to his art. This series of performers reacting to different artists is so enjoyable and gives a different depth to my appreciation for their abilities. Thank you for this reaction!

Who’s gonna tell him that this cover for When the Party is Over was Hyunjin’s first attempt at Contemporary dance? He decided that he wanted to work on his fluidity and flexibility after COVID started and with this choreography he made he wanted to tell a bit of how he was feeling from not being able to perform in front of his fans. He decides to learn things and does them amazingly within such a short period of time. The lack of experience he has in the style of dance just makes it more impressive in my opinion

He is not trained on ballet at all actually. The reality is he is streetcasted when he was a teen. He subsequently trained as an idol, which includes dancing and developed a passion in dancing. Personally I think his charm is making all his performances look beautiful, technicality aside. I have yet to see any of his performances, be it as an individual or as a group in SKZ, to be not beautiful. It does not help that he himself is a beautiful specimen of human being.

Fun fact: HyunJin never learned/studied dance. He was casted on the street. He taught himself how to dance. We call him Prince HyunJin, and in my humble opinion, nobody dances like him in current Kpop(The only thing TaeMin lacks is his height. HyunJin’s taller).

Ngl I gotta hardly disagree on your last point. Hyunjin no doubt is a really good dancer, but he's definitely not "that much" (I hope this doesn't sound bad 'cause I really don't mean it that way). He certainly does have rapidly going skill, but still a long way to go and tbh I think it's kinda disrespectful to say that hyunjin is better than taemin. Like let's be forreal the years of experience and growth taemin has in his dance, aside from his cleanness, as well as technique, is not comparable and shouldn't be anyway. Also regarding his height, he's 1.74m (which isn't even short), but have you seen this man's proportions?

your commentary is super interesting, i always love to hear the opinions of professional dancers breaking down hyunjin's pieces and giving him the praise he so deserves. hyunjin doesn't have a background in ballet but i could see him doing that style beautifully and i'm hoping it's something he'll try in the future. when the party's over was him dipping his toe into contemporary for the first time which explains the execution in some of his movements while also making it all the more impressive, that style as well fits him like an absolute glove imo. he's only been dancing for about 6 years so far, which in the grand scheme of things isn't actually very long, so i am truly as excited as i am terrfied to keep following his progress and see him grow even more as a dancer.

Hyunjin is art in motion. Every single video I watch of the kid has me in awe for a few minutes. I am an older lady and so many people can't fathom my love for K-Pop idols and the music/dancing. As I stated, art in motion. I literally watch these two videos every morning with my coffee and they put me in a happy place. The energy and vibe Hyunjin exudes jumps off the screen. I also show these two polar opposite videos to friends when I want to share such raw, beautiful talent with others. And thank you for loving this boy and his dancing, the reaction was awesome. 🥰

I identify so much with this reaction. When I saw him dancing for the first time, I also thought the technique was nothing special, but it is the artistic expression that is superb, and that is what ultimately makes you want to watch a dancer over and over again. It was honest, pointed out some technicalities that can obviously be improved, but in no way took away from the performance, just highlighted how it would have made it that much better. Thank you for your feedback! Hyunjin would appreciate it~ the billie eillish was his first choreography and he always puts a meaning or story to express in his dances coz for him dance is another language. He wasn't classically trained, he learned dancing only when he became an idol trainee which is like less than 2 years before he debuted. He decided to learn contemporary and jazz after he became an idol to improve his dancing. He is still learning and practicing more coz he wants to keep improving. If you want to watch the making of his motley crew, studio choom released a choreo record for it. If you want perfect technicality, another member of stray kids is the answer. The dance leader of the group, Lee Know was a professional dancer before becoming an idol trainee.

one thing i love about these two performances is that he never really shows his face, especially in play with fire, your only see his full face when he’s looking in the mirror. and i love that. he’s said himself that when he was a trainee he was told that he didn’t need any talent to debut because he was good looking but he wanted to get places by working for something. he never wanted to be singled out by his visuals. i LOVE how the only time in play with fire we see his full face is when he’s looking in the mirror, and that’s only his reflection. all the other times the camera is on his face his hair is covering his eyes or a shadow is hiding his face, it’s like we a forced to watch his movements, and i love how he does that. this whole performance is so.. him, it was released as a way for him to come back into the industry after some months, and as hyunjin, he wasn’t gonna do it quietly, he was gonna make an entrance, and thats exactly what he did. it’s been a few months since he’s been back and i still wonder if he had to come back so loudly but in all honesty, he most certainly did.

First vid from may 2020, he spent many times perfecting his dance, even the hand stand was hard for him. Ballet exactly what I always hoping for him to take lessons into after his when the party's over. I hope he will someday. U spot on the unable to go lower. It's one weakness that I notice too. He kinda hurt himself whenever he went too low 😁. He is better actually in his play with fire, also in motley crew. But he still can go further with the right technic. As far as I know, the LOWEST he can go is during TOP performance. U can check his TOP fancam ( white clothes), he almost be one with the floor every time he did that move 😁 I still wonder why he went super low, while other members didn't do it. But I guess it because the pressure on his legs, maybe it's more comfortable to just go lower instead. Thank you Merv for the constructive reactions 👍

He can get to the lowest, i think it depends on his pants. In the last mission for the survival show, he did a full on front split flat on the ground in school life dance break. But in motley crew, his split was not fully on the ground unlike in the survival show which was the same type of split. He was wearing tight pants in motley crew but loose pants in school life. If he's wearing loose clothes he can be more flexible in his lower body

@@lunalovegood6357 Really? Haven't seen of it yet 😢. Then why he can't go lower in dingo school while han gave him an example to do one?; Either it's the pants or his bones just got heavier as he getting taller. He didn't do that split again I guess 😢. Anyway, still hoping he gonna get Ballet lessons someday. Btw, chan said he took a modern dance & Ballet for 1 year. Hv u seen Chan do any split? 🤔

I'm a dancer and sometimes I watch videos like this and it makes me want to start my own channel and make videos with my own commentary. Trained dancers experience performances, especially kpop performances, in a different way for sure. Also, I love that Hyunjin had no prior dance training before getting street casted. He has a natural talent for performing even if he's still playing catch up on technique. The fact that he has the passion, determination, and confidence to choreograph and perform a Contemporary piece without any Contemporary training is amazing in its own right! He also has a similar style to me (emphasis on emotional story telling vs technical tricks) I want to dance with him so bad!!!

I agree with the critique, he has the emotion, you can tell this is a form of self expression for him, not just a skill he had to acquire as an idol, I believe he really found himself in music and dance after he got casted because he didn’t do any of this prior which only goes to show that some things are meant to happen. But he does still lack skill, he is not completely detail oriented yet but his journey as a dancer is still so short that it’s impressive that he is this good already and I am sure he will grow and grow, I mean the second performance which is a year or so apart from the first one already shows improvement. But there is truth in what he does and it shows which awes people and that is more valuable than any skill could ever be because it says that that person found out and is doing what they are meant to do which is very very rare. I am pretty sure he is my favorite dancer/performer or this new generation of idols, I say it with slight reservation because maybe it’s too early to decide but there are so many things that come together to make him be what he is, skill, authenticity, charisma, great body proportions for dancing, beautiful expressive face, I can’t compare him to anybody else even though there are some other great dancers in the 4th gen. But he has the potentional to become incredible like jimin and taemin and kai who I also believe have all those many things that came together to make them be what they are and is the reason why they stand out the way they do. If you love dancing I would recommand you checking out a fancam of taeyang from sf9 performing ‘tear drop’, he is to me the most underrated dancer in kpop and he is up there with kai taemin and jimin in my opinion... I know, big statement but just trusttt and look him up. Please if you do, do a reaction video, I’d love to hear what you think. I’ll link my favorite ones: 1. Some of the things you were saying he could do better with would make it more rigid in my opinion. I get it from a technical stand point, but I think because he had more emotion this way.

I‘d LOVE to see you reacting to the dancing and solo songs from Jimin (BTS) and Taemin (SHINee). They are incredible dancers and have kind of a similar style as Hyunjin does. This kind‘a sensual-slick-contempory-style. Jimin: - Filter - Lie - Serendipity (NOT the one with the snowgloab at the beginning) - Blackswan (Jimins Contempory Choreo) - the performance (with J-Hope) where he‘s blindfolded Taemin: - Advice - Move - Criminal - Want - Idea - Thirsty - Danger

HEy uhm i don't know if im correct but, his when the party's over cover shows his emotions during at the start of pandamic and we know everyone is lonely but i think there is one more person that leaves skz in 2019(okay i don't want to say it) reminds me how desperate he was and definitely broke his heart and trust or whatever u call it betray. And it's good that we all know but we don't talk about it and move on.

I understand why you would suggest those 'improvements' to his first dance. But I wonder if what he did was intentional to fit the mood of the song. Because a perfect dance does not fit this song. There are sad songs that a perfect dance does fit. But part of this particular song is about having to perform for the world and yet in reality at home behind closed doors the perfection is left behind for the truth to be shown. Here he showcased perfectly that while there is talent and a great deal of it, emotions win. Emotions are messy and not perfect. In my opinion.

I wonder what Merv would think of Juyeon and Yeonjun’s AOTM and their dancing/groups? TXT are so original in their choreos and Yeonjun is the fourth gen it-boy. Then Juyeon is a crazy good dancer, especially with his isolations and The Boyz are really talented.

his feet shouldn't be pointed on his back over shoulder...it's emotive contemporary. He is not a ballet dancer...he's a 21yo kpop idol who is trying to show how far he's come from being told he was a horrible dancer. This is not constructive.

Personally I feel that if he executed the moves better in the first one it would take a little away from the feeling of laziness/lethargy Billie's voice and singing gives the music. That bit of playing with fire with the low volume and fire noise in gray scale is my least favorite of it. Ig gave me a different feel compared with the rest but not in a good way and he not going all the way down made the pants and shoes look very constraining. I'd wish he used a pompous chair as a prop instead. But he makes it look good anyway... xD He has great stage presence.
